Orlando loses big, as they traded Dipo and a late lotto pick for Serge. Flipping him for Ross and a mid-late 1st rounder is clearly less value.

TO gets the stretch PF they desperately need. Losing Ross isn’t ideal, but there will be no drop-off from him to Norman Powell playing 25 min/game moving forward. The Raps have plenty of young prospects and own the Clips first rounder this year as well, so the mid-late 1st pick isn’t a big deal.

Masi Ujiri is a god in my books. The asking price last off season was Ross, the 9th pick and another prospect. Good time to mix things up and Ross has always been a guy that tends to slump and drag his add at times. Hopefully Ibaka plays D and rebounds hard for us.

Depending on who is your "other prospect" that asking price might have been a better deal for Toronto. I personally think a first in this year’s loaded draft is worth more than Pöltl.

Nah Poeltl is a keeper. Alot of what he does won’t show on the statsheel but he is like a less physical more mobile/skilled Steven Adams. Kid has a bright future he is just behind Valanciunas/Nogueira on the depth chart. I don’t think a 25th pick is worth Jakob.

If you consider what they gave up to get Ibaka Orlando certainly loses but if you consider they were almost surely going to lose him this off season getting Ross and a first rounder is a pretty decent haul.

Toronto needed to do something and while this isn’t a move that will put them ahead of Cleveland in anyones mind it is a nice upgrade at the 4 spot which it seems they have needed forever.

Additionally, Orlando needed to tank for the sake of the franchise.  They wanted to make a playoff push this year, but that plan failed miserably. If they end up with a top 5 pick this year, I also wouldn’t necessarily see this trade as a loss for Orlando.  The loss was dealt when they traded for him

Depends on what version of ibaka Toronto gets and whether he is willing to resign there in the offseason. Theoretically, he gives them exactly the type of player they need to seriously challenge Cleveland, a big who can both stretch the floor and provide legit rim protection. However, his defensive focus has kind of waned in recent years. Considering he is in a contract year and playing for a contender again, hopefully he will be motivated.

Orlando was going to lose ibaka for nothing in the offseason, so at least they get something in return. First round picks always have the potential to be valuable no matter where they fall and Ross is still a young player with potential. It clears some of their logjam at pf for the remainder of the season. They may not be done dealing yet either.

It will take some time to see who ultimately wins this deal, but I see the advantages for both teams in the short run.

This is a really solid move for Toronto. Although Ibaka’s defense has dropped off a bit, he’s an upgrade defensively at a position of need for this team. He’s also having an underrated offensive season.

Concerning Orlando, I think everyone who follows this team knows the drill. They tried to rush the rebuild, and the pieces they drafted have not performed well enough or, quite frankly, flashed enough 2-way upside to justify their "win-now" moves. Thus they are forced to sell low again on one of their best assets. Par for the course for this front office.

Definitely Toronto wins, as everyone mentioned they basically gave up Oladipo and Sabonis for Ross and a late first rounder. I used to be a fan of Ross, but I just don’t think he’s that good. They’re better off playing Powell in my opinion. That dunk on Faried is still saucy though

At least Orlando got something Ibaka was not going to stay. The Magic needed a shooter especially with Serge leaving. We really don’t know how good Ross can be as Dwayne Casey never really let him loose snd hes slways been stuck in Detozans shadows. Frank Vogel shows confidence in him he had all the skills to be a dynamic scorer rather than just a shooter/dunker. He will be locked up for three years and has been a rotation player on a playoff team most of his career. They also get a late 1st so even know they shouldn’t have given up so much in the first place  they at least didn’t let pride get the best of them and salvaged willing to own up to their faults.

The only thing that concerns me now is that the Raptors are lacking quality wing depth. The only wing player off the bench is Powell. Probably going to be a lot of 2 point guard lineups for the rest of the year unless they can swing one of their big men for a wing.

       FREE BRUNO!

(Although I’m not sure if they view him as more of a four or wing)

I think it’s safe to say that the GM of Orlando is going to get fired at the end of the year…

They had a decent young core, and they completely gutted it, and now are starting all over, again. This team has no direction, no leadership, and most of all, no identity.

Magic are already in the hunt for a top pick, so running out a lineup of Biyombo, Gordon, Hezonja, Ross, and Payton should be fun to watch going forward, if they have the balls to actually do it. they need to go into full tank mode, and look to make more moves. Vuc and Biyombo should be on the block, but only traded if they should get something in return that is enticing. No salary dumps, and no "potential" prospects. They need to just start this all over, and hope they hit big in this years draft. Feel bad for Magic fans.

On the flip side this is exactly what the Raptors needed, and a move people saw coming since opening night. I’m glad Masi made the move, and one of little consequence. Ibaka stretches the floor, adds a decent rim protecter, and veteran leadership which is sorly lacking in TOR. Low key, this also stregthens the TOR bench, as the Raps have refused to play Powell (their best bench player…) because they are scared of losing him in FA with a big offer. I like their line-up, and hope Casey can figure out his rotations fast!

    Val-Nogueira

    Ibaka-Patterson

    Carrol-Powell

    Derozen-Powell

    Lowry-Joseph

Is easily the second best roster in the East. I don’t think they can get past the Cavs unless they play great, but I think their new found depth at the 4/5 is something most teams wish they had. I worry that they won’t get enough from their scorers come playoff time, but time will tell if Val and Ibaka are ready to take on that scoring burden. Should be a tough out either way.

What would possibly be fun about running out a lineup of Biyombo, Gordon, Hezonja, Ross, and Payton? It is exhibit A in why Rob Hennigan should be fired, maybe Exhibit B if you look at the contracts given to Biyombo, Fournier, Green, and Augustin, or maybe Exhibit C… oh screw it, if this idiot was a former player there would be a non-stop parade to hit him like a panada for his era of incompetence. Instead, there are still people who cover the team and league defending him!?!?!

Orlando gave up Ersan, Sabonis Jnr and Oladipo for Ibaka which has now become Terence Ross and a mid to late first round pick. So Orlando are the definite losers IMO.

Even if Toronto cannot retain Ibaka, they have dumped Ross’s salary to give them much more leverage to retain Lowry.

Toronto could well be bound for the Conference Finals again.

I like this trade for Toronto. Ibaka is the type of player they need at PF and I don’t think the cost was too high. First, they give up the lower pick of their’s and the Clipper’s, so they get to keep the better pick. Ross is an okay player, but to be honest I think Powell should be taking his minutes, so no big loss there. Now, I think this is a small win for Toronto if Ibaka walks after the season. If they can resign him, it is a big win. Due to Lowry’s cap hold, they would not have the ability to sign a big time free agent. This trade, in essance, gives them the chance to do so. Given that Ibaka is still only 27, being able to add him to their core would be a huge win.

It’s embarassing to see people judging this trade based on what the Magic gave up for Ibaka…
Let me cite the question "who wins THIS trade?"
Getting ross and a first rounder for a player who didn’t lived up to the expectations and was going to leave for sure this offseason is a really decent value. At least a B+. The Ibaka for Dipo,Ersan,Sabo? A big F, that’s not a question, not even at the time the trade was made…
The Magic made a mistake trading for Serge, but made the best out of it with this trade, still a penny on a dollar, but much better than losing Ibaka for nothing.

In school, if a student fails the course, but gets a C on the final exam, do you think it is really all that wrong to take a bigger picture look at what happened?

I’m very happy you are clever enough to see the bigger picture, but as I mentoined the question was -in your precedent- about the final exam’s grade, not about the course…
Orlando deserves a good grade on THAT trade and a very bad one for the offseason moves, they came out losing the Ibaka case for sure, everybody can talk about the previous bad Ibaka trade in related to this one, but to grade THIS trade based on the previous one isn’t ideal… Or your student may deserves an F for the final exam, just because he already failed the curse?
The first Ibaka trade was a very silly one at the moment they made it, and became even worser as the season faded, at least they got something back, which is good. May the Raptors should’ve waited a week to lower the price with a deadline-day panic.

I think Orlando is now the second worst organization behind the Kings….

I would still put Orlando above Brooklyn. But 3rd worst is still nothing to brag about.

Ibaka has a good chance to stay as well. There are some very strong conext ions he has to the organization. He shares the same agent as team Captain Kyle Lowry and has a great relationship with Masai Ujiri being from Congo. Ibaka has always been a showman and in Toronto he will be loved. Fans will really get behind Air Congo which will likely motivate him to get more emphatic blocks. I’m gonna say we retain him in free agency as long as the ream is somewhat successful.

I feel bad for Orlando fans. Besides having an awful season, management has seriously damaged this team’s future as well.

I will disagree with most here.

While last year’s trade from Orlando for Ibaka was clearly a bad idea and a bad trade, this one is decent. Ibaka is a free agent anyway and they obtain two assets for him, in a deal somewhat similar to the one they had last year.

You would argue Oladipo is a better player than Ross or that last year pick was lottery. But Ross is a better fit alongside Fournier and this year’s draft is way better anyway, s the pick might just have the same value.

What makes it even a good trade is Ross vs Oladipo contract. Oladipo was going to be a pseudo-max deal (and he is now) that arguably is not good for the money, Ross is only paid 10M$ a year.

It’s almost as if Orlando got back and reversed last year’s very bad trade overall, and that’s good. They lost some value of course but not as much as they could have with Ibaka a UFA anyway.

    report —

The Toronto Raptors held trade talks with the Oklahoma City Thunder on Serge Ibaka last June before he was dealt to the Orlando Magic.

The Thunder asked for Patrick Patterson, Norman Powell and the No. 9 overall pick that became Jakob Poeltl from the Raptors. Oklahoma City instead traded Ibaka to the Magic for Victor Oladipo, Ersan Ilyasova and the pick that became Domantas Sabonis.

Toronto acquired Ibaka on Tuesday from the Magic for Terrence Ross and a late first round pick in this year’s draft.

Masai Ujiri has long been interested in acquiring Ibaka.
