high floorParticipantThe Jazz performed incredibly after the all star break on the defensive end. Also coincidentally, he was a newly appointed starter around or just before that time. He’s loaded with upside, and you can’t implement the "Hack-a-Rudy" strategy yet since he shoots 60+ %.

haysoos2uParticipantGreat question 2quick.. … and the thing is, I had to think of it in two forms.. one being, who I take for this upcoming season; and two, who would I take overall.. after flirting with taking Deandre for just THIS season, I still came back to Gobert.. His affinity for defense, unparalleled length and growing ability to finish, make him my choice.. … this season and beyond..

ExumInfernoParticipantThat’s what I had, Drummond or Gobert.
Drummond has more strength and power, but maybe Gobert is going to improve on free throws.
I struggle to seperate them, most stats do go with Gobert, but Drummond can lead the NBA in rebounds and be a player who is unstoppable in the paint so maybe I will choose him.

Dazzling Dunks and Basketball BloopersParticipantIf I were starting a team and looking for a young center to build around probably Drummond because I believe he has the most upside as far as being a force on both ends of the court.
It would all depend on the surrounding personnel on the team if we are talking about this season. For example, someone like jordan fits perfectly with a veteran team with a lot of scoring options like the clippers. However, if you put him in a situation like Drummond is in Detroit, where he will be asked to be more of an offensive focal point, I don’t like the fit nearly as much.

nateoak10ParticipantDrummond is so dominant on the glass and is such a good rim protector. Not all that different from Gobert but Drummond is better on the glass. Jordan to me is never gonna give you enough to justify his contract. Great rebounder, very efficient but super limited scorer but really struggles in man defense surprisingly. Weakside defense is really what he does and Drummond and Gobert will both do that with similar or better rebounding as well as better man defense.

GBeeParticipantI’ll take Gobert. He’s young and his defensive impact is already elite. Top 4 among all C’s according to statistics. He’s crazy long of course, but he’s also fundamentally sound on that end. He doesn’t hunt blocks, they just come to him. Gobert doesn’t make as many mental errors or gamble as much as some of the others on this list. Rudy will never be a go to guy offensively, but I don’t see any of those C’s being one either. At least he isnt a sub 45% shooter from the line so you can trust to leave him at the end of games and not worry about hack-a-shaq. He also has nice form on his shot so maybe there is hope that he can hit that 15 footer in the half court eventually, turning him into a dual threat in the PnR game as a roller and popper.
Jordan’s impact defensively isn’t even all that great for someone praised so much on that end. He anchors a mediocre defense and his team performs virtually the same defensively with him off the floor.
I’m not sure what to make of Whiteside because his sample is so small. I do find it interesting though how Miami was better defensively with him off the floor.
Drummond’s not even good on either end of the floor. He’s just a tremendous rebounder. Otherwise his instincts are poor on both ends.
Noel’s not even a center and I don’t see him being one going forward. He’s too skinny and his frame is bad. He’d get beat up long term as a center.

T RexI’d go with Jordan. He’s the only one with a proven feel offensively. Whiteside shows some things offensively, but Jordan was reliably reliable, and has much much better feel offensively than Drummond.
And while Jordan may not have Gobert’s great reach, he is a lot stronger and doesn’t get pushed around like a rag doll like Gobert does inbetween highlight blocks.

OaktownWarriorsParticipantDrummond with Gobert in a close second.
Whiteside and Noel still need to improve their scoring
And Jordan is a joke, other than rebounding and blocking shot, homeboy couldn’t score on a junior high team, NO MOVES!

Makes sense.

The Scare Crow RisesParticipantAlthough I would classify him as a Pf with an emerging offensive game
Out of all the players listed he’s the only one who could realistically become an All Time Defender/Player
he truly is a under rated player right now…

trelos6ParticipantGobert. He is ranked 17th of all centres in FT% at .623. So he can stay on the court in the 4th quarter.
Noel is a close second at .609
Whiteside .500
Jordan .397
Drummond .389

omphalosParticipantAs much as I love Drummond, Gobert has more impact on the game right now, even if Drummond will be better long-term IMO.
It still baffles me that the Celtics, in desperate need of a shot-blocker didn’t take him with one of their million first round picks, even if nobody knew he’d be this good – you can’t teach height.

T RexAs of right now, Kelly Olynyk makes a bigger impact than Gobert does.
A bigger impact than Giannis as well. And KO hasn’t even started asserting himself yet.
KO’s upside is still completely misunderstood by most fans, but there’s a reason his fellow rookies voted him to have the best NBA career among that draft class.
Stretch point center with Paul Pierce skill set and bbiq, but with better passing ability and less turnovers.
Now that KO has transformed his body, he’s much stronger and sturdier than Gobert and Giannis in the paint defensively.
Offensively, just who do you guys think is going to be able to defend KO once he gets fully comfortable and aggressive creating his own offense off the dribble?
KO has the complete offensive tool set. A great 3 point shot off the catch or off the dribble, a good first step, elite ball handling ability for a center, the ability to pull up from any distance, the ability to take, and make, as many Dirk-style one legged fadeaways as KO wants, and the ability to back his man down, and score over either shoulder with either hand.
Add to that his way above average FT shooting for a big man, and his proven clutch shooting ability, and we’re dealing with a potential superstar who is already making a star-like impact on the court.
His +/- last year was the best in his draft class by far, and his two year cumulative +/- is also best in his draft class by far. And he hasn’t even started being assertive yet.
Additionally, KO finally has quality defenders to pair with him, in Amir Johnson and Jordan Mickey. Just as Dwight makes Harden a non-disaster on defense, Amir and Mickey are huge defensive upgrades over Bass and Sullinger, two of the worst defensive PFs in the NBA.
Andre Drummond hasn’t sniffed KO’s oncourt impact yet, and all most of these guys listed above can do is put up defensive and rebounding stats, without a fraction of the feel for the game that KO has. Basically 4 on 5 offensively, most of these guys muck up an offense and make it mediocre at best.
Offense is ultimately more valuable than defense, even at center, and the Celtics offense with KO on the court has been exceptional, pretty much since KO got drafted.
All the stat heads should wrap their heads around the fact that a stretch center is a defense killer, and makes guys like Drummond worse than worthless, like a shark on the beach.

ZouldiersParticipantAs a Heat fan, yeah I’ll take Whiteside. I’m not too worried about his mentalilty since he’s surrounded with guys like Wade, Spo and Pat Riley. He also happens to have a cheap salary this season. Plus, Bob Cousy said he is like Bill Russell so I’ll take that comment.

This discussion could be very different come the year end- especially if we see an improvement in Drummond’s back to the basket game as SVG seems committed to dumping the ball down and letting the big fella work.

GBeeParticipantThey drafted JV the year before. Ross is looking like a miss, so in that aspect it was bad, but the Raps already drafted their C of the future. IDK why JV isn’t included in this topic. I think if he was afforded the same freedom as Drummond to play through mistakes and mental errors, he’d be in the discussion as one of the better young C’s in the game. Imagine if the Raps force fed him the ball for better or worse like the Pistons do with Drummond. If you look at their H2H matchups, JV has been the better player. Neither is all that great defensively (statistically, JV actually has the slight edge), but offensively JV is clearly better. More moves, better touch, more toughness and better feel in the post, can actually step away and occasionally hit the mid-range… AND he damn near shoots 80% from the line as opposed to Drummond’s putrid 39%. IDK who else they could’ve picked given how crappy that draft turned out to be, but I wouldn’t lament the lost chance of drafting Drummond bc I think JV is and will be the better player at the same position.

CobraParticipantI would go with Gobert this season, Noel for the future. Jordan and Drummond’s free throw shooting is much too low for my liking and Whiteside has a lot of baggage. Gobert offers great defense, great rebounding, low usage but highly efficient scoring (he could make free throws), and he’s a better passer than Jordan, Drummond, and Whiteside.

Captain LParticipantGobert, the biggest reason is because of his attitude, he loves the game and is driven to win and be the best, his offense isn’t the best but it will improve, he is a real worker and that will translate to major improvement.
