Here’s a list of players that get too much sh!t from NBA talky types and can actually really help a team in the right situation. Players who’ve been picked apart and their talent’s been forgotten in favor of their flaws, and that if I were a GM I would capitalize on this and trade for them, listed in no particular order.

    1 – Josh Smith.

Yes, a terrible contract, but if you have cap space, a gap at the 4 (NOT the 3), and a dead weight contract (Jefferson, Biedrins, Wallace) you could probably have him for almost free. Let’s not forget that he’s a special athlete (former dunk contest winner), who brings awesome rebounding and rim protection, a great passer, and a guy who can create shots from the high post. Shot selection is an issue, but a fixable one, all you need is a coach who will pull him when he jacks one of those terrible jumpers. Let’s not forget that this inneficiency is a quite new issue for him (career FG% 46), and that he’s averaged over 2 blocks per game for his career.

    2 – Dion Waiters.

This kid gets buckets. Playing next to a ball-dominant PG who hates him, in a dysfunctional organization with a terrible offensive coach/system, he’s averaged 15 ppg off of 43% shooting this year. That percentage is also kinda unfair as he can get to the line and shoot threes. His value for the Cavs is severely deflated by playing next to Kyrie Irving, and it seems like he could be snagged for a first-round pick and a semi-promising youngun, Andre Roberson, Shabazz Muhammad, MarShon Brooks, one of those types.

    3 – Eric Gordon.

This guy is in the J-Smoove league of underrated useful players on bad contracts who could be snagged for free. He averaged 22 ppg for the Clips just 3 years ago. He’s a unique, clutch scorer who could really help an anemic, or just under-supplied playoff offense such as Chicago, Indy, NYK, or Memphis.

    4 – J.J. Hickson

One of the best rebounders in the league, especially offensively, he’s a bit of a forgotten man with the revelation of his bad defense and involvement in dumb trades. He’ll get you 2 or 3 extra possessions each game that another PF wouldn’t, and he’s a solid inside finisher. He’d fit well off the bench in Indy next to Roy Hibbert’s rim protection and unimpressive rebounding. Could probably be acquired for a second rounder.

Those are the four I could come up with that were good enough fits with the criteria to do write-ups about, I’d also like to suggest Anthony Bennett, Tristan Thompson, and Kris Humphries.

Al Jefferson is the definition of Undervaluved… That man gets no love and puts in work in the paint as a old school back to the basket center. Consistently putting up top 5 center numbers every year since 07′

Agreed but this post was more through the lense of an opportunistic GM, as in, who could I get for below their true value, as opposed to a listing of underrated players, and while Jefferson is underrated (soon to not be, he’s trendy), he wouldn’t be cheap on the trade market.

Gordon wont ever sniff 22 points a game again unless its on a bottom feeder team. He is injury prone and when he does get on the court he lacks the explosiveness he once had.
