I’ll be honest… I haven’t been the biggest follower of college basketball this season… Or really the last couple of seasons.

I’m watching this dude Trey Burke play though and why isn’t he projected higher in the draft? I feel like he has everything you want in a point guard. He’s fundamentally sound, confident, great ball handler, unselfish, unphased by pressure… Good shooter off of the dribble or the catch. Long arms on defense. For some reason he reminds me of Dominic James, except he’s more fundamentally sound and a better shooter.

Somebody give me the run down on him… What’s holding him back?

I don’t know what’s holding him back. He should be a top 10 pick and a fantastic pro. He can do anything you want your point guard to do.

I am extremely impressed with Mitch McGary. He is ALL ENERGY . Terrific rebounder, nice creator in the high post ,good finisher, has shown a nice jumper too. He can at least be a rich man’s Nick Collison as a 1st big off the bench on a contender. Extremely valuable team player , gladly take him in the 15-25 range. Culture changer.

Burke should be a top 10 pick with all those disappointing performances in 2nd round in past two days.

Chris Paul is only 6 foot. Why can’t Burke be a top 10 pick.

Michigan is playing EXACTLY the way I expected them to, I have them in my final 4, and to be honest I don’t think Kansas will beat them, the way they’re just absolutely DISMANTLING VCU, makes me believe that they’re on their way to the final 4, they have a great backcourt in Burke and Hardaway, a great wing scorer in Glenn Robinson, and Mitch McGary has really come int his own and has been DOMINANT today, really great to watch this Michigan team playing this way.

Although I hope they’re not too tired after this havoc defense of VCU, even though it hasn’t been effective, Michigan still has had to work their a$$es off to break down this VCU defense. But it doesn’t hurt that this is essentially a home game for Michigan.

Burke will shoot up the board with lack of point guards, I’d take him over MCW any day. I really want the Suns to take Burke but they won’t give up on Marshal that fast and in 5 years they’re going to be kicking themselves.

@avavavalis, what makes you think he’s a “rich mans” collison? What does he do better than Collison did at KU? I would say he’s very similar to Collison and I made that comparison a couple of months ago but I don’t see him as being more refined or more athletic to consider him “richer”

For starters McGary is bigger, stronger and more athletic than Collison was at the same stage. With his strength he’ll easily be able to be a legit C in the NBA.

That’s a personal opinion first of all. McGary looks stronger,a bit more athletic and a better finisher to me. I may be wrong but i think McGary can average more than 9.5-8 in 30 minutes on his third season in the NBA and after playing 4 years of college ball.

That’s fair, I think you’re right about him being stronger and more athletic at this point in his career. I’m not trying to attack you or anything, I really just don’t think people give Collison the credit I believe he deserves. I’m high on McGary as well I just hope he stays all four years .

Collison is the soul of this Thunder team and was a monster in College, indeed.

A senior or junior McGary with a legit post game and a more consistent jumper can sniff a lottery selection but he is a 20 year old freshman so it’s tough to declare for the Draft at 24.

I’ve been big on Trey Burke this whole season. I remember after the Ohio St game a lot of people were downing him because Craft rattled him a little bit. But as you all said, he does EVERYTHING you would want your point guard to do. As I stated before, if I’m a GM needing a pg in the lottery, I’ll take Burke without hesitation.

all season…..with the success of a chris paul i don’t see why burke shouldn’t be the first pg taken….he’s been consistently good all season, he gets it you can’t go wrong with him. He will be a perennial all star you can book it. So what he’s 6ft….he’s everything you could want in a pg so what he’s not 6’4, he’s a 1 not a 2 6ft is fine.

The reason why Trey Burke isn’t a top three pick this year besides the obvious height issue is the fact that he’s not overly athletic. NBA teams are absolute enamored with athleticism and potential; and thus, despite the fact that Trey Burke has everything you could want in a point guard, many teams will overlook him. Chris Paul as small as he is, is a really fantastic athlete, he’s just so skilled that many fail to associate him as a superb athlete.

He’s easily the best ball handler in the draft, and he’s a good shooter off the dribble and a good passer when he wants to be. The only issues with him really are the lack of size/athleticism that’s been pretty well documented, his struggles defensively, and his struggle in isolation. He’s not very good at creating things without a screen to work with.

I think he’ll be a solid pro, but I don’t think he’s going to be special personally. I see him as a good backup PG at the end of the day. I can’t really put my finger on why exactly, but something about the way he plays makes me think he’s going to struggle more at the NBA level when he’s playing against better athletes.

Edit: I don’t know, maybe it was just his struggle trying to beat Nate Wolters off the dribble that kinda turned me off from him, but I feel like a good NBA PG would have beaten him off the dribble with ease. For comparison’s sake, MCW is a terrible shooter and finisher compared to Burke at this point in time, but he’s much better at beating his man one on one and getting into the lane with his long/quick first step.

He’s actually really good defensively, he’s the best shooter off the dribble in the nation and he’ll have one of the best, if not the best handles in the upcoming draft.

The only thing mcw has over him is size, but as far as actual skills, intangibles and running an offense, Burke is better.

MCW has better vision, passing ability, rebounding, and defense.

Burke is not actually really good defensively. He has quick hands, but he gets beat off the dribble relatively easily.

I’ll just have to disagree with mcw being the better passer. Part of being a good passer is knowing when to make passes. Mcw still makes lazy, sloppy passes that get picked off at the college level and will get picked off even more in the nba. He also has a tendency to leave his feet to pass and float passes, which won’t fly in the nba either. Burke OTOH has the best assist TO ratio in the nation while also being a top assist guy. The other stuff you mentioned is a function of size.

No he actually is good defensively. Quick hands, long arms, great anticipation and lateral quickness, body strength, communicates well and has a high iq. He’s also very well coached in position defense and does a lot of film study on his own.

I feel Trey Burke is one of the safer picks in this draft. At worst he can be a Mike Conley type PG. Very smart player, with enough ability to be possibly an All-Star caliber PG.
