valentineSo it looks like Thon Maker is going to stay in High School for another season.
I actually think it’s a good move. He’s not developed physically to play against College players, and his body doesn’t lend itself to gaining strength quickly.
I saw him compete hard against Skal Labissiere, but inevidibly their matchup had Skal ranked a top-2 Prospect and Maker teetering on the edge of the first round.
Therefore his draft stock has never been lower, and going into College and banging with guys 30lbs heavier would leave him risking injury without likely improving his stock. (And to those that don’t believe in "improving stock"…..just remember that stock = money…and lots of it.)
For what it’s worth, I don’t believe the noise about his age. He doesn’t exactly look like Greg Oden and he’s as skinny as a kid his age naturally would be.
I still think he has a huge ceiling, he just needs to work on his game a year or 2 longer than other people his same age.

BallerScriptParticipantI think this is a good move. I watched him play in the hoop summit and he looked lost and clumsy out there compared to players like Diallo and Labissiere.

wonzi_bellsParticipantIf he wants, he could just enter the draft next year still without college if he goes to a prep school. Anyways, good thing that he isn’t rushing everything like he was trying to do earlier this year.

BiggysmallsParticipantHow much does he actually weigh? Is he a legit 7’0 200 pounds? Or does he weigh less than that?
This just seems like a case of a young kid that simply needs to grow into his body. Big guys are clumsy when they are younger because they just aren’t used to being that big. And thats perfectly ok. Dude will probably be a top 20 pick, but he needs to get bigger.

Rip255He’s around 220 and is legitimately 7’0" without shoes. For comparisons sake, hes got the same height and wingspan as KAT, but 30lbs lighter than he was at the same event 12 months earlier.
That’s actually heavier than Nerlens Noel and Anthony Davis at the same stage…
So whilst his weight is an issue…the Hoops Summit showed that he’s just not fluid in his body yet. He can run and jump as good as any 7footer in the NBA, but has poor body control which I believe is just him growing into his height.
He drops passes, loses balance easily, dribbles the ball off his foot and in general his arms and limbs aren’t in sync’d with his mind.
He’s 18 years, 4mths old. I wouldn’t excpect anything resembling decent levels of NCAA production until he’s 20.

IlladelphParticipantIt seemed like his guardian was pushing him to reclassify. I suspect that his grades/academics are what is driving the decision to stay in school. The earliest that he would have been able to play in college was the second semester anyway. I’m not sure how coming off the bench for half a season at Arizona State would have tremendously improved his draftability. I think that the best decision has always been for him to finish high school, and focus on imporving his game and get his academics in order.
