MadDogParticipantJust an idea I had when I was bored, based off another recent post, I thought it would be cool if people could post their top 20 player lists and the most highly rated list would give us the closest thing to a consensus ranking. No reasoning necessary, just a bit of fun. I’ll start:
1) Michael Jordan 2) Bill Russell 3) Magic Johnson 4) Wilt Chamberlain 5) Kareem Abdul Jabbar 6) Larry Bird 7) Tim Duncan 8) LeBron James 9) Hakeem Olajuwon 10) Kobe Bryant 11) Jerry West 12) Shaq 13) Julius Erving 14) Oscar Robertson 15) Kevin Garnett 16) David Robinson 17) Karl Malone 18) Isiah Thomas 19) Elgin Baylor 20) Dirk Nowitzki

HaleParticipant1. Michael Jordan-No explanation needed
2. Kareem Abdul Jabbar-Insane longevity with an amazing prime and an incredibly well rounded game. He’s the only player to ever average over 10 ppg 5 rpg 5 apg and 3 bpg for a season. He did it twice (28, 17, 5, 4 and 24, 13, 5, 4). Also the leagues all time leader scorer
3. Magic Johnson-I think Bird was slightly better but Magic had a few extra seasons on him. Likely the greatest passer ever and showed he was more then capable to score when needed
4. Larry Bird-Possibly on par with Jordan as a competitor, nobody has ever been as skilled and made more out of less. His creativity, desire, and cold-blooded nature are all legendary
5. Wilt Chamberlain-True dominance
6. Tim Duncan-I’ve never liked the guy but it’s hard to deny all he’s accomplished and he’s still going. On both sides of the ball he was dominant and his 2003 run was sensational
7. LeBron James-I’ve said many times he’s going to end up #2 but he has plenty of years left for that. Best player I’ve seen live in my lifetime
8. Bill Russell-The best defensive player and greatest winner of all time without a shadow of a doubt. But I think the guys listed ahead of him are just flat-out more qualified to be #1 guys because they are all so much better offensively
9. Shaquille O’Neal-He was virtually unguardable from 99-01 and on a team with a superstar in Kobe Bryant, was the clear alpha dog. He was also lazy and wasted away some potential due to injuries and getting fat. Should’ve been much higher (lower?) on this list
10. Kobe Bryant-Fiercest competitor since Jordan by far. Dynamite scorer who can do anything on a basketball court. His own ego and selfishness cost him more then it should have
11. Hakeem Olajuwon-A true marvel to watch. Post moves galore while also being an fantastic rim protector. Also one of the only guys you could probably consider winning a title by himself
12. Oscar Robertson-The LeBron of his era. At 6’5 he was an athletic freak with incredible strength who was a living triple double. Still it’s hard to take everything at face value when he played in an era with numbers and pace inflated so much
13. Jerry West-The Logo. Mr. Clutch (yet 1/9 in FInals). A truly great basketball mind. One of the first "modern" type shooting guards who could do everything exceptionally well
14. Karl Malone-Probably aided by Stockton but he’s the 2nd leading scorer ever, a 2x MVP, a physically imposing beast with incredible longevity
15. Julius Erving-A lot of his career "wasted away’ in the ABA because we typically don’t consider those things but he still ended up being a tremendous NBA player as well
Honestly that’s as far as I’ve gotten. For the next five spots there are so many guys to choose from and I’m probably forgetting someone important. Charles Barkley, Isaiah Thomas, Elgin Baylor, Bob Cousy, John Stockton, John Havlicek, Bob Pettit, Kevin Garnett, Scottie Pippen, Dirk Nowitzki, David Robinson, Patrick Ewing, etc.
Top of my head I’ll say: 16. Barkley 17. Isaiah 18. Robinson 19. Stockton 20. Garnett

BallinmvpParticipantProudGrandpa, How is Durant Better than Kobe? Durant will Undoubtly be a top 20 player but in no way or fashion should he be better than Kobe B. Bryant.
