What If Portland Traded the 4th pick for Batum?

I was thinking about this...tell me what you think.

The Blazers traded Nic Batum for the 4th overall pick.

The Blazers then have DeMarcus Cousins there. I would believe you take him there. You still do the deal for Luke Babbitt. With the 22nd and 34th pick, you can take Elliot Williams to believe that he could backup Brandon Roy. Then with the 34th pick, why not take Devin Ebanks to replace the defensive wing you would like. With that, now you have the ability to trade Greg Oden. Oden is only 22, he is injury prone but who's not giving you a 1st rounder for someone who could be a good defensive big. I believe there going to move Rudy Fernandez in the next couple weeks. (No Bias) What if they do NY's deal to get back Chandler to play the 3? What lineup would you rather have

Miller-Roy-Chandler-Aldridge-Camby

Matthews-Babbitt-Cousins-Ebanks-Bayless and 2 1st rounders in 2011 or 2012

or

Portland's current roster?

Excellent Topic

I believe that if they took Cousins with that pick, they would be able to contend in the playoffs coming out of the west for a championship. Also it would have gave them a lot of depth @ the 4-5 spot to be flexible with their rotation, or use someone else as trade bait to bring in a better asset to the team. Too bad Portland is high on Batum so we will never know how that would have panned out (once in a lifetime deal). All I have to say is Batum better show up, if not he just will not get the minutes.

No

I wouldn't trade Batum for the 4th pick.

The Blazers are smart for declining.

Portland has been all about

Portland has been all about character guys recently since the Jailblazers era so even though Cousins would clearly be the pick talent-wise, I just don't know. It really is an interesting question. This team has also developed phenomenal chemistry over the years, which is why I think they turned down the pick. With Cousins you'd have to figure that they would have that anti-Jailblazers ideal in my mind, and they already have $26 million committed to Aldridge, Camby and Oden, plus $7.4 million going to Pryzbilla, and they still seem to have confidence in Oden and they really like Aldridge. I think even though he's the guy they assumedly turned down, Wes Johnson would've been the best fit due to his not having virtually any downside and ability to pitch in immediately with his jump shooting ability, experience, well-honed athleticism and unselfishness.

Simple really

Would you trade your starting SF for a back up PF? Cousins has a lot of potential and I can see why people are high on him, but they have Aldridge and Aldridge is better.

Doesnt make sense, I think

Doesnt make sense, I think Batum is younger, and arguably better than Wesley Johnson now.

I like Cousins but is he better than Oden? maybe but either way neither would get big minutes especially since they still have Camby, and Pryzbilla.

And no way im trading Oden for a first like because he has the potential if healthy to make most teams (even the Twolves) maybe a playoff team.

I would do a sign and trade but i doubt wed get as much value there. So id rather just keep Oden and extend him.

The Blazers wouldn't take Wes Johnson, they'd take Cousins.

I think Cousins would be better. Pryzbilla is coming off a injury and he's a FA next season. Camby is 34 years old. He's won't be around in 3 seasons either.

Oden is not that good when healthy. He's still raw offensively. He is not the difference in a team making the playoffs or not. Even when he's healthy.

I think it was smart that

I think it was smart that they didn't trade Batum for the 4th pick. The Blazers already have 2 solid centers in Camby and Oden(even though he's injury prone), and I think that the Blazers still have hope in Oden to become that great center people thought he was going to be be. If they traded for the 4th pick and drafted Cousins, it would be a a while before he cracked the rotation.

@Mr.Knick 32

I don't think the Blazers are ready to move Oden yet. When the Chris Paul to-the-blazers rumors were arising, people were still questioning whether they should trade Oden for Paul. That shows that the Blazers still have faith in him.

So what if hes raw

So what if hes raw offensivly?

Dwight Howard is too, he averaged 11 points in 24 minutes a game thats not terribly, and he shot 60% from the field.

And to me hes easily one of the most dominating post defender in the league, he needs to work on ticky tacky fouls but how many bigs play better post defense than him? Dwight Howard..... aand maybe Kendrick Perkins.

Also hes one of the better rebounders in the league.

If he played 36 minutes a game for them he would average 17, 12, and 3.5.

I think his scoring numbers would go even more up with more up with a good passing point guard.

Dwight Howard averages 20

Dwight Howard can average 20 points per game though and has averaged 20 2 out of 3 seasons. His numbers drop because of Carter this season. Plus, Howard has a little hook in his game as well. Oden does not. Alot of his baskets are overpowering dunks and bunny layups.

He's not the greatest post defender to be honest. Alot of his fouls are due to his positioning and not just "ticky tack"

PER 36 are not legit numbers to go off of IMO. I don't think he will ever average 17 points in this league. He's a 14 point, 10 rebound, 2 block player at best, even then- He might miss 30 games a season as well with leg injuries and other injuries.

I think 3 years down the line, DeMarcus Cousins will be better then Greg Oden. Both don't have a passing point guard so it will be interesting how both play this season and in the future.

Oden has a decent hook shot.

Oden has a decent hook shot. And he doesnt have many chances within their offense to create his shot so we havent been able too see too many moves but he has a great drop step, and a decent hook shot.

And Odens fouls are mainly when he gos against guards, but theres no denying hes an absolutely dominating post defender.

Thats your opinion, I think its extremly premature to say hell never average 17 points a game. Its not like he gets that many shots in their offense right now.

I dunno. Even when he played,

I dunno. Even when he played, he wasn't developing on offensive as people believed. His defensive abilities improved 100%.

I think he would have like a Mutombo carreer. Before 2001, he was a good scorer and great defender but never posted 15ppg a game. I think that's Oden's ceiling right now IMO.

lol

Funny thread...You honestly think Demarcus would play over Oden? Lol...watch some Blazer games bro. Oden doesn't need to score. He blocks shots, defends and rebounds at a high rate. Demarcus is a very talented player and will put up good stats, but stats don't translate into wins. Demarcus is a terrible defender and he doesn't seem like a player who would want to be a third option behind Roy and Aldridge.

Also, I wouldn't want the 4th pick as a Blazer fan. We don't need Demarcus and Batum is instrumental to this team as one of the top perimeter defenders in the league; as well as a lights out shooter from 3.

Lastly, how can you say Oden will NEVER average 17 points? He averaged 11 being the 3rd and sometime the 4th option while playing limited minutes. Play Oden 35 mpg and he will be one of the best big men in the league (considering he is healthy of course). Demarcus is a very talented player, but I would never want him over Oden.

I never said Never, I just

I never said Never, I just don't see it.

Well, I don't think Oden is playing over Camby. Oden i might be good down the road but I don't see the superstar many people believe he would be coming out of OSU. Even if he was the 2nd option on another team ( say Minnesota) I don't think he produce 17 points per game. He's game is not like that. He gets tip ins, bunny layups and dunks. I believe his career will be alot like Mutombo. That's IMO.

I think Babbitt will be really good in 2 seasons to where he could be the 6th man/ 3 point shooter. Ebanks has the defensive potential as well.

All in all, I rather have Babbitt, Ebanks, Cousins then Batum, Oden in 3 years. That's just me.

Well

I wouldn't. I was optimistic about Babbitt, but he can't defend 3's...And that is the position he will primarily playing. I have never liked Ebanks at all...He had a nice summer league, but I don't take much from that. On top of that he has character issues so I'm not sure how he is in the locker room. And like I said about Cousins...HELL of a scorer and rebounder, but I'm not sure if that translates into wins (*cough* *cough* Al Jefferson). Ebanks will never be as good as Batum (not even close lol) and Babbitt just can't find a position.

And dude, Mutombo? Mutombo had a great career and was an all-star many times.

But if you don't take much

But if you don't take much from summer league, you cannot take in the fact Babbitt cannot defend 3's.

I think Babbitt is alright, he should hold his own. Ebanks should be a great defender plus he's getting Kobe to guard in practices? Artest in his ear on defense? I'm interested to see that.

Cousins, I agree with you to a point. He should be a high level player by year 3 but unlike Jefferson, he isin't being pushed to a team with NO talent on his side. If you had put Cousins ( a classic brusier) next to Aldridge ( pick and pop guy)...I think it would be more interesting. Cousins should be a solid defender as well in his prime.

Well

There are some things that you can see though in summer league that translates into the regular season (body language, defense etc). I haven't given up all hope on him lol. I think he can be a mismatch 4 if he adds strength.

Batum

Nicolas Batum is a rare kind of player. He can shoot, pass, and defend any posistion effectively. He is efficient (high %s and low TOs) and has a high basketball IQ. He's the kind of player that makes your team better in every way and there is no downside to playing him.

People in Portland are extremely high on Batum. I can guarantee you that the Blazers would sooner trade Aldridge or Oden before trading Batum. He has the potential to be a Scottie Pippen type of player.

Wesley Johnson and DeMarcus Cousins could be good NBA players, but not in the same way Nicolas Batum could be.
