BasketballJunkie224Participantwhat does he have to gain by coming back?

HuRRiCaNeS324ParticipantWow i am shocked as well, and sad to lol. I wanna see him play in the NBA.
Money wise, Marcus Smart made a bad decision imo. He would of been top three for sure, Now next year with a ridiculously deep draft, he will be on the cusp of the top 10.
But i can see why he did it. He does need to improve his PG skills, such as handling the ball and cutting down on turnovers, as well as improving his jump shot. Also, this guy is playing with his childhood best friend, maybe he just doesn’t wanna let go yet. So many times you hear players saying they regret leaving college so early and probably Smart doesn’t wanna be one of those people.

SDEParticipantCollege is really really fun. I can understand why he want to come back. He with his friends and i bet its a bunch of girls on campus that looks amazing.
I think when players leave early they fold under the pressure from people to grab the money and run.
i wouldn’t have mind to see players like Rivers or J.Lamb or K Marshall stay. they were not ready

220ParticipantAgreed overall, but I wouldn’t say Jeremy Lamb wasn’t ready. Lamb just has the current misfortune to be on one of the leagues best teams. Lamb is stuck behind Thabo Sefolosha and Kevin Martin.

Anton123ParticipantPeople often forget basketball players are human. What if he just not wants to become a professional player yet?

bjcart53ParticipantSome players also play for the 2nd contract more than the first. He can shore up a few holes in his game and come in better. They draft on talent but if talent doesn’t turn into production, they draft the next talented player to replace your lack of development. Flipside if you come in ready u get to shine when given the opportunity and become an intricate piece they build around. I like smart sticking around

JeffreyhardenParticipantWhat if he doesn’t think that he is ready to contribute to the NBA next year and want to play 15 years in the NBA, instead of just becoming a project and not having a real future in the NBA. Everyone knows that the Orlando Magic would have more then likely picked him unless Trey “day” Burke would make a push. But I like the decision, why rush to the NBA, why are others worried about his money, why shouldn’t he wait so he can make sure that he is ready, because everyone knows 1st bad game he has their is going to be a site full of people calling him a bust (sorry but people love to hate on pro’s like they are any better)

Tongue-Out-Like-23ParticipantHe does shoot 40% from the field and can’t make a three. Maybe another year in college is going to help him get his shot together and he’ll still be a top-7 pick if he puts the work in a deep draft

RUDEBOY_ParticipantAlot of People willbe SHOCKED IF He does stay in school….
If Smart does remain in college, a weak draft just got weaker..Dude could’ve been the 1st pick….Now i believe guys like Ledo, the kid from Greece,Pelle and some foreigners will be looked at much closer at the combine……..
Will the NBA even bother to hold a draft this year? lol

jerb2011ParticipantI am happy he is coming back because he needs to still work on his passing, shooting, decision-making, and since he came back, Markelle Brown, and LeBryan Nash are coming back (although they were not as important in terms of NBA talent, even though they have the potential). Also, Smart stayed to bring in recruit Stevie Clark. Clark said he would commit to OK State if Smart returned.

domeico7ParticipantHe won’t improve his stock but he can improve his game. I actually liked that he wants to improve himself and get into the league ready, I respect that.

MalcolmxParticipantMarcus Smart’s best quote was “Memories over Money.” Yes he comes from poverty and a single mother, but he sums it up all right there,he doesn’t care about the big contract he can sign right now,he wants to stay with his childhood guy Phil Forte and enjoy college athletics and life.

alingeParticipantWhen you read about where he came from it is even more amazing he passed on the money

A.M.G.ParticipantAlthough I can appreciate wanting to experience more college ball, college girls, quality education for free, etc. he is literally putting off the equivalent of winning a lottery jackpot for a year. He would be lottery pick this year, guaranteed, that is guaranteed millions for multiple years. His next year in college he could have a career ending injury, or have his stock take a plunge for whatever other reason, and never see most of that money again. Of course it’s up to him, but I have to say when you are probable top 10 pick, you really should not turn it down. Although I guess Blake Griffin did, and it turned out all right for him… USUALLY you should not turn it down. Smart in particular seems unlikely to see his draft stock rise due to an extra year in college. If anything he might not improve much, and his athleticism will come into question more.

strobox88ParticipantA lot of people are forgetting Smart is a PG. If he can improve his game, he’ll still be one of the top 2-3 PGs to get drafted next year. With his upside, I’m expecting him to have an amazing season next year while we see his stock still hovering around the 3-7 range.
0 - Posted on: Wed, 04/17/2013 - 11:15am #763858
IndianaBasketballParticipantIt’s all about that second contract.
I’m surprised he returned, but I don’t think it’s a bad decision. It’ll only be a bad decision if he has a terrible season and his stock plummets. I doubt that’ll happen though. He’s only going to get better IMO.

TyroberParticipantI don’t like it when people say he is coming back to work on his game. The guy was a likely a top 3 pick and how is he going to get better playing college guys instead of being in the NBA and getting paid to get better. Is he going to get more quality coaching in college or the NBA? The difference from the #3 pick and the #8 is a few million over the first few years.
0 - Posted on: Wed, 04/17/2013 - 11:32am #763866
jmarg25ParticipantSome are saying he still needs to work on his game, which he does. However if he goes into the NBA, won’t he have more time to practice? And he would definitely be a top five pick. I think it just about getting a college education, maybe he’s not personally ready yet.
0 - Posted on: Wed, 04/17/2013 - 12:06pm #763874
TallmanNYCParticipantWhat if his shooting percentage doesn’t go up? Doesn’t his stock drop? He is being drafted on potential. He doesn’t need a bad year to hurt his stock; he has to play better next year or his stock is going down. He has to be a lot better to get picked top five next year.
The 4th pick in the draft is guaranteed $10 million over three years. The 15th pick is guaranteed $4.6 million. Also the team options for 4th and 5th year are lower. Basically, if he would have gone 4th and staying in another year knocks him back to 15th, he will have to wait until his 6th year in the league to even have a shot of making what he could be making starting this October.
Wow.
But there is more to life than money. And the 15th pick is still enough money to retire on if you are prudent with your cash (which of course no person in professional sports has ever been that frugal, but that is another story).

sheltwon3ParticipantMarcus Smart is looking at his second contract. I think this will help him long term.
0- Posted on: Thu, 04/18/2013 - 4:11am #764082
TallmanNYCParticipantYou mean he is looking at his contract starting in 2019? That is when he will be off the rookie salary scale and he can sign as a restricted free agent.

GrandmamaParticipantA jump shot and a better feel for the PG position maybe….
0 - Posted on: Wed, 04/17/2013 - 5:47pm #763964
scoutguruParticipantHe’s ready to be drafted, and drafted relatively high at that, but not ready to contribute at a major high level, as most rookies arent. Working on his game (shooting, guys will go under pick all day in nba, lacks speed to blow-by) and dominating college should be his next goal. Nba coaches are game/ego managers. College theres more teaching and learning involved. And he played, unsurprisingly like a freshman sometimes, and the fact that he was playing a new position probably added to that. If ur an instant gratification guy then its a bad decision; long term perspective guy, may turn out better over time.

Dale WorthingtonParticipantOklahoma State is returning their entire starting 5.
They’re probably gonna be a top 3 team in the game next year.
