Fresh off a newly signed 4yr, $64 million dollar contract… 22 year old Tobias Harris became the highest paid player for the Orlando Magic. Tobias is a versatile forward who averaged 17.1pts, 6.3rebs, 1.8 assists and 36% from 3pt range (46% overall).

Known as a bit of a ball stopper & and just an average defensive player, Tobias Harris has sorta become the poster boy for data and analytic lovers who value unique offensive production. Only Lebron James, Kevin Durant, Chris Bosh, Kevin Love & Paul Millsap averaged 15pts & 6rebs while shooting over 35% from behind the arc. All of which are 26 years of age or older and have made multiple all-star teams. That’s a pretty interesting statistic.

I’m a believer in Tobias Harris. I think Scott Skiles dials him in defensively, takes another step forward in his 3pt percentage (only 21.5% of his attempts were from the corners!) and he learns to swing the ball more without disrupting the flow of the offense. Excited to see what’s in store for him!

Def a believer, his game is intriguing. I love big forwads that have guard handles. he mixes it up, posts up, steps out, rebounds…

FYI his contract doesnt seem bad at all for the type of player he may become. Especially not bad when compared to some of the worst contractss i have ever seen this summer.

they have very good pieces, i hope orlando does well this season

I didn’t get a chance to watch a lot of Orlando’s games, but the ones I did get to see, I liked what Tobias brought. I saw a game he had against Cleveland, how physical he was against LeBron and how he didn’t back down from the challenge. Skiles will definitely challenge him more and demand toughness on a consistent basis, so I think in the long run, this deal will play out in the Magic’s favor.

I was surprised by the Magic resigning him, because I thought the plan was to start Payton, Oladipo and Hezonja. Now it’s clear that Hezonja will be used as a 6th man, he is certainly better off the bench right now, but with Harris now inked for the next 4 years and Gordon looking like their PF for the future I wonder what the plan is.

As for Tobias himself – I’ve always been shocked at how productive he is. He doesn’t seem to have any one great skill, but at the end of the game he somehow usually ends up with 20+ points. I thought his scoring was a total fluke (I was sure his shots would just stop going in at some point) for almost two years, but now I have to admit I have been wrong.

It will be interesting to see how Orlando does this year and how Skiles uses Tobias, Aaron Gordon and Hezonja.

I like Harris for many of the same reasons listed above, and I asked myself: how many 3s would I rather have than Tobias Harris, for sure? (some are debatable)

    1. LeBron James

    2. Kevin Durant

    3. Carmelo Anthony

    4. Paul George

    5. Kawhi Leonard

    6. Andrew Wiggins

    7. Gordon Hayward

    8. Chandler Parsons

That’s about it. Rudy Gay scores more but does less in general. Draymond Green can’t really handle it or pass like Tobias Harris. Jabari Parker probably will end up on the list, but we don’t know yet. At this stage in their careers, I wouldn’t take Paul Pierce or Joe Johnson over Tobias Harris. Danilo Gallinari, Nic Batum, Wilson Chandler, Jeff Green, Luol Deng, Thaddeus Young? No, thanks, nor DeMarre Carroll or Trevor Ariza.

It’s close with Greek Freak. He almost became No. 9, but Harris is still more refined.

Mario Hezonja or Stanley Johnson, possibly, but not yet.

I’m a believer, and remember back in the day when I dubbed him Melo-lite, and a ton of posters on here gave me grief for it. I stand by that statement, and I think collectively as a group we’ve come to accept this comparison for Tobias Harris. He will never be on Melo’s level of skill, but he has the exact same size (literally, it’s actually kind of scary how similar their measurements are), and he plays the EXACT same way.

Tobias is a great 2nd or 3rd option on a good team in my opinion because he can work the midrange, shoot the 3, post up, and most importantly, he can create his own shot. People seem to hate iso players in this new and improved passing league, but I think iso players are still solid to have on a team. When your offense goes cold, iso that player and hope they can score some points. Tobias can give you that, and in the right system/team I think he could become a fantastic player.

I wouldn’t be surprised to see him put up 22/7/2 on near 48/38/75 in his prime, and for that he is a keeper. He’s only 22 years old, and still has a lot to work on, but he’s so far ahead of the curve at this point you have to be a believer. I also like what ORL is doing, and the players he is surrounded by (Except Gordon, he seems like a goof ball to me). Hezonja, Payton, and especially Dipo are all highly competative guys who go out there and bring it every night, so Harris is going to be put in a position where he has to play urgently and focused every game. I expect the Magic to be fighting for the playoffs sooner rather than later.

And Tobias seems to be a little further along with his 3pt shooting than Carmelo was at the same point in their careers (both in volume and percentage). I think we can all agree that Tobias will be a notch or two below Carmelo when it comes ppg, but to me Tobias seems like he can be molded into a team player slightly more than a young, entering-his-prime Melo.

Believer since before he signed a letter of intent to Tennessee. Has great versatility and skill for his size but one thing nobody talks about is his leadership skills and how vocal he is. Truly the heart and soul of this Magic team and I think they are ready for a playoff run or at least to compete for a spot.
