Theres a new Thon Maker mixtape doing the rounds.

After watching it, try telling me this guy isn’t the best prospect in the 2017 draft.

Even if you disagree with that previous statement, he at least owns the title of mix-tape king.

All I can see is KG mixed with Durant.

He’s probably talking about the "Thon Maker is a VIDEO GAME" video.

I think he is the #1 player in that class, and find a bit hilarious that some people would rank him as low as 9th from what I have seen.

I’m glad he didn’t declare for this year, just because there’d be too much talent at the top.

Thon Maker is a great mixtape guy cause of his size. He’s got somewhat of a handle but there is no way he plays the 3 in the league. He’ll be a 4 in todays nba. If he can improve his jumper  and show the ability to be a real rim protector (everything about his physical profile indicates he should be but his instincts aren’t the best) then he will be a legit possibilitty for #1 in the 2017 draft. Providing he isn’t 23 years old or something.

As an actual NBA prospect I would have Thon Maker slated at #8 in the 2017 class.

      1. Harry Giles

      2. De’Aaron Fox

      3. Jayson Tatum

      4. Dennis Smith Jr.

      5. Josh Jackson

      6. Jonathan Isacc

      7. Malik Monk

      8. Thon Maker

Obviously it’s early. Can’t wait to see what they do in College.

Great player, will be a real NBA contributor, but keep in mind hes waaaay older than he is saying (known to many of us in Western Australia that know the family). But hey, when you are from somewhere with virtually nothing substantial to prove your age, you use the paperwork you have. Mutombo still had a great career, waving his elderly finger around.

Man I dunno about that. Is he a year older? 2 years older? Eh..maybe 6-12 mths

How do we know he isnt 6 mths younger if he doesnt know his true age.

I see how skinny he was when he was like 15…and how much muscle hes jacked on now that hes say 18…and it seems like a pretty normal weight gain curve. Dude actually isnt skinny anymore.

One thing I do know is that the guy belongs on an NCAA court. Wouldnt dominate…but still be good. I think he wants to do it with his lil brother tho…

This kid is quite tall and long! If he wasn’t a basketball player he would be great in a warehouse where they have high shelves for storage. I sure as heck would like a friend like that when I’m in the grocery store!

I’ve been maintaining for about a year now that by Thon Maker’s fourth or fifth year in the NBA, he’ll be an Andrea Bargnani on offense and a Theo Ratliff on defense.

I think Thon Maker will be drafted in the lottery, and I do think some people are underrating him. He is a stretch 4 in today’s NBA if his shot and handle are as legit as they look. He’s almost the same prospect as Kristaps Porzingis, just slightly smaller. Thon is a legit 7’0",  220 pounds at "18 (19? 20?) with a 7’3 wingpsn, some good athleticism and fluidity. Kristaps was 7’1" to 7’3" 220 pounds when drafted at 20 years old. Kristaps just had a little more mystery. But they are fairly similar. Someone will fall in love with his workout.

I have seen him play multiple times in person since he was 13 years old. He has NO hands, drops everything and has tons of trouble playing within himself. He looks great in mixtapes, and that is what they are for, but everytime I have seen him against other top tier high school players (pangos, nations, etc.) he has looked like a middle of the pack player. No effort, little ability to finish. Just what I have seen in person. Hope he proves me wrong.

Thon is highly overrated. He’s not quick enough, agile enough or skilled enough to play on the perimeter and he’s not strong enough to play down on the box consistently. He has small hands and doesn’t catch anything clean and is not the most fluid athlete. He’s a ixtape phenom and that’s about it. For example, everybody likes to talk about the move he put on Edrice Adebayo in Vegas but if you were at the game you would have seen that he didn nothing else besides that. He will do something once in a game that will be allow someone to put a mixtape together but he never does any of that in a game for the entire 32 minutes. Good player but not special as some people try to make him out to be and a number of NBA people feel the same way

I wasnt at the game where he broke adebayo’s ankles but I saw the entire game and to say that he didnt do anything else is straight BS. Im pretty sure they were running the offense thru him the entire game. I have seen all full games of him on youtube and he always contributes, and not just minimally, for the most part hes always the most dominant player on the court or putting on a battle with another top recruit.

Find the box score man and tell me what his numbers were. I’ll save you the trouble. He had 9 points and was somewhere in the neigborhood of 2-12 from the floor or something like that man. Like I said he did nothing

Saw him last night, he was not playing, has an ankle he is nursing right now. He will be playing with the "Athlete Institute" post grad team and not the "Orangeville Prep" team this year. I think he is going to be playing on the ball a lot, which is something that personally drives me crazy when I see it. His handle is great for his size, but he struggles with pressure and he seems to always keep it tight even when he should be pushing the ball forward, which tends to end up with him bringing it down and either getting it stripped or turning it over. He draws fouls in transition as well, it just will keep happening less each level he climbs.

Like Ian says, I cannot see him guarding on playing on the perimeter, he is not that fluid laterally and while he can shoot, he is not Kevin Durant as far as that is concerned. He also really does struggle getting post position and he gets knocked off balance quite often. He still has a lot of things he needs to work on physically and I am really not crazy about him staying out on the perimeter, which is what has happened since he has been in Canada. He is going to have to do it with the team he is currently playing with, which I am not sure does him any favors for his transition to (hopefully) college.

He is a smart, engaging dude and I think he is coachable, which gives him potential to develop beyond what he is right now. He certainly has legitimate size to be a match-up problem and he runs the floor well. If he would kick to the guard rather than trying to play it himself, think that would make him much more dangerous in transition. There is no doubt he does make a difference and has tools to work with, but having seen him quite a bit, I do believe there are better players in his class and things to be concerned with moving forward. As much as it seems like he is lottery bound, there is work to do and things to prove before that is an inevitability. Similar to just about every prospect, though I feel there are some other players in 2016 who seem to be more translatable to the NBA down the line.

I like Thon but have to agree with Mikey and Ian. Some of you are referencing a mixtape to call him the best, but the guy who makes the video, Cityleaguehoopstv, doesn’t even think Thon is the best of the class.
