Top 10 Players That Shouldn't Have Been a Lottery Pick in the first place in this past decade...

Amdist the war going on in one thread...Let me make a post about some of the guys who were drafted in the lottery BUT most people knew would have a big chance to suck once their careers are starting.. This one is inspired by that thread about players that shouldn't have been drafted in the first round but that one was a little broad in a sense that guys like Darko is worthy of a first round pick let's just say, he should be ranged from 23-29th pick... That's why this Top 10 is all about the following guys that SHOULD have never been in the lottery in the first place...

First thing to consider, the 2000 draft class is EXCLUDED from this list since that draft class alone is the weakest ever to exist besides 1986...

Second, you might be looking at other busty names like Kwame Brown or Tyson Chandler... But let's put into mind this thought... Kwame Brown, Tyson Chandler and Eddy Curry are preps to pros players who teased a lot of people with their enormous potential... You can't blame GM's for taking them as early as top 5... So you won't find them on this list...

10 -Mike Sweetney (9th pick in 2003 by NYK) --- Let's start of with the Big Thump, Mike Sweetney... We know he's a skilled player with plenty of arsenal way back in college but we also know how he's one of the least athletic players to ever exist... At a massive 280 lbs, he has never improved nor try to lose weight and being a 9th pick in a draft class that's so strong, it's a damn waste for a city that could've gotten a much better player... tsk tsk tsk...

9- Joe Alexander (8th pick in 2008 by MIL) --- There is a fine line between being an excellent athlete and a skilled basketball player... Alexander is number one but not number two... He is one of those workout wonders who excelled and impressed a lot of GM's with his athleticism but the game of basketball is a 5 on 5 matter and so far, Joe has never been able to wow NBA Fans in a 5 on 5 game... When your option is not picked up by a team, you know something is very wrong... Milwaukee did admit about making that big mistake in drafting him whereas they could've gotten Marreese Speights or whoever was available at 8...

8- Julian Wright (13th pick in 2007 by NOH) --- He's one of those gifted athletes who shines with highlight reels and dunks... But so far, in his 3 years I've seen him play, that's all he ever does and it's a shame when he can't even help Chris Paul in leading the Hornets to winning... He's now in Toronto hoping for a fresh fresh start...

7- Saer Sene (10th pick in 2006 by SEA) --- He should have never been a Top 10 pick... He's an obviously raw basketball player who never have any huge skillset to warrant a lotto attention...I don't know with Seattle but they are intrigued by his long arms and jaw-dropping length, strength and athleticism... Well, he never really lasted long in the NBA and soon after, Seattle made up for its lousy 2006 draft by drafting Kevin Durant the following year...

6- Rafael Araujo (8th pick in 2004 by TOR) --- This one's a head scratcher... Araujo could've been one of those solid back up big men who can provide rebounding and defense especially with his size... But to hear his name in the lottery was (huh?)... Tell me, would you draft Jeff Foster with the 8th pick when you have guys like Shawn Marion and Jason Terry available in the draft? The Raptors did this in 2004... Yes, Araujo could've been Jeff Foster 2.0 with his rebounding skills and size but on a solid draft class of 2004 where you could have Andre Iguodala, Raptors made a too much risky pick...

5- Nikoloz Tskitishvili (5th pick in 2002 by DEN) --- 2002 was a year where a certain guy named Dirk Nowitzki exploded onto the scene in the NBA therefore making a trend of Euro kids coming out to enter the draft... The Denver Nuggets did bit the bullet on this one HOPING and praying to find the next Dirk... Well, they ended up with Skita while the Suns with the 9th pick in 2002 acquired a certain high school star named Amar'e Stoudemire...

4- Patrick O'Bryant (9th pick in 2006 by GSW) --- Slow, average athleticism and weak body... Still he gets drafted at 9th by the Warriors in need of a big man... POB failed to meet their expectations and in the first place, he should have never been a lottery pick...By the way, Aran, it's an insult to Brad Daugherty when you compare Patrick O'Bryant to him..lol

3- Darko Milicic (2nd pick in 2003 by DET) --- What were the Pistons thinking... 2nd pick for an unproven young kid from Serbia? Darko has clearly been a bust but things would have been different if he ended up in 16-29 range in the first round but to get drafted just behind LeBron James and drafted ahead of Dwyane Wade, Carmelo Anthony and Chris Bosh is downright stressful... Especially when the expectations of a second pick is almost as high as being the first pick...

2- Shelden Williams (5th pick in 2006 by ATL) --- This one had to suck for Atlanta... I remember this site calling the Hawks "drafting shenanigans"... and Yes, Shelden Williams was one of them.... People have never seen anything about this dude that's noteworthy of a top 5 pick considering guys like Brandon Roy and Rudy Gay are available at 5... The Hawks wasted another draft in 2006... The Landlord is a dominating force in college basketball but at 6'9 250 lbs, he'll never be more than Antonio Davis at best... and we all know Antonio Davis was never a top 5 pick in his draft class... Common sense was not used right here...

1- Adam Morrison (3rd pick in 2006 by CHA) --- Again.... Michael Jordan did it... He bought the hype... He bought the hype about Adam Morrison being the "next Larry Bird"... and that was a huge price to pay... I really thought Adam would have slid down the late first round because of the following reasons... First, he has diabetes... Many question whether he'll even have a 10 year career considering his condition... Second, he plays no D at all... Third, he's an average or even below average athlete... Yes he can shoot, he can score but he hasn't been doing that in the NBA... College is different for Morrison... he was a beast and he will be remembered as such in there... But this is the NBA, the league where the big boys play and as it turns out Morrison never grew up to be a big boy... He did have a championship ring which should serve as nice souvenirs wherever he decides to go next after getting cut by the Wizards...

NOTE: I will give chances for guys like Jordan Hill and Ekpe Udoh... I'll see them in the next 3 years in this list maybe...

Another great Fizer list....

Another great Fizer list.... BTW what do you think the weakest out of all these classes are? I remember a lot of people thinking 2006 was going to be really weak but that class does have four players (Bargnani, Aldridge, Gay, Rondo and ) that will likely have played in an all-star game when their career is over.

thanks da1

2000 is the WEAKEST ever... I can put a hundred reasons why they are the weakest...lol

I can consider 2001 as weak for having few All-Stars despite marquee names like Pau, J-Rich, Joe Johnson, Mehmo, Tony Parker etc... But the draft class also included Kwame, Tyson, Eddy Curry, Diop, Kedrick Brown etc... They're a little weak too but the 2000 draft class is the worst ever

The Sonics/Thunder have had a

The Sonics/Thunder have had a really interesting drafting history

Their lottery draft history in the past 10 years was:

Radmanovic, Collison, Ridnour, Robert Swift, Saer Sene and then all of a sudden they rebounded by drafting Durant, Westbrook and Harden, in adition to gettng Ibaka at 24

Now obviously Darko sucks,

Now obviously Darko sucks, but I think you can put him in the class of Kwame and Eddy Curry. He shouldn't have been picked before Melo, Wade, Bosh, etc. and he is a huge bust, but even now, I see what attracted scouts to his game. He is big and athletic and can pass. He is definitely a bust and even then wasn't worth the second pick, but I think he showed enough potential to warrant a lottery pick.

I agree Im Your Father

Darko is a huge bust, and I defitenitely now that looking back at it that he shouldn't have been picked above Wade and Bosh, but I don't blame the Pistons for drafting him. I was watching a replay of the 2003 NBA draft, and Jay Bilas called Darko a FREAK! He was raving about him and he said that Darko would have been the #1 pick in any other draft.

Looking back at it now, Wade & Bosh should have been picked ahead of him, but I can't really blame the Pistons for drafting him because he was such a great prospect.

I agree with Anton123 the

I agree with Anton123 the Thunder/Sonics seem like they were blind folded and then pulled names out of a hat when it came to drafting..Picking guys like Petro & Sene..I think if Swift had went to colllege,he could've been a solid backup..But injuries slowed his career...

But when it comes to drafting, being compared to a player that have been successful or a flop can come into play.. GM's look into those comparisions when its time to select a player.I remember scouts were comparing Joe Alexander to former allstar Tom Chambers another white guy with good athleticism...But Chambers had a much better basketball IQ..

Those folks that said Darko would be another Wilt must've been smoking that good stuff...I use to live in Europe and attended alot of those games and thought Darko could be a solid player maybe top 5..I'm not gonna lie i thought he could be a star..Not a superstar..Becuz he was getting pushed around inside by smaller stronger players on a nightly basis..Alot of us said he wasn't ready for the NBA right then..But watching him play over there ..You would've said he has great upside and that he had NBA potential in a few years..Back in 2003 i thought the top 5 prospects were 1.Lebron 2Melo 3Bosh 4.Wade 5Darko..If i was picking 2nd i'd taken my chances on a proven college player like Bosh,Melo or Wade...

I loved watching Morrison play in college..He seem to play with alot of confidence and even though he was battling an illness he still played hard..I thought he'd be a good 3rd or 4th option on a team, but if he was your best player you're team wouldn't be that good..Morrison reminded me of Nash when he was at Santa Clara..I thought he would struggle his first couple of years then by his 3rd or 4th year he'd be a star...

Jordan Hill will never be a

Jordan Hill will never be a bust.

He has a some good skills for only playing basketball for 5-6 years.
He's very athletic for his size & has improved a lot since playing with the Knicks.
He's going to surprise a few people.
Soft Hands, Strong Finisher, & average defender as of right now.
He's learning some good post moves playing against Defensive Studs like Hayes & Yao. Plus having Sikma, Miller, & Yao to learn from will only help him

Jordan Hill is AWFUL. He is just one of those players you watch and see that he doesn't belong on an NBA court... what a terrible draft pick.

I love the list, just 2 draft classes at PF......

I appreciate the list, but I have to disagree with 2 of the people on your list. Let's just assume for the sake of argument that each team was drafting a "need" instead of a best available. Obviously Atlanta would have been better served drafting rajon rondo in 06' for example. Based on the PF available in 06 there isn't any 1st round worthy picks after Aldridge was selected. Millsap has been a very good player as a sleeper pick, but never seen as a 1st rounder. In the 03 draft with mike sweetney, at the time he had lost about 15 lbs his junior season at Georgetown and played very well in the big east, David West has had an above average career even gained an all star nod once but injuries have taken their toll. And drafting a 1st team all big east big man over an A-10 First teamer seemed like an obvious choice. I didn't mention Nick Collison because he was a lottery choice as well, so couldn't use him as a comparison for overlooked players.

All in all great list, just two weak PF draft classes in 03 and 06 based on players available at the time.

The one redhead OhCanada doesnt invite to the Ginger Convention

I think, based on the circumstances he was drafted under, Robert Swift should be near the top.

He and his dad refused to do any kind of workouts for teams so what they saw in high school all star games would be the last time they could see him play.

The Supersonics had never even spoken to Swift brfore drafting him

Darko is going to destroy

Darko is going to destroy teams this year.

He is averaging 6.6 p 5.1 r 2.4 a 2.0 b per 21.4 mpg this preaseason.

expecting he will get somewhere aroung 36 mpg game at center these would be his stats-

36- 11.1p 8.6r 4a 3.4b

3.4 b a game would easily lead the league

1-Greg Oden (1st overall pick

1-Greg Oden (1st overall pick in 2007 by Portland)---Its been 3 years and at the most he has shown flashes of being a solid backup center. A NBA career plagued by injuries is a understatement this guy has never played more than 61 games in a season and during his 3 seasons hes played a GRAND total of 82 games. Also lets not mention the tremendious talent selected after him..............Kevin Durant, Al Horford, Jeff Green, Joakim Noah, Rodney Stuckey, Aaron Brooks, Carl Landry, Marc Gasol, Ramon Sessions etc...

The Raptors Drafted Rafael

The Raptors Drafted Rafael Over Iggy, Josh Smith, Jr. Smith, Biendrins, and a few other people, off the top of my head based on the players still availible that everybody knew was better that was one of the worse picks. And the Hawks drafting Shelden Williams. They could of atleasted drafted Marcus Williams of Uconn that would of made more sense but not over Roy or Foye who at the time were safe picks.

Good List tho Ike Dig it.

Oden was already hyped up man... It would be shocking news if he didn't go top 2... He has always been described as a "once-in-a-decade" big man... IMO, he's worthy to be in the top 3 picks alone especially the considering how "average" the 2007 draft class is... Unlike the people on my list, he has always been hyped...

a lot of you seem to defend Darko and I see your points... He was an interesting prospect and you can't blame teams for wanting him as early as top 6 or higher... If I were to mention a player that should have been there instead of Darko, it could have been, Luke Jackson... Luke was a spectacular scorer in college and he was a dead-eyed shooter way back but his game never improved when he get into the pros... Him being picked over Al Jefferson, JR Smith and gulp, Josh Smith is crazy but it happened...

If the topic is the top 10

If the topic is the top 10 guys that should have never been drafted as a lottery pick, then why do you have Darko ahead of Sweetney? Same draft, both lottery picks, but Darko could be a starter this season while Sweetney isn't in the league. Your list is actually closer to "Most Underserving of Draft Position". And Darko had as much upside as Kwame and Curry, so they should be in the discussion as well.
