Was watching NBATV last night, and they decided to answer a viewer email. The email asked "do you think lebron james could make it in the 80's or would he bee too much of a wuss?". First off im dissapointed that a respected tv show would take the time to even give that email the time of day. It is clearly just meant as a diss at lebron.
Secondly, i was disspaointed in mchales answer. He innitaillydismissed the idea that lebron couldnt make it back then citing that lebron is one of the strongest wings this game has seen and thus would have no problem fitting into the more physical style of play. But instead of leaving it there. he decided to take a shot at aaron brooks of all people saying that he would struggle to make it back then becasue he was too small and he wouldnt be able to handle the physical play. Regardless of how he feels, i think he should show todays players the same respect he would like them to show him and i didnt see any reason for him to pick on aaron brooks completley out of nowhere. Its like the old man who always says "back in my day" before discussin how things were so much better back then.
And if guys like nate "tiny" archibald (6-1 160) can make 3 all-star teams in the 80's and succeed, or an isiah thomas (6-1 185) can be one of the best players of the decade, i dont see why aaron couldnt get it done. A man with his speed and 3 point shooting abilities is gonna cause just as many fits as he is gonna get picked on for his lack of size. Unless you think multiple time all-stars like mark price were just on a whole nother level physically.
Anyways, my point wasnt to make this a todays players vs 80's players topic, i just thought kevin mchale was in poor taste calling out one of todays players like that and i wanted to stick up for brooks and the little guys.
well i dunno why hes talkin, an unathletic guy like mchale would be horrible in todays league
nbatv made a horrible desicion hiring mchale, he seems like a nice guy and everything but he has to be the most boring person alive, sometimes says the stupidest thing too. lj would dominate in any era imo
Anyone is better than Eric Snow
What gets me is i'm sure that they get 1000's of E-Mails a day from fans..Why did they pick 1 like that, to answer?
I think Kevin McHale would be able to play today. He's one of the most skilled big men to ever play the game. And I think NBATV made a great decision hiring him. He's great and can bring insight about the game that most people can't bring. I don't think he's boring at all lol.
I do agree that this was in poor taste though. He'd probably do this over again if he could.
And McHale has tremendous respect for the players in today's game. He's not a bitter old guy. Since he's been on the show, this is probably the first off comment he's made. I've heard a lot worse. Gary Payton used to dog Rajon Rondo out every chance he got. I mean, he had zero respect for Rondo's game. Cherryl Miller calls guys out directly.
Yeah, McHale and Olajuwon had the best post moves out of all the players i've ever seen....
mchale is very insightful...but he should not have used brooks as an example...to answer a pointless email...
Yea... He'd do that over again if he could. I'm sure NBATV would do it over altogether and just skip that e-mail.
It's not THAT big of a deal though. Nothing that made me upset.
