Ever year late in the second round teams draft nobodys who play for low level teams in Russia Serbia(Izzet Turkyilmaz Chukwudiebere Maduabam Tanguy Ngombo Ater Majok Chinemelu Elonu Emir Preldzic Henk Norel
Why can’t they draft a college senior stash him in Spain and bring him in a year or two years later such as Kyle Singler

That is what the dleague is for but then any team can sign your draft pick
The Spurs let Marcus Denmon go to France to develop

If you actually draft the player, I “believe” you own his rights period, protecting another team from picking him up from the NBDL.

Kyle Singler’s situation was an anomaly. He got drafted right before the lockout and decided to go overseas like a bunch of other people. Instead of leaving his new team in the middle of the season when the lockout was lifted, he decided to stick it out until Alicante’s season was finished.

But yes, you do raise a good idea, but isn’t that what the NBA D-League is for?

Most 2nd round picks start out overseas and the team that drafted them retains their rights.

because those international prospects usally have contract with their clubs

NCAA players don’t have contracts, they need to sign one

So you can’t draft somebody just like that and asume he will get contract somwhere. Usually It’s expected when you draft someone from NCAA you will sign him.

Good to see more and more young americans drafted go to europe after draft, not wasting time on NBA bech or D league. Patrick Beverly is great sample of smart choice.

Singler did it mostly because of the lockout. As for international guys, sometimes its about wanting to save a little money for salary cap reasons at that time or they just dont have the room or the need for a player so they’ll draft him and let him continue overseas until they feel they need him.

    This.

Not to mention, it’s a lot easier for someone drafted from France to want to stay in France if he knows he’s not going to get playing time rather than someone who was born and raised in California to go play in Turkey for 2-3 years.

the timberwolves told Robbie hummel he should go overseas and work on his game so they didnt have to renounce his rights, if he didnt voluntarily do it they would have cut him and lost his rights but he agreed with them and he went overseas. So it is rare and it takes trust on both sides to do that and there is nothing holding either side accountable if they break the agreement.
