What player "before your time" would you most like to have seen play?
For me it would be Bill Russell.
his rival Wilt( wouldnt u want to see a 100 point game or a player average 50)
Pistol Pete i would love to watch also
Its gotta be Wilt, The man averaged 50...
Russell or Robertson
Great topic. So many, I have always been fascinated by Wilt Chamberlain. Bill Russell was a great choice too, as for me was your namesake who is a fascinating basketball player as well. I think Wilt was so far ahead of his time, yet at the same time I would like to see if he could have backed up his claims of being able to average 70 in the games current form. He is one of my all-time favorites, I have an affinity for dominant 7 footers.
the Robertson choice, and add Baylor for me
watching in 1991, so I just missed out on guys like Magic and Bird. I would have loved to see them play.
Not trying to hate on Wilt, but his 100 point game was a joke. He took 63 fg's, 32 ft's and his teammates intentionally fouled the whole 4th so the opposing team could not use up the shot clock even though wilts team was way ahead.
Here are some other crazy stats about his 50 ppg season, he averaged 49 minutes per game and 40 shots per game. That's just crazy. Nowadays, there are only a couple games the entire season where a guy shoots 40 times.
Haha, I have never heard that part of the story before. I always heard he was a horrendous free throw shooter and would shoot from all spots in the free-throw shooting, semi-circle, restricted area.
The NBA should put an asterisk next to that record. Kobe is now the official record holder for most points scored in a game. [sarcasm]
I have to say Oscar and Bill too. I would have liked to see Cousy and Pistol too.
Pete Maravich for sure.
pistol pete maravich
i was born in 96 so i wuld wanna c mj play hahha
Julius Erving(Dr.J) tops my list. Other guys i would have liked to see are Pistol Pete Maravich, Jerry West, and Wes Unseld.
I would have loved to see the Dr. in his prime tear up the ABA
I was born in 1995 so I'm going MJ.....It's nice to see young people on this forum...! lmao
The starting center from the opposing team gave that story a while back since there is no footage of the game. He said he got in foul trouble and he was like the only guy over 6-6 to gaurd Wilt, so they just kept feeding wilt the ball. When the fourth quarter started, Wilt's team decided to go for a hundred so they intentionally fouled as soon as the other guys inbounded for the entire 4th so they could get it back and give it to wilt before time ran off the clock. 63 fg's and 32 ft's in the same game is ridiculous. That means he was shooting the basketball once about every 30 seconds for the entire game. I think what Kobe did was more impressive.
Player gotta be Wilt. If I go by team I would want to see the 1992 Dream Team play.
Pistol Pete because I heard dude was a wizard with the ball
Magic Johnson personally
I think it's really cool how many guys said Maravich. I am old enough to have seen him play many of times. He was all that! Gentlemen, let me tell you about a guy who could make your mouth drop. OMG! I did see Chamberlain play, so I didn't pick him. I saw him as he was at the tail end of a brilliant career, and would have liked to seee him in his prime. He must really have been a man among boys at that time. When I saw him, he was playing against Alcindor (Jabbar), Lanier and Thurmond among others, so he had some real competition and he was a little long in the tooth.
I really am surprised to hear so many say Pistol Pete. Very pleasantly surprised. You would not have been disappointed!
How old are you?
In order from favourite
2. Magic Johnson
5. Pistol Pete
6. Nate Archibald
7. Bill Russell
8. Dominique Wilkens
I would love to be able to watch George Gervin... My dad said his game was beyond smooth and fun to watch
Yeah I would have to add dr.j to the list along with bird magic and MJ
Great topic. There are so many...but Wilt for sure. Someone with those unbelievable stats and physical gifts would have been great to see today.
Maravich is the clear choice for me. I remember seeing some cheezy, after-school special type movie about him when I was a kid. The movie was ehh, but I became fascinated with him & would absolutely loved to have seen him play. The highlights I have seen are just amazing. I had to laugh when people compared Rubio to him. Not in the same ballpark - not even close.
I feel lucky I got to see Dr. J (only at the end unfortunately), Kareem, Walton, Moses Malone, Bird, Magic, Barkley, Dominique, Hakeen, MJ & all the rest. The late 80's / early 90's were a pretty special time in the NBA.
I actually got to meet Wilt & get his autograph. Dude was HUGE! Of course I was only 12 or 13 at the time.
Great topic - fun reading a lot of the responses.
Maravich was the man , would have loved to see him play in person. My dad used to watch him all the time when he would visit his parents in Boston or his brother in Atlanta. It' not that big a deal anymore when someone like Lebron or Kobe is coming to town, there is internet now to watch all the highlights you want. Maravich excited people when he came to town because that might be the only time you ever got to see him play, because the hawks and the jazz were never on tv(the celtics sometimes were though).
In answer to an earlier question, I'm 47. I was reading the other thread and was amazed at how young everyone else is on this site. I was embarrassed to be honest. I am happy to see such knowledge and enthusiasm by some of you younger guys!
Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Dr. J, and Hakeem Olajuwon are the players that I want to see play.
i was born '91 and when i first watched nba basketball, it was the '98 finals with jordan, pip, malone and stockton. the only thing i remember is mj's magical shot. haha. i would've wanted to see these guys playing.
pistol pete - the flair, the hair and the mustache. magic's passing, defense of bill russell, big O triple double machine, wilt(i guess), ralph sampson(they say he can dribble the ball well at 7' 4", but plagued with injuries)/
