Who Defends Lebron the Best?

I've really been giving it some thought, and I really don't know. Whichever player defends Lebron the best though should be one of the most highly sought after players in the league. If you're going to win a championship, you're going to have to go through Lebron, both for the East or West. Having the number one defender against Lebron will give you a much better chance to knock off the Heat. So, who do you guys think defends him the best?

Personally, I want a PF with some bulk who is athletic, able to move laterally, and also able to defend the post.

I think if Serge Ibaka had

I think if Serge Ibaka had the quickness, he would be able to guard LeBron. However, he doesn't, so yeah. I think someone like Serge with the athleticism, length and strength would be able to guard LeBron best. You have to be able to stay in front of him, though

I actually had the same

I actually had the same thought with Ibaka.... He's close to the prototype I'm thinking of, but like you said his quickness/lateral movement isn't there.

Too bad Ibaka isn't a good

Too bad Ibaka isn't a good man defender.

Man defense vs superstars is overrated. It's about how the opposing team defends the player.

The mavs played a lot of zone

The mavs played a lot of zone and their team defense was superb. It wasnt Deshawn. It was the rotation with marion Kidd and Stevenson coupled with Chandler down low.

Obviously Paul George gives

Obviously Paul George gives up weight and strength to LeBron right now, but looking into the future I think PG will be the best defensive matchup against Lebron. If he can get stronger over the next few years I could see him giving LeBron some trouble with his combination of length and lateral quickness. That being said, nobody defends LeBron well.

It really comes down to team

It really comes down to team defense when defending superstars that can score in multiple ways. If I had to choose one guy Id say Paul Millsap is the guy I like matched up on him, not for the entire game but in close game situations. He can body up on him, he has quick hands and feet and his perimeter defense is really underrated, plus he hustles nonstop.

You nailed it here for me.

You nailed it here for me. Right now no one really defend him. He simply blows by regardless which position or Type of player defends him. But Deng makes him work for his points and that's what you could ask a defender right now!

This question reminds me of how Dirk played in his championship run and he was unstoppable that year. There is a link somewhere on Youtube showing how good he did on Dirk that year in slow motion and it was beatifully, I can't find it anymore and maybe someone can find the link for me again?

Denk is a really underrated defender and incredible durable, not the Russel Westbrook kind of invincible (until now) but he is flat out a warrior! He plays banged up so often and is having heavy minutes to keep the Bulls in the race.

Paul George and Jimmy Butler should both do well in the future as well and they will play a lot in the East the next years, if George is improving this well, he will be elite sooner than later!

The wingman spots are getting a lot of promising talents to teams.

Kawhi Leonard is getting bigger and even more explosive too and will be good defensive matchup against Bron.

Sorry I spoke about Nick

Sorry I spoke about Nick Collison, completely forgot to name him here... Damn w33!]

Ibaka is horrible guarding LeBron. Ibaka is really weak 1on1. This really has to be adressed when he wants to become a Mutombo kind of player he would be. Add 1,5 bpg in 1on1 matchups to his statline and he could become one of the best shotblockers in the league AND would be nightmare matchup but right now Deng and in the future George, Leonard, Batum, Harkless(!), Tobias Harris, maybe Anthony Davis(?), Blake Griffin (if he somehow discovers somedays that more than average defense is a must have to be a completele Star in this league). That all will be and could be a increasing top level wing players in the near future. Imo the league shifts into a generation changes the upcoming year. Young teams like the Rockets, Thunder, Pistons(!), or even Orlando are making huge steps forward with very young teams and the New faces of the league. Durant changes himself into a very mean and angry version of himself which kind of makes him more mature ((maybe even just in his opinion)).

This future of this league looks very bright to me!!!

Nobody

The only SINGLE person that can stop LeBron is LeBron. Watching him play is a thing of beauty even when he's not scoring he just doesn't SEEM to make any mistakes anymore.

Right

Like people have said, you can't stop him and it takes a team effort. Agree with @AJY52 and @halfdecayed about George and Deng. Never seen Faired matched up against him. Several guys don't have the size but give him a battle in Jimmy Butler, Tony Allen, and Iman Shumpert. How does Batum fair against him? Chris Singleton?

Over the last few years or

Over the last few years or so, Tayshuan Prince has done an excellent job of guarding Lebron. I remember one time in the regular season a while ago (when the Pistons were actually good), Prince absolutely shut down Lebron. His length, athleticism and quickness bother Lebron because its not very often when he has someone who can contest every shot he takes, and recover from getting beat off the dribble. Too bad he isn't in his prime anymore...... Having a power forward guard him is a huge mistake IMO. IT creates too many mismatch problems. It means that there will also be a mismatch for whomever is guarding Wade or Bosh more than likely. Lebron can out-muscle just about anyone he plays against anyways while getting them in to foul trouble.

but he has changed his name

I think ron artest (2003-2004 version) would really give james trouble. He can match james' power, size and speed.

I would have to say Deng does

I would have to say Deng does the best individual job on him but even he got kinda worked this year.

The truth is no individual can stop Lebron. The best way to stop him is to A. not turn the ball over to keep him out of transition and B. force him into jumpshots or just keep him off the free throw line. Even though he doesnt hit FTs at a great rate, when he is getting there and drawing a ton of fouls means the rest of the team is in the bonus and its almost impossible to even slow him down if you are in foul trouble.

The notion that a PF should guard Lebron is kinda silly. The guy is more of a PG then a PF. He is initiating pick n rolls, so if you have an athletic PF a switch wouldnt be horrible, but if he is isolating, no PF can guard him. Ibaka guarding Lebron would be a waste because 95% of his defensive value comes from weakside shot blocking. That is completely neutralized when playing the Heat because he can't roam off any of their other guys.

If I had to gameplan against the Heat, I would always double Lebron off pick n rolls, force Bosh to into a deep 2 shooting mode because he seems to get less aggressive when thats all he does, and run Battier, Miller and Chalmers off the 3 point line. Beyond that, I truly believe the best way to stop them is to keep them out of transition which can be done by limiting open floor turnovers, and beating them to a pulp on the offensive glass.

Great post. Best defense vs

Great post. Best defense vs him is to blitz the PnR. Try to prevent him from getting a head of steam towards the paint.

Neither back line defender can be a liability too. If he gets by his man, at least his defender could steer him into a good help defender. Chicago's problem is that Boozer is often in the game and he's one of the worst back line defenders in the history of humanity.

Turn him into a scorer, not a passer in the post. I wouldn't double him there.

Mix up the looks, maybe even throwing in some zone in hopes of turning him into more of a station to station player. I wish more teams would have more faith in zone. Its a viable tactic in small doses, but it often gets shredded in the NBA because its not practiced it enough.

Yeah, it appears Boozer is

Yeah, it appears Boozer is frozen by Sub Zero every time he has to defend a PnR. I don't get it, it's literally like he's stuck to the ground. As a Bulls fan I'd love to see Boozer gone.

I agree with mixing up looks. That's exactly what Dallas did two years ago, and it worked to perfection. I think Lebron scored a total of 21 points combined in the 4th quarters. Not sure why teams don't resort back to that tape to develop similar defensive strategies Dallas used against the Heat.

In the past I would say

In the past I would say Tayshaun Prince, right now I would have to go with Luol Deng and in the near future Paul George.

When you take LeBron and put

When you take LeBron and put him in that spread offense, there's no stopping him. The floor is just too wide open. Either LeBron gets a layup/dunk/fouled or somebody is shooting a wide open jump shot.

Tony Allen is the best

Tony Allen is the best defender i've seen on Lebron. Just watch old Celtics vs Cavs playoffs to see why. Can't stop him completely but TA did the best anyone could to contain him pretty good
