Because Perkins' knees could be problems going forward and the Thunder don't want to hurt their current financial flexibility.

Kendrick Perkins' contract extension with Oklahoma City pays him $34.8 million over four years, league source tells Y! Sports.
Boston offered him 4yr/30mil
Perkins wanted 4yr / 35-40mil
I don't think they're THAT much of an issue.
I mean the guy averaged about 75 games a season in last 4 seasons prior to 2010-2011.
Kendrick said he wanted to go to OKC for 2 years now, maybe it's about more than just money
Might not have gotten more in free agency with the new CBA
I think Boston had offered him 22 million over 4 years. Some reports had said 30 million but Perk himself said it was closer to 22 mill. That's far less than what OKC gave him in the end.
Some reports said it was 4-30mil from the celtics but it was 4years 22million. He signed a 4year 32million with bonuses from the thunder. Big difference for him.
