Whatever Happen To Mike Jones?

When he was coming out of highschool, I thought he was a talented shooter and great athlete who had tons of offensive ability and potential. But for some reason he never really developed into the great player that he had the potential to be. He was actually one of the first guards to be highly compared to ray allen early in his college career. Believe it or not, I actually think he could have been drafted straight out of highschool based purely on the talent and potential he showed in highschool

Maybe we throw that Ray Allen comparison out there

to much. I remember seeing him in prep games and early on at Maryland. I thought this was Ray re-incarnated. Even the shot mechanics. I thought initially that he wasn't getting the playing time I thought he should have but maybe he wasn't that good. I swore he was a surefire prospect, if I was a poster back then I would have said something ridiculous like he had the ceiling of Ray Allen with the floor of JR Smith. He eventually only became a shooter and wouldn't or couldn't drive to save his life. I'm about to goggle him and see what comes up because he has to be playing somewhere.

At first I thought Gary

At first I thought Gary Williams was just jerking him around his first couple of years, but Jones didn't do anything to deserve a larger role. He was a spot up shooter who could dunk in the open court every once in a while, but that's about it. Maybe he didn't have the work ethic, or maybe he just wasn't too bright, but his game didn't progress at all.
I still thought he should've at least been drafted late 2nd. He had the physical tools and he had a translatable skill (spot up shooting), but I guess he didn't have the mental makeup or something. He seemed content just being a spot up shooter.

He was from my area Dorchester in Boston

My uncle was friends with his dad and use to tell me he was going to the L all the time. He never developed his handle and could not defend at a NBA level. He had a good J and had decent hops. Man in High school he was a athletic freak. In college he was good athletically. Not off the charts like it seemed in HS. NBA is trully elite because he could ball man. He was average athletically by NBA standards. Not a high bb IQ either.

He lives in So Cal now. We

He lives in So Cal now. We hoop at the same gym over the summers. There's quite a few D-1 players and a couple overseas pros and he's always the most dominant player on the court dunking on people and raining 3s like it's nothing. Last I saw him was in June and he was supposed to be going back over to Turkey.

He definitely has league

He definitely has league talent but the reason he turned into strictly a shooter is his breakdown ability off the dribble is shaky to this day he turns it over quite a bit going to the rim...when he gets there it's a poster, but he can't consistently beat his guy off the dribble, his deep ball is still automatic though. And he doesn't have the braids anymore, that eurobasket pic is from his Maryland days
