valentineThe Cavs are a big deal. They’ll make the NBA finals again. There isn’t a single contender in the East, and they’ll be on Sportscenter daily.
Kyrie Irving’s injury sounds pretty bad. Out til January, and even then how many minutes can a guy recovering from the sort of injury play? (legit question).
Nonetheless, the Cavs have 2 options at PG, and both of them are somewhat proven in the Lebron James system.
Who do you think SHOULD be starting, and who do you think WILL start?

Robb_CParticipantMo Williams should start and Delladova should come off the bench, any other way and your taking away what makes Delly so effective.. He’s your scrappy change of pace PG who can be a sparkplug for the second unit.. His best quality in my opinion is his enthusiasm and passion for the game, he will keep the second unit accountable by them matching his work ethic.. Mo Williams is perfect plugin starting pg due to the fact he’s a vet and has playing experience with Lebron.. And to be honest the starting five could use a leader outside of Lebron

Rip255Interesting take. But fair enough, both have pro’s and cons.
I’m not sure about how well Williams can guard opposition PG’s though. I also think Delly is a good Leader as he sets the standard for intensity. Delly can’t play more than 20mpg at that pace though, because he burns out.

Dazzling Dunks and Basketball BloopersParticipantWilliams should and most likely will start. He is the better outside shooter and playmaker. Having delladova on the floor heavy mins puts to much of a strain on lebron to be the primary ball-handler and carry a heavier load offensively. Delladovas hustle and defense are valuable and he will be part of the rotation, at least until kyrie is back, but Williams should start. If they were comfortable with starting the season with delly as their starter, I don’t think they would have picked up Williams.

Rip255I find it strange that there’s no Delly love on this forum.
Despite ranking #14 in the league in Jersey Sales, which is the ultimate popularity contest.
I think he actually posts better 3pt shooting numbers than Mo.

he_gets_bucketsParticipantDelly shot a better percentage than Mo last season(Delly’s 40% to Mo’s 34%) but you have to consider the factors at play when they were both shooting. Mo was the primary ball handler and the singular shot creator for the T-Wolves in his time there as Rubio was out a good portion of the time. This meant most of Mo’s shots came off the dribble or towards the end of the shot clock, meaning they were not as high percentage shots as wide open spots ups from the wings or the corners. This was similarly an issue in Charlotte where he would spend most of his time in a second unit, in which there was no Kemba or Lance on the floor besides him to take up some of the creating slack, and as such his shooting was again, less than stellar. This is in stark contrast to Delly who was playing alongside one of the best passers in the league, whilst also having multiple offensive threats around him to take attention away from him, allowing him to feast on all the wide open corner and wing spot up 3s he wanted.
Field goal percentage is more so a representation of the ecosystem a shooter resides in, rather than their individual merit as a shooter. This is how a guy like Vince Carter can go from shooting 40% and 39% from 3 in consecutive years with Dallas, then the next year fall off a cliff to 29% with the Grizzlies.
Remember that in 2009 and 2010 while with Lebron and the Cavs, Mo shot 42% and 43% respectively from 3, better than the mark Delly set this year with the Cavs. Mo is just as good of a shooter as Delly.

ExumInfernoParticipantI would start Mo. After 5 or 6 minutes, put in Delly to harrass the other team’s starting point guard. Then later, last few minutes of the quarter or start of the second quarter, Mo comes back for more offense when LeBron has a brief rest on the bench.
Williams and Shumpert starting, offense and defense. Off the bench, Delly and JR, defense and offense, maybe good for team balance.
Another interesting question, the minutes allocated for center and power forward for the Cavs if everyone is healthy.

CynthiaParticipantIs that a joke? Mo Williams will still be better than Delly when he’s 50. Personally I’m tired of the Delly hype, he had one decent game in the finals after Kyrie went down and now casual basketball fans act like he’s a God. In reality he’s a good third point guard on any team and that’s about it. His defense is nice, I’ll give him that. But his shot selection and overall passing IQ is a bit suspect. Not to say he won’t continue to improve since he is still quite young, but as of right now Mo Williams is the better player hands down.
That being said, I think Delly could shine a lot better as a shooting guard. I just don’t think he has the IQ or skillset required for being a point guard. But as a shooting guard I think if he kept improving he could become a decent 3 & D type player.

dcaseParticipantI’m glad someone brought up his passing IQ. Throughout the playoffs I found myself commenting that Delly is the worst when it comes to throwing alley-oops. There were numerous times he would drive into the lane and just lob the ball up hoping Lebron or someone would bail him out by catching his errant passes. Most of the time he wouldn’t even look where his passes were going.

Rip255You guys are ruthless.
To be fair most people only watched him against the hawks and warriors…which were 2 VERY good teams. Both those teams made better players than Delly look mediocre last season.
And he made some bad plays but he was also very good in both series. He faded towards the end…but he outplayed Jeff Teague and restricted Steph Curry about as well as anyone could.
He also made some huge plays in the clutch.
Hes gone from under rated, to over rated, back to under rated.
And Mo Will isnt really that good is he?
I think Delly will silence some critics in this forum by earning that starting spot.

he_gets_bucketsParticipantHawks v Cavs Series Averages
Jeff Teague – 35 minutes, 21.5 points, 4.5 assists, 3.3 rebounds, 1.3 steals, 1.0 blocks, 1.8 turnovers on 43/28/100 shooting
Matthew Dellavedova – 30 minutes, 9.5 points, 2.5 assists, 3.3 rebounds, 0.5 steals, 0 blocks, 2 turnovers on 30/31/77 shooting
Yeah he sure did blow Jeff Teague out of the water that series

Andrew1984ParticipantMo Williams put 52 on the Pacers one night last year. It would take Delly three weeks to score 52.

properbreaksParticipantDelly deserves to be on the roster for sure, but let’s not get ridiculous. Let’s be realistic, Mo Williams is a way better option, not that they can’t still win with Delly at the one, but if you do that, Lebron is pretty much your pg.. Even with his defense, in the Hawks series, Teague and Shroeder could get pass Delly almost anytime that they wanted, they just didn’t have the confidence to go for 30 points against him. He’s just too slow to consistently stop someone with his defense. His defense is more of relentless effort that gets on the nerves of players who aren’t thinking and playing with mental strength.
Offensively he had his moments, but it’s no way that I’m going to compare him to Mo Williams on offense.

IndianaBasketballParticipantMo Williams is a good offensive player. I watched him put up 50 something vs the Pacers last season. There’s no doubt he starts. Plus, LeBron’s game actually prefers a point guard like Mo. Mo can make plays, but also doesn’t mind standing on the three-point line while LeBron isolates.
I honestly don’t think the Cavs will miss a beat without Kyrie in the regular season. We’ve seen what LeBron does with the right role players. He can’t win a title with them, but he can sure win 50 regular season games. They’re going to spread the floor, let LeBron isolate and then he’s going to drive, score, get fouled or kick it out to a shooter. The last time Mo was with LeBron, he shot 42-43% from three.
