My friends tweeted about how underrated Mike Conley is and I wanted to find out where they would rank him among the top point guards in the league. We eventually decided to each make our top15 PGs list. We decided on 15 because since we were sure Conley might not make it to our top 10 lists and he was the reason for the whole conversation anyway :)) We ranked PGs based mostly on the past season (sorry Derrick Rose). This was a very difficult task for all 3 of us

    My list: 1. Paul 2. Curry 3. Wall 4. Westbrook 5. Parker 6. Lillard 7. Irving 8. Dragic 9. Lowry 10. Lawson 11. Rondo 12. D.Williams 13. Conley 14. Walker 15. I. Thomas

    Friend 1: 1. Paul 2. Curry 3. Parker 4. Wall 5. Lillard 6. Irving 7. Rondo 8. Rubio 9. Conley 10. Dragic 11. Lowry 12. Lawson 13. D.Williams 14. Teague 15. Westbrook (<–made me laugh)

    Friend 2: 1. Paul 2. Curry 3. Parker 4. Irving 5. Wall 6. D. Williams 7. Lillard 8. Westbrook 9. Conley 10. Dragic 11. Lowry 12. Lawson 13. Walker 14. Rubio 15. Teague

What are you thoughts? What are your own lists? I really had a hard time leaving off Rubio, MCW, and Holiday. We didn’t consider Bledsoe a PG even tho you guys could if you want

Obviously you shouldn’t discuss basketball with friend 1….  Because D. Rose’s 10 games were better than Rubio’s season statistic wise…   Curry is too high as well… He doesn’t play defense and getting locked up by Chris Paul…   It kills me that he’s so soft on defense and literally guards the weakest link as a PG…  Side bar: Haven’t seen the bigger player do well on a PG yet, but teams still going with those match ups… Smh..

I think it gets muddy after 7..  So, I’ll just go…

    Paul – TP – Kyrie – Westbrook – Curry – Wall – Lillard

I don’t think TP gets enough respect and Paul is just THAT much better than everyone else… Kyrie, Westbrook, Curry, Wall, and Lillard are all interchangeable for me, as a great game or terrible one can move them ahead or back…

    1. Paul, 2. Curry, 3. Westbrook (when healthy), 4. Parker (underrated over the last decade), 5. Lillard (crunch-time big time scorer), 6. Wall (the best player on the 5th seed in the east), 7. Dragic (MIP), 8. Irving (I’m a big fan of Kyrie but he’s overrated because of his beatiful style of play), 9. Conley (catalyst of the Memphis offense), 10. Rondo (he is down this year because of the injury), 11. Teague (the most undrerated guard in NBA the last 3 seasons, have been to the playoffs every year with bad Hawks team, especially 2014), 12. Lowry (nice leader), 13. Lawson (nasty speed and improved court vision), 14. Deron Williams (not the same player since the trade), 15. Holiday (the injury robbed him) P.S.: Healthy D-Rose is number 1 or 2 IMO

Conley is pretty underrated because he never had a "breakout" year. He just gets a little bit better every year and keeps improving. I know Westbrook’s usage rate and shot selection, but I still think he is the 2nd best 2 way PG. I like that you guys had a realistic rating for Irving. Using your rules of no Rose:

    1. CP3

    2. Westbrook

    3. Parker

    4. Curry

    5. Wall

    6. Lillard

    7. Rondo

    8.Irving

    9. Bledsoe (I know he played sg all year- but could be a PG in the future)

    10. Dragic (had a sick year)

    11. Teague

    12. Lowrey

    13. Conley

    14. Lawson

    15. D Will (he looks like he is in pain just by running. Old Man Time hit him hard.)

    My list: 1. Paul 2. Parker 3. Westbrook (still too reckless) 4.Curry (below-average defender) 5. Lillard (below-average defender and worse shooter than Curry) 6. Wall (below-average shooting touch) 7. Irving (far below-average defender) 8. Lowry 9. Dragic 10. Rondo 11. Conley 12. D.Williams 13. Lawson 14. Teague 15. Walker

Agree with point above, Paul is above the rest, followed by Parker (he should get more respect, probably the point guard who is most consistent and is most valuable for his team). Westbrook, Curry, Lillard, Wall, Irving are all in the same territory, with the one with the most minor weakness highest.

In my opinion, a PG should be able to lead his team on both offense (racking up assists, explosive scoring) AND defense (one-on-one defense). Very few PGs can do it all, except for Paul and to a lesser extent (worse defender) Parker.

Using ESPN’s new "Real Plus/Minus", the rankings for point guard for the 2013/2014 season

1 – 5 Paul, Curry, Conley, Beverley, Westbrook

6-10 Bledsoe, Rubio, Lowry, Patty Mills, Ty Lawson

11-15 Walker, Parker, Prigioni, Hill, Lillard

    ESPN’s PER

1-5 Paul, Westbrook, Curry, Thomas, Lowry

6-10 Irving, Conley, Bledsoe, Wall, Lawson

11-15 Parker, Mills, Lillard, Williams, Holiday

    ESPNS – "Estimated Wins Added"

1-5 Paul, Curry, Conley, Beverley, Westbrook

6-10 Bledsoe, Rubio, Lowry, Mills, Lawson

11-15 Parker, Prigioni, Williams, Hill, Lillard

    Analysis

Advanced Stats suggest Mike Conley, Patrick Beverley and Patty Mills are extremely under-rated. Rubio might not be a great shooter, but his team is much better with him on the floor. Prigioni is quietly effective too.

I remember getting absolutely LAMBASTED on here for saying that Curry was ultimately a better PG and a better play than Rajon Rondo. I said, “just wait, you’ll see,” and was laughed to scorn.

      I agree with this.

Kyrie should never appear above Wall, Westbrook, or Rondo (although that one is a little foggy given the injuries).  He is one of the most talented players, but he hasn’t figured out how to use his skill to deliver wins yet.  If/when he does then he’s top 5, but certainly isn’t there yet.

So one year of going to the playoffs automatically put Wall ahead of Kyrie?  With you logic Kevin Love isn’t better than a lot of PF’s…  Just doesn’t make sense to me to go off of "wins" when doing INDIVIDUAL rankings…

Wall has a better team from the start of the year than Kyrie…   Westbrook has the #2 best player in the world on his team and Rondo hasn’t shown what he can do without KG and them (so the jury is still out)…  It’s very interesting you used the word "never" but ok…

Props to Jeff Teague for having a nice series, but are we being a bit "prisoner of the moment" ish when considering him as a top 10-12 PG? The Hawks weren’t even 500 and Teague has a relatively poor assist/turnover ratio for a top 10 guy. He’s solid, but lets not anoint him an elite guy because he’s had a nice series. We did that with Hibbert last year and look at him now

Please tell me what has Rubio done to be considered above  any one other the The Raymond Felton, George Hill types.I cant argue at all becuase its all personal perference.. For me give me Tony Parker.. a proven champion.  Does it all  scores.. runs a team, decent defender, Knows when to take over and when to defer.

I’m not confident with this list at all though. PG today is super deep and tough to rank.
