The Minnesota Timberwolves are trying hard to land Pau Gasol.
If they have to part with the highest draft choice in franchise history after just one season, the Wolves appear ready to do it.
That much became clear leading up to the NBA draft on Thursday, when Minnesota offered Derrick Williams in hopes of landing the second pick from the Charlotte Bobcats to help get Gasol from the Los Angeles Lakers, two people with knowledge of the discussions told The Associated Press.
I do not understand why we are so set on trying to get Pau. Derrick Williams is reportely working his a$$ off at trying to become a small forward and is already down to 233 pounds. The only reason he is on the trading block is because we have a log jam at PF, so we try to trade him for another PF? Pau can also play center, but we have a young up and coming center in Nikola Pekovic who is a total beast. He averaged 14 and 7 last year in limited minutes and was never truly healthy all year. He is arguably the strongest player in the NBA and will only get better. Pekovic is not the best defender and we need a good low post guy to protect the rim, but Pau doesnt really do that. O yeah he is also aging and making 18 million dollars.
We desperatly need some vets on the team, but we need SG's and SF's not another PF or Center.
I think its more about the NBA's new obsession with star power driven teams. Having Love and Rubio and Gasol gives us our own "Big 3" that we could compete with. Even when we're working through the draft to be better contenders.
Will be good at center all year long.
Twolves fan.. I am fed up with Kahn.. Since he came here he inherited a lot of first round picks. He has selected:
Flynn and Johnson were busts. Babbitt was traded for Martell Webster. Hayward and Ellington are what they are. Rubio has played for a half season in Minny.. Although he has huge potential. The most productive player, Lawson, never played a minute for the Twolves. They also traded away Norris Cole last year. Now they want to give up on DWill for a 32 year old that will not give them a chance to ever win a title. I wish they would give him a chance. Derrick Williams, Kevin Love Ricky Rubio, and Pek could be a nice young core to build around. We have a lot of cap room and hope we find players to build around the mentioned 4.
Yeah I definitely agree with you. It doesn't make much sense to add Gasol with Love and Pekovic developing nicely.
If the Wolves want to move Derrick Williams they can definitely do it and likely get a good small forward prosepct and maybe even a two guard as well. They may have to include someone else for salaries to match. A team they should be calling is the 76ers who are laden with SFs.
Wayne Brady is gonna have to choke a b!t(#.
Dwill still has value right now, but he doesn't have the ability to play the 3. I highly doubt one summer and 20 pounds is really going to turn him into a SF worthy of a #2 pick. He was drafted so high because of his potential to be such a mismatch at the 4. He isn't going to succeed with Love playing the 4, and another year playing limited minutes in a bad role is only going to kill his value more. Same thing happened with Wes Johnson. That guy isn't worth a late first rounder anymore. Kahn doesn't want to see that happen with Williams. Trade him now while he's still young.
Pau isn't the answer though. They need a SG so bad.
I disagree. Williams wasn't even that bad when he played the wing last year. He'll have to improve defensively but offensively he showed he can play the 3, he just needs to be more consistent.
Well one summer might not totally turn him into a 3, but it is a good start.
Also, do you think them trying to get Pau Gasol has something to do with Rubio? If they can get Pau Gasol to play here in MN, maybe that means that other players (especially with a spanish background) would be more inclined to come to MN to play for the Wolves?
I would hate to see this trade go down honestly because how the Wolves have been going, they have followed the Thunder Model although with fewer super successful picks. I like the team attitude and demeanor, they really just need to mature some more together.
I know that Pau and Ricky are good friends, but i dont know how much that matters to Khan. Ricky seems to really enjoy it here and doesnt need Pau here to be happy.
if they trade for Gasol i think afterwards they could trade Nikola Pekovic and get quite good SG for him as he has hige value at this point...
