What Route Is Best For The Nets To Take?

Should the Nets trade all their expiring assets for Joe Johnson, with his huge contract, or should they go the cheaper route, and sign free agent guard O.J. Mayo, who's dying to end up on a big market team?

The Nets are desperate to keep Deron Williams so they should ask him who he'd like to play with and try like heck to make it happen.

Cheaper route without a

Cheaper route without a doubt, even if that means Deron Williams leaves. I wouldn't be willing to take on Joe Johnson's superstar contract for his all star level performance. Usually guys have to be 7 feet tall to get that overpaid, Rashard Lewis being the biggest example...even though he wasn't a center still near 7 feet tall.

If you acquire Joe Johnson and his massive contract then re-sign Deron Williams for the max, your team is basically set. Then you have to be like the Heat and convince guys to take less money for a championship, but only problem is with only those two you aren't very close to winning a championship.

If were the Nets GM...

I would be trading Gerald Wallace and Anthony Morrow to Atlanta for Josh Smith ASAP and staying clear of J.J's contract...

2nd, I would sign OJ Mayo to a mid level deal and pair him with Deron Williams in the backcourt, a veteran guard like Jason Kidd or Jason Terry would come to play with Deron and Avery Johnson for the Min.

3rd thing I would do is Is sign and trade Brook Lopez, I'd package him along with Marshon Brooks, Damion James and some draft picks for Dwight Howard (which is what the Magic will have to settle for unless they say Eff You Dwight you're going to Houston)

4th, In free Agency I'd target OJ Mayo to play Sg, sign Jason Kidd or Jason Terry to backup Williams/Mayo, sign Kenyon Martin and Andre Kirilenko to Veteran's Min. Deals or MLE's...

The Nets would have a big 3 of Deron Williams, Dwight Howard and Josh Smith with OJ Mayo and some veterans filling out the roster, if they got Kidd or Terry plus a solid backup bigman like Kenyon Martin they would be a Contender in the East...They'll get a Euro like AK 47 to play Sf/Pf too...

D.Williams-Mayo-AK 47-J.Smith-D.Howard-Kidd or Terry-K.Martin...that's a Championship Contender IMO...

The Magic would have a few young players to begin building around

(B.Lopez, R.Anderson, A.Nicholson, M.Brooks, D.James and D.Orton)

Sure they would need a Pg and Starting Sg/Sf but next year's draft should have a few talented Sg/Sf's IMO and they can use some of their Cap Space next year to sign a young Pg like Darren Collison...

One problem with that scenario; Deron, Dwight and JSmoove would count about $51.7 million against the cap (19.25 for D12 and Deron and 13.2 for Smith). That would make it pretty hard to flesh out the rest of their roster, let alone go after Mayo and Kirilenko who should get pretty decent deals.

In general though I agree with you, they should hold onto their trade assests for Dwight instead of getting Johnson. Joe Johnson isn't truly a difference maker and investing 20 mill a year in him would allow the franchise to be a playoff team but never a contender.

By narrowing his choice to just Brooklyn, Dwight is forcing our hand. We really have no choice but to trade him and end this drama. A sign and trade with Lopez and a package of Marshon Brooks, future 1st rounders and players like Johan Petro or Jordan Farmar in order to make the salaries work should probably be enough at this point to get a deal done.

OJ Mayo wouldn't cost too much IMO

he's a guy that would sign for the NY Market and Media attention, he really needs that more than the Salary at this point...He's still young enough to get another deal with Brooklyn....He can boast his profile with the Nets...

AK 47 has made a ton of money in the NBA and in Europe, he's a guy that values winning more than money at this point, he also values comfort, that's why he went overseas this year and that's why I think he'd sign with The Nets and Russian Billionaire Mikeal Prokovich(who would take care off AK 47 for life if you know what I mean!!!)

Keynon Martin and Jason Kid have ties to the Nets and the New Jersey/New York area, Kidd still has a home on the east coast and has played for Avery Johnson...I think they'd come back for a chance to win a Ring with Williams and Howard...

I also think we will see AK47

I also think we will see AK47 and some other Russian players come over and play for the Nets. First there is a large Russian community in Brooklyn, and it will help with the fan base. Second, Prokovich will have no problem with nudge nudge wink wink deals with Russian players to circumvent the salary cap. Prokovich is seriously rich and seriously powerful in Russia. A guy like AK47 could sign for the veteran minimum, get a wink from Prokovich and know that once AK47's playing days are over, Prokovich will take care of him beyond the prying eyes of Stern. What happens in Russian very much stays in Russia and those who know certainly won't tell. It's an obvious way to circumvent the cap and one that I don't think Stern can do anything about.

If the Nets can't D Howard

If the Nets can't D Howard and Deron Williams, they should make max back loaded offers to J. Lin, L. Fields and a good offer to Novack. Worst case is the Knicks match. Best case is you have half the team that was basically unbeatable during the Linasinity run and it will only cost you about $12 million this year (much more in those backloaded years, but those years are in the players prime and if they continue to play like they are they will be worth it). Add those guys to Crash and resign Humphries and you have a playoff bound team and you are still under the cap and able to make a max offer to D. Howard if he doesn't do a sign and trade. And the Knicks might decide to get Nash instead of J. Lin (and Nash might take the Mid Level Exception for a chance to play in NY which is where he spends his summers, and of course for a chance to play again with Amare and on a clear cut playoff bound team) and they will certainly let Fields go instead of having his salary push them over the luxury cap. The Knicks might now want to pay a lot for Novak because they know they have to play Amare 35+ minutes a game at PF.
