    …ever be a free agent destination? That’s a genuine question. Looking at their roster and their cap situation – their three key players going forward, Towns, Wiggins and LaVine are locked up for a minimum of the next 2 1/2 years for a grand total of about $13.5m per year. Sure they’ll need pay rises after that, but in the meantime, if they could (totally hypothetical here, not suggesting any trades) get rid of Rubio, Pekovic, Martin and Garnett (yes, I know he has a no-trade clause and they wouldn’t want to get rid of him – as I said, hypothetical), that would be a saving of about $40m dollars a year, and about $38.5m of cap room.

    Playing with Towns, Wiggins and LaVine, put simply, looks like FUN. Wiggins will score and play defense, but looks like he might be happy with that Pippin-style ‘second banana’ role, Towns could genuinely be the best under 23 prospect in the league right now (and I’m including Davis and Irving in that), and again, a great two way player, and LaVine will score in bunches and get you on SportsCenter.

    So, going back to the original question – is the oppurtunity to play with those three guys enough to make you want to go there, if you’re a superstar?

    It seems like there’s far less need to be in a large market now that everything happens online anyways – OKC being the ultimate example. If Minnesota could make one or two big splashes in the free agent market, this team could go from scary-up-and-coming team, to just plain SCARY.

    Just imagine, for instance, this team with an out and out number 1 option…imagine what this team would look like with Russell Westbrook at the 1, for instance. All of a sudden…wow.

    …but it’s still Minnesota. And right now, they’re still coached by Sam Mitchell.

    Could they ever make an impact in free agency? I’m really interested in your thoughts.

    Under normal circumstances Minnesota isn’t a desirable place for most players to be. I don’t expect them to make a splash in free agency, unless a player is from Minnesota or another cold weather place nearby or if they are legitimate contenders to win the championship.

     I don’t think anyone has enough vision to sign with them soon(next two years) based on talent alone.  If they develop talent into wins and stop locking into bad contacts,  they can find someone who wants to win. Firing sam mitchell would get the ball rolling. Towns is hands down the alpha on this team,  just imagine if he had a coach that demanded the offense come through him.

    The T-Wolves arguably struggled to get KG a top running mate during his first spell at the T-Wolves so it may not be seen as a location of choice for FAs. But if the young key core does develop then it could become a more interesting location in due course.

    I think that Lavine and Rubio will soon be starting as a guard duo with Wiggins playing SF. A contender might consider Kevin Martin and T-Wolves would probably take any sort of cash saving deal for him as it will free up time for Lavine.

    KG is on a new contract now, so I don’t know if the trade clause is still there or not. I don’t ever see him suiting up for another team apart from the T-Wolves. He would probably just retire if traded and end up back at the T-Wolves in a none playing role.

     A top 10 player, I just don’t think so. But they can get some other signings that are close.

    If the T-Wolves young core pans out, they would perhaps be looking more more a complimentary type player as an FA target like when GSW signed Iggy for example, so they would have no trouble attracting someone at that level.

    i read an article a few days ago on twitter that said the t wolves want wiggins to get stronger,becuz they say he has trouble defending bigger & more physical sfs in the league..but wiggins refused to hit the weight room on a consistent basis…they want to move wiggins to sf ,so they can start lavine at sg.

     Other than big money the primary reason for luring a FA will be KG as a part owner and front office job. Could be next year or the year after. I believe having KG will have a great influence on players decisions coming to MN. As far as the weather it’s cold in almost half the US half the year. It’s just as shitty as Chicago, or anywhere out east. (Strictly talking winter weather) And remember in addition to the main 3 players on the roster  their will be another top 5 pick on this roster which will only brighten the future.

    I don’t think the Wolves will or try to land a top 5 FA,  instead try and make a move for a good role player EX Korver, or Milsap caliber type of player, then with a chunk of change contract and with time will look like a good/great landing spot:

      I think they have all the future top-tier guys they would need to start making deep playoff runs. Not this year, because they’re too green, but soon. I like how of their Young Guns can really defend.

     They kind of remind me of a baby version of the Celtics:

    Rubio = Rondo

    Lavine = Allen

    Wiggins = Pierce

    Towns = Garnett

    Dieng = Perkins

    They just need the Shock Troops now. The Celtics would never have gotten over the top without Tony Allen and Leon Powe and James Posey and Eddie House and Glen Davis and P. J. Brown.

    It takes a while to find the right combination. They should keep the bottom half of their roster in a state of flux moving forward untill the right guys begin to click into place.

    Minny basically wasted KG’s prime years because they couldn’t pair anybody good with him.  Wally World was okay, but nothing close to another superstar the big ticket needed.  Of course, I always wonder what it would’ve been like if Steph had stuck around.  I don’t know if they would’ve won a ring, but Marbury and KG in their primes together would have been really fun to watch.  Once Spree and Cassell came along to pair with KG for his MVP season in 2004, they were not in their prime anymore and the Wolves fell to the Lakers in the Western Conference Finals.  Towns, Lavine and Wiggins has a chance to become one of, if not the best threesome in the NBA.  Pair a couple of vets with these guys in about 3 years and the Wolves could be scary good.  As for Minny being a destination for free agents, I just don’t see it.  Unfortunately, it all comes back to the weather.  It’s brutal there in the winter obviously and I’ve witnessed it firsthand.  Guys would just rather go to Miami, Houston or LA.
