Off Topic: Manti Teo
Wow, he is getting blown up on Sportscenter right now. I think this has to be one of the most embarassing things I've witnessed in a while. Thoughts?
This is just weird and embarrassing.
I saw the same thing on ESPN twice and I'm still lost.
1. He never saw his "girlfriend"? Any pictures?
2. Who was the person in the phone faking bulimia (or wtv) the entire time in the relationship?
3. Did the person pretending to be his girlfriend die?
4. How did he find out his girlfriend never existed?
5. Why did he find out right after his g-ma died?
Seeing as me and Manti have the same ethnic backgrounds he's embarrassing my kind if this is true
nobody cares about race
Why does a Heisman candidate have an internet GF that he never met? You think he stayed faithful to her?
Apparently he wasn't in on this? Whatever. No way in the world that he wasn't a part of this. Internet girlfriend, fake name, fake pics, fake disease, fake death, fake grief... So wrong on so many levels and an absolute insult to anyone who has died of cancer, is suffering from cancer, or has a family member suffering from cancer. Worse than game fixing, in me eyes.
makes me sick
If you having girl problems I feel bad for you son...
I got 99 problems, but a b**** ain't one!
Everyone make sure to watch the video above the story. There is an interview with Gene Wojciichowski that is one of the more damning things you can imagine. It's the second part of the video, after Teo's comments and before PTI.
Johnny Manziel is pulling h*es left and right, but Teo can't?
You know, LBH, weird just doesn't begin to describe this situation. I think I need to marinate on this one a while longer...
I know, I remember when we won our division and led the state of South Carolina in defense; we were getting alot of "crew love", but a heisman candidate having to do online dating?!?!?!? Wtf
Di you read the original Deadspin article? Screw on-line dating, this whole thing was based on them ACTUALLY meeting, dating, visiting...only now is he trying to pass it off as online, because that is his only shot!
I brought a shawty home once after I took that b*tch to Olive Garden.... She put out but she was fakin' it. I was so insulted I got Teo'd!

That's worse than...worse than...worse than getting a cruch on a girl at Journalism Camp, am I right, fellas?
He's gonna end up on Catfish
and come on he couldnt Facetime or Skype or Oovoo his chick?? Somethings not right. Maybe that kid that set it up was right that Manti was behind this also.
Most insane thing I've ever heard about in sports. Most likely went from 1st round pick to 7th round or undrafted.
If this is a haux, and T'eo wasn't involved, that's sick and cruel. Definitely an odd situation.
Compounding the oddness, however, is the Arizona Cardinals fullback insisting she was real, and that he met her in person before she and Manti dated, that he met her family as well, and that he'd stayed in contact with her throughout.
This is from ESPN:
Reagan Mauia, an Arizona Cardinals fullback, said he believes Kekua existed because he met her in person when he and other Polynesian teammates and Pittsburgh Steelers star Troy Polamalu went to do charity work in American Samoa in June 2011. "This was before her and Manti," Mauia said Wednesday evening. "I don't think Manti was even in the picture, but she and I became good friends. We would talk off and on, just checking up on each other kind of thing. I am close to her family. When she was going through the loss of her father, I was -- I offered a comforting shoulder and just someone to bounce her emotions off. That was just from meeting her in Samoa." Mauia said Tuiasosopo -- whom Mauia believes is Kekua's cousin -- introduced the two. After the initial meeting, Mauia said he met her at an "after-party" for all of the athletes involved in the camp. "She was tall," he said. "Volleyball-type of physique. She was athletic, tall, beautiful. Long hair. Polynesian. She looked like a model ... " He said it is his understanding that Kekua's mother is operating her Twitter account. He said he'd never met her mother. When told by a reporter that she apparently might not have existed, Mauia said "No, she is real."
You guys see that tweet by Not Bill Walton? haha AJ McCarrons girl is Miss Alabama 2012 while Manti Teo's girl is Miss Narnia 2009, 2010, and 2011.
I make up dead girlfriends sometimes screaming "ayyyoooo Im Manti Te'o"
Could he be making this up because that Tuiasosopo dude got caught as the fake chick, & maybe Manti swings that way but scared to admit it?
yeah i thought he might be homo too and this is a cover up
He was the "BIG MAN" on campus but had to result to internet dating <<<<
Every time I think about an big recruit or big athlete on campus the scene in "He Got Game" comes to mind when Rick Fox leaves him in the room with them bad snow bunnies !!! Ain't no way in hell I'm internet dating if I'm him .
This whole thing is so bizarre..
This whole thing is so bizarre..
Bumpin in his ipod playlist
One of the weirdest stories I've ever read..
I'm so confused, I'm not sure why we're all jumping to conclusions, we still don't really know what's going on, and I really don't know what the real story is. But I feel for the guy regardless because it seems like he just made some bad and stupid decisions.
Heres the 2 MAJOR flaws in him being the "victim".
1. Though I don't have a source myself, various radio talk I was hearing today was saying that Manti had said in previous interviews they had met. He had admitted to this previously. He had never once aluted to the fact that they never met each other or that this was an internet type relationship. And as previous posters have said, he is a Heisman trophy finalist. Internet girlfriends are for guys who live in their parents basements, not 22 year olds about to make millions of dollars.
2. The first thing I would ask Manti, if I could, is what exactly happened when she died? Did you receive a call from a friend of hers pretending to be a doctor/family member? Did you not go to the funeral? Don't you think she would have mentioned if her BF was a star football player on Notre Dame? Don't you think he would have been asked to fly out there and see her before she dies? It just doesn't make sense. if it wasn't very serious, I still don't get that because why would someone of his stature randomly start talking to some girl, call her his "girl friend" but not get too into it?
Let me be honest, I hate Notre Dame, and I couldn't stand Teo, but the bottom line is I don't even wish upon him what's going to happen when all this comes out. I wish I could tell you their is a chance he was the one getting hosed here, but there are so many flaws in that argument I fail to believe its true. Please share if theirs a piece of this story I'm missing...
He's been quoted numerous times saying he met her. He even said he met her after a Stanford game where they exchanged numbers.
Her 'death' has been listed at different times, different days even but the scenario I heard was she told him to play for her (against Michigan or MSU I think) so he missed the funeral (coincidentally around the same time as his game) and said his 2 ints that game were for her.
The only reason he/ND made a statement was because today deadspin reported on it. Te'O and Notre Dame have both been aware of this situation for close to a month and said nothing until the deadspin story came out.
I don't believe anything he says, I believe he was in on it and that's beyond messed up.
To add to that, In a TV interview from him a few months ago that I just saw, he clearly was talking about her as if she was his close girlfriend, not some internet girl, (paraphrasing) "I feel like she's with me. When I talk to a pretty girl, I can just hear her saying 'why are you talking to her'". Who says that about a girl he's never met?
And finally, why wait this long to reveal all this? Hmmm...maybe to come up with the best bullshit story they could?? DUH! If this was this tragic of a revelation, it would have came out right away, because Manti would have been crushed, and would have had no reason to keep it quiet. But if he was in on it the whole time? A few solid weeks of game planning for this mess...
I don't think he knew but why would somebody do this. Let's explore;
Maybe it was somebody who wanted to get to know him and use that info to feed a agent. We always hear how knowing if a guy loves his Grandma's mac and cheese, makes a better recruiter. Maybe this guy who was claiming to be her brother wanted to piggy back off Manti when he turned pro. Maybe it was just mean. Maybe they wanted to throw him off and play with his mind to hurt him in games, like for betting and gambling purposes. Maybe it was a fan who would have preferred him going to USC or Hawaii, the guys name looks Hawaiian.
I can only think of 3 possible reasons for a guy to make up a girlfriend.
1. He is a high school sophomore.- Ala ProudGrandpa and needs a cover story for being a virgin or not having a girlfriend at his school.
2. He is gay and wants to keep the hound away.- It would be really hard for a leader of a football defense and middle linebacker at that to come out as gay. Something like a long distance relationship that is very deep could throw off all the questions from teammates or Fighting Irish groupies.
3. Publicity, a good story.- A beloved girlfriend that dies is a tragic story that could catapult you up in the Heisman. He seemed really sincere in the interview though and I don't think he knew, going by the eyeball test.
im so lost right nwo
according to manti's previous statements in interviews, he met her numerous times both during a game at stanford when he met her and in hawaii when he visited. Now he is saying its a hoax and she was just an internet girl? It doesnt add up. Too many questions to come to a conclusion, but all my senses are telling me he was in on this whole thing. And if thats the case and he used the death of a fake person to help increase his clebrity status, dude is a weirdo big time.
This was a big scheme! I said earlier in the year that Teo stopped talking about his gf. In a lot of his later interviews he only mentioned the death of his grandmother. I also recall an interview where he and one of his friends both referred to the alleged girlfriend as Manti's "friend" I know thats small but I noticed that.
I think this was all a scheme to make Manti's story to seem a little bit more triumphant and to catch the sympathy of fans and media. This all contributed to him being put up on a pedestal and basically gave him that extra attention he needed to be crowned one of the players in the college football. Some way it had to be coming out and was going to severely damage his image, so I'm thinking his PR told him he had to spin it as if the joke was played on him. Thats the best I can come up with.
It was good try by Te'o but Im not buying it. The words didnt even seem real when I read them on ESPN today. Im thinking he's looking like a total jerk now, from playing horribly in the National Championship to this, WOW.
Arizona Cardinals fullback says shes real and that hes friends with her? wtf? check bleacherreport out i cant post the link at the moment but daaaaaamn...
After the statement he made I'm so very confused. I feel like he was just trying to extend a sob story so not only he would get more attention but his team.
Thought about it for a little, bit, and I have a question: Why do we all care! Why do we care about some random football player's girlfriend and the joke that is apparently behind it? Isn't this a family issue that should be discussed behind closed doors? Who the fucck are we to get all up in his business and start accusing him of something this lowly and sick(if he really is behind it, he's a messed up dude) but my point is that we shouldn't care. Why are we paying so much attention to this and blasting him so much for this and making him out to be a criminal? Personally, I think this social media age is a curse in disguise and breaks all peace. The way this story is circulating makes me sick, and I'm not even talking about the story itself. And since when has anybody started believing Deadspin? I mean really people, is this what our society has come to?
We don't have to care to recognize a ridiculous story and point and laugh at the ridiculousness.
Also, it's more than just the story itself, but everything involved in it. It's a great case study in human psychology whether you believe in the "Catfish" angle and the whole schadenfreude aspect of others conspiring to manipulate a would-be dope, who happens to be a public figure...or if you believe that Te'o was in on it as well. For what purpose? Publicity, sympathy? Did he make her up to misdirect in order to hide something else? The possibilities are equally interesting, funny and tragic.
It also brings up another issue of the direction and credibility of sports journalism and maybe even journalism as a whole. Why did all these outlets run the dead girlfriend story without vetting first? All the interviews and segments were all ran with no fact checking, no nothing. According to the Deadspin article, the ESPN writer who interviewed Te'o admitted that ESPN rushed him to do the interview with Te'o without vetting the story. It just sounded like a good story so no fact checking was needed.
To be fair to the media, if I say "yeah my gf just died" you wouldn't typically respond with "prove it".
@aamir Deadspin is a very credible site, not sure why you wouldn't trust them.
Of course you'd show more tact than that, but if you look at the time line in the Deadspin article there are discrepancies all over the place. Like, when did she supposedly die? There were like 2-3 different dates given. All it would take was one call to confirm. There was nothing from her side of the family even though Te'o clearly said that they've helped him with their support. You'd figure that just gathering information to put to together the questions would require some background and fact checking.
