As a wizards fan I wonder if we could trade Porter for a top 8 draft pick. I think his play this year prices him way above his abilities. I do not think you should give max or near max money for a 14 a game role player. I wonder if a team like the knicks would take a Otto porterfor the 8th pick or even Otto for Melo.  I think max money should at least give you a 20pt scorer or someone who effect the game like draymond.  If we could trade for a top ten pick I think we could get a guy like lauri maurken who can feed of john wall and Bradley beal and thrive in pace and space or a guy like monk who could come of the bench as a scoring weapon. I also believe Oubre with an expanded role could offer as much or even more than porter.  There is a reason every year he players on the team keep complaining about him not getting minutes.  He’s a decent shooter with length on d.  If we were able to ge lauri market he would be that tall stretch 4 that can spread the floor while gortat keeps manning the post.  I also think if we can keep the 35th pick we can luck into a solid gortat back up.  I also would chose to keep the guy we got from the nets over porter as well.  Give him a year in the system and he could do damage getting open shots off wall and beal.

It would have to be a sign and trade. Not even sure that is possible.

Maybe I’m mentally behind in time or something, but I just don’t understand the talk about giving Porter or Nerlens max money…. how are teams supposed to compete for a championship throwing that kind of money at players of this caliber?

porter had a solid season, probably his best one thusfar.

not a max player though , he is too valuable for that team which lacks depth all over so who knows what he gets or who they could get in return for him.

I highly doubt they are interested in draft picks.

NBA desperately needs a salary reset. Everybody’s a FA starting this offseason. Obviously it won’t happen in a million years but teams giving Otto Porter 20M isn’t helping competition.

Your team just came within a game of the Eastern Conference Finals.

Your team is young and improving.

And so you want to trade your 3rd or 4th best player for Lauri Markkanen?

Porter falls into the lower level max, being in the league for fewer than 6 seasons.  So he is staring at $25 mil/per.  You can throw KCP in that pool as well.

My whole thought on these guys getting maxxed is 1) it works if you don’t ask them to play above what their role was with the previous team.  2) as the cap rises to $124 mil or so by 2020, these lower level max deals will not look so bad…so long as its not a guy like Allen Crabbe or Chandler Parsons or maybe Evan Turner.

I absolutely agree. Y’all have to understand market value.  Otto Porter is worth the lower level max, because he’s an elite role player. He gives you exactly what you want in a 3 and D player. He shot a very high percentage from 3 this year, never complains, defends, rebounds, and never tries to do too much. He’s reliable and also offers versatility with his length, because the Wizards sometimes use him as a small ball four man.  Otto Porter is exactly what today’s teams look for in a wing role player. If the Wizards traded him for a lottery pick, I guarantee next year people would be saying that "the Wizards need a 3 and D wing to space the floor for wall and defend big wings."

Oubre offers upside as well, but Porter already gives you exactly what you want and the Wizards would be taking a step back if they let him go.

I’m a Wizards fan too, and I’m conflicted on Otto. During the regular season, he improved by leaps and bounds this year, leading the league in 3pt percentage, playing tough defense and getting key rebounds and steals in close games. That said, he wasn’t a consistent performer for the Wizards in the playoffs. I understand that on paper, he’s played his way to max deal under the current market conditions, but I think the Wizards need to seriously consider the ROI. You already have Beal under a max deal. Locking up Porter may restrict what the Wizards can do to improve their putrid bench.

Even if they let Porter leave, they will only have about 6 million in cap space; they have about 94.3 million in committed salary, plus they would have one minimum salary hold. I doubt they can upgrade from Porter with that amount of money. Really the only way they can improve their bench is with the MLE or some trade. Now, it would be nice if they could sign and trade him for bench help (in essence, trade for depth), but that will be difficult to pull off.

I’ve discussed KCP’s possible extension before and I’d put Porter higher than him but personally I’d not pay either of them more than Oladipo got last autumn –  $84 million. Alex Len will be another guy whose extension is due.

The Hawks did good business getting Dennis Schroder for around $62 million over 4 years last year.

Otto has improved year on year and had a good play off series but like a lot of guys his age, I’m not sure what his actual upside might be.
