I was reading this on espn’s insider today:
Thought some of you guys who don’t have it might find it interesting.
If Chris Bosh doesn’t return to the Raptors — and it’s looking like the front office is bracing for a potential sign-and-trade with Bosh — they’ll certainly be a gaping hole in their frontcourt.
But with the 13th pick in the draft, they should be able to find someone to fill in, albeit not at Bosh’s highly productive level.
So whom might they target? Well, TrueHoop Network site Raptors Republic took a stab at some potential draft targets today, and drummed up two big men with high motors: Baylor’s Ekpe Udoh and Marshall’s Hassan Whiteside, two players that are slated somewhere in the 9-15 range, by most estimates.
If Toronto decides not to look big, Raptors Republic surmises Kentucky PG Eric Bledsoe could be in the mix if Jarrett Jack or Jose Calderon are traded, as well as Butler’s Gordon Hayward, who could challenge Hedo Turkoglu at small forward.

I think if Toronto and Bosh agree for a sign and trade- There are only 4 really good teams in position for that (San Antonio, Los Angeles, New York, Chicago)
I believe at 13, You could look at potential and I believe Hassan Whiteside could be the pick. He could come in and just play defense and rebound while getting PT and working on his offense. Udoh would be a solid pick but if you do that- I believe your really giving up alot on the defense with Hedo-Udoh-Bargiani frontcourt.

Anyway, I think they need a bruiser to complement Bargnani. Aldrich probably won’t be on the board though…
What do you guys think about Orton? Seems like a perfect fit…

He is a pretty mediocre rebounder. Watch him play. He doesn’t box out, he doesn’t hustle. He only gets rebounds because he is so tall in a very short conference.

Yes Toronto needs shot blocking and rebounding, but how would Udoh fill that void? He played in a zone scheme, amassed big numbers against a weak non-conference slate -big disparity between conference and non-conference in his numbers- and lacks the bulk and offensive skills to be the kind of power forward that becomes a starter. Even if Chris Bosh decides to leave, Toronto can get something in return by way of a sign-and-trade. Let’s say he goes to Miami, they can get back Beasley and maybe the first round pick they sent the Heat previously. Beasley is a better shot blocker, offensive threat, and rebounder than Udoh is or ever will be. Not to mention the fact that Beasley is younger.
The problem with Whiteside is that there is a lack of maturity and experience against high quality big men. There are legitimate concerns about whether he wants to work, and the translation of shot blocking on the college level to the NBA is at best mixed, especially for those who don’t have prototypical NBA bulk. Someone is going to take him, but it is hard for me to think an NBA team will do their due diligence and come away thinking this guy will have an immediate impact.
Bledsoe is another guy who won’t be an immediate starter. He may very well be a good idea in the long run, but they still are on the hook for another 3 years and $30 million with Jose Calderon and $15.5 million over three for Jack. It is a lot of money for mediocrity, but a suffocating number if either of those guys get relegated to third string because they take Bledsoe. Now if they could pawn off Calderon on a team that needs a pass first point, like New York for Curry’s expiring and a young wing, things might look a bit differently.

I think if Bosh does leave then Toronto goes into semi-rebuilding mode – they might even trade off Turkoglu and give the minutes to the younger guys like Weems and DeRozan. If I was drafting for the Raptors i would be inclined to go for either Ed Davis, Whiteside or Aldrich.
