llperezjust wanted to get this out there
i am a die hard ucla fan. For the most part i rate ucla players higher then most. Considering no college has had more nba players in any of the last 3 nba seasons (possibly more didnt look that far back) i think its safe to say we take our nba prospects seriously in Westwood. Jordan Farmar said it best when asked about his recruiting process. He said it came down to Florida with Billy Donovan telling him about how much he would be focused in the offense and how much freedom he would get versus ucla where ben howland said "if you play for me, you will play defense and win". That is the mantra of ucla basketball since ben howland took over and every ucla recruit has repeated it saying ben tells you you will play defense for him and like it. Russel westbrook, arron afflalo, darren collison, jrue holiday, luc richard mbah a moute, ryan hollins have all made their stamp in the nba based on defense. Kevin love and farmar are more offensive prone but do what they can on defense. Fact is, howland gets you ready to play NBA one on one defense. THere is zero zone at ucla. No "who has my help". You gaurd your man, and if you cant you sit, period. No one on one play on offesne either. Its all about moving the ball and trying to get quality possesions and keep the score in the 50’s or 60’s.
Now with that rabmling out the way, i just want to say tyler honeycutt is the next big STEAL from UCLA. I do belive it might take him a year. His body and game is stll growing. But make no doubt about it, this guy defends first and formost. He can shoot. He can pass. He led the pac 10 in blocks at over 2 a game. He is 6-8 and a great athlete who has video clips of him clearing up to 5 people in a dunk contest. He covers ground with ease coming out of nowhere to make plays. This guy is not nearly as raw as people think. In his NCAA tournament games vs Michigan state and florida, he averaged 15 points, 5rebounds, 5assists, 4blocks and 2 steals and shot 6/10 from 3 in those games. He stuffs the stats nightly.
So his dribbling needs work and he is not a "go to player" at the nba level. How many rookies this year are NBA go to players?

stealsgaloreParticipantI wish the Spurs would’ve taken him at 29, could’ve replaced Jefferson, he’s going to be a very solid player at the next level, especially if he extends his range to the NBA 3.

BBall4life88ParticipantWith all that talent you would think UCLA would be much better, like one of the best teams in the country year after year. Sure his players make it to the NBA and most do well but is that because of Howland? or because they actually get more freedom to play like themselves.
Howlands teams don’t win enough with all the talent they have. His mantra is "if you play for me, you will play defense and win." Except the fact that they don’t win!
Maybe he’d be a better NBA coach because his style doesn’t translate to wins in the NCAA.

BlueLacesParticipantWhat type of pro do you think Malcolm Lee is going to be? I have to admit, I don’t watch much UCLA basketball (or West Coast teams for that matter) due to the time change and the fact that I am usually sleeping when they are playing. The only reason why I am still up now is because of PTO tomorrow…

KayjayParticipantI have no clue about Tyler Honeycutt so I’m obviously taking your word for it. I was upset with the Kings missing out on Knight, but Jimmer isn’t a bad runner-up. And Honeycutt seems like a steal to me too. If he pans out, the Kings will finally have their small forward that actually earned a starting position. Thanks llperez.

BlueLacesParticipantAnd Ben Howland doesn’t win??? He is just a couple years removed from three straight final fours. It’s not his fault that his top recruits leave after their freshmen or sophomore seasons.

llperezhe’s been at ucla for 7 seasons and has gone to the final 4 3 times and the seoncd round 2 other times. Im not sure he "doesnt win". Also, very few guys stay 4 years for him. Farmar, afflaolo, love, westbrook, holiday, honeyucutt, lee, mbah a moute all left early. Collison was the only pro guy who really stayed.
With that said, i agree howland isnt the best coach for college success.

llperez@bluelaces, malcolm lee is a role player at best. He can defend either gaurd spot which is what he really has going for him, and he does all the little things right playing within the team concept. But this guy never did anything special at ucla or showed pg abilities or was nearly the athlete russel westbrook was. I think he mnight make a roster but he also might be out the league quick. Not too high on him but if he somehow does succeed it would look great for ucla gaurds.

ilike.panochasParticipantHoneycutt is Trevor Ariza 2.0 and is even drafted in the 2nd round much like Ariza. The similarities to me are cut and dry.

llpereznot that the comparison is bad, but one big difference between ariza and honeycutt is passing. Honeycutt loves to dish and ariza had blinders on and was arguably the most selfish individual basketball player i ever saw at ucla.

llperezhere’s anopther thing about ucla basketball thats kinda off topic but im gonna throw it out there. Most guys, nba or not, dont really like playing for ben howland which is why so many guys leave early or transfer. Just in the last few years about 5-6 guys have transferred including drew dordan who was a starter. Current players like josh smith and reeves nelson are talking about splitting town early. I have a friend(not too close) who played for the bruins for 3 years and is still a student there and is close to the program and he said the players really dont care for ben and how he handles the draft process and how he doesnt help them get draft recognition as much as other college coaches do.

PulseGlazerParticipantI like Honeycutt a lot. I was hoping the Nets got him. He can pass, shoot and defend. That’s pretty much all I want out of my roleplayers. Sure, he needs more strength, but you don’t draft for the year after the draft in the 20s.

cward23ParticipantSounds like what Calipari says. Both players get good talent, win with that talent, and gets stars to buy into the system and play defense. This is why those are two of my favorite teams
