Hype MachineNaah thats not true. His defensive impact started slowly in the season but got better. Towards the league leaders in most advanced defensive stats.
I read a study about "Points saved/possession over positional value, per game". Its by Daniel Lilling "Picking the NBAs best Rim Protector"
Stats junkies will definitely like it.

220ParticipantEarlier in the year at least the team’s defensive efficiency was lower with Whiteside on the court than a few lineups when he was off it.

TheGuyParticipantIt’s his immaturity, the strategy of putting him against backups and he’s a the big man version of a gunner of the bench, he’s just simply does not pass the ball. Also, he plays starter’s minutes, and is on the court to close out games, so it’s a way of Spo, Riley and the Heat sorta just keeping the guy in check because with his ego he can let all this success get to his head.
I listen to the Dan Le Batard show a lot, and Whiteside is a often a topic of conversation (in their local hour, they are Miami based). He’s going to get the max contract, the question is will Miami be willing to pay him that – on the Le Batard show, Dan has mentioned that Miami is trying to get him to leave money on the table so the Heat can be in play for Durant this summer. Miami is in a tough situation because they way he’s played; he has earned max money for sure, but with his background and attitude he could very likely be a guy who mails it in when he get’s his. There’s a reason a guy of his talent was out of the league, I would say buyer beware.

BiggysmallsParticipantA guy that you have to keep on the bench to keep his attitude in check. Sign me up for a max contract!
Isn’t it odd, this is a guy that was out of the league for a while, needed to take the scenic route to NBA stardom and is still kind of a big tool? It doesn’t seem like he’s one of those "try-hard" or "effort based" douches either. He’s just a plain a hole.
that’s an outsiders perspective at least. I don’t follow Miami that closely but thats the vibe I get from him. Hard not to give him a big contract but man it seems like he could just as easily flame out once he gets paid.

D7H7NParticipantHe got moved back to the starting lineup probably because they need to get him ready for playoffs. You gotta start with your best players.

D7H7NParticipantOkay it’s both.
Kerr moved Iggy to the starting lineup over Bogut when the Warriors were down 1-2 against the Cavs and look what happened.

morestealsthanscoresParticipantI always assumed that it was to keep him out of foul trouble – you don’t want a shot blocker thinking about not fouling. If he gets to the second quarter without a foul, he’s probably good for the game.

markfitz14ParticipantAmare gives the veteran presence to start the game. Lets Whiteside and Coach see how the game is going. Whiteside can dominate second units as well.
