Since the Josh Smith trade last week, I think Terrence Jones officially needs a change of scenery. They have such a log-jam at the PF spot, with Capela/D-Mo/Smith/Harrell. Even Trevor Ariza has been playing a bit of small ball 4 lately, further squeezing Terrence Jones from the rotation. This has just been a lost year for him in his age 24 season.

I think Jones can be had for cheap. And although he has dealt with a myriad of injuries, I think it’s worth the risk for the Wizards to explore a move for him. When healthy & on his game, this guy can be pretty dynamic while running the floor, blocking shots both man-to-man & the weak side, shooting from 3, and even mixing in some nice post moves. A Wall-Beal-Porter-Jones-Gortat starting 5 is interesting to me.

Some context to his talent: In February & March of last season (2014-15) Jones was healthy, the Rockets were winning, and he was putting up excellent numbers as their starting PF. They had an 18-9 record during that time, and he was averaging 16pts, 8.8rebs, 2.0blks, 55% fg. Those are above average PF numbers for a guy who was only 23 years old.

If you were the wizards though.. do you give up an existing asset or a future pick? That’s tricky.. but I think Washington should look into both scenarios. If they feel that the pick they would have to give up is in the early 20’s, he could provide a good return on that investment. But his health is a legitimate deterrent. What do you all think?

A team like Cleveland could use him. I’d honestly figure out a way to get rid of Kevin Love, and then make a trade with Terrence Jones for like… JR Smith or something. Gives the Rockets a decent backup SG and then the Cavs get a PF that doesn’t need the ball a lot. It will give Lebron the ball more which is what the Cavs want.

So they would give Kevin Love to a place like Boston or something. And then get Terrence Jones. They get rid of JR and this Cavs team looks really good again.

One of the things I like about Jones’ game is that he can be productive as either a high usage or low usage player. On a stacked team like Cleveland he can be a guy who plays good D, hits the offensive glass, and makes an open shot or extra pass. All without demanding too many touches.

But for a team like Washington though, he would be asked to do more. They have a glaring need at PF, and I think he would rise to the occassion as he’s proven to be an above average PF for an uptempto team that was winning.. as a 23 year old. Having a ‘table setter’ the caliber of John Wall could also open up his offensive game even more on deep post ups, cuts, lobs, pick & pop and pick and rolls. That’s what intrigues me most.

I still like your suggestion though, and that seems consistent with the type of mid-season moves GM David Griffen has made in the past for disgruntled or mis-cast players (i.e Shumpert, J.R & Mozzy)

Send him over to Portland. He would fit in well. Defense, shooting, rebounding. And he is from Portland, OR. And we have a variety of assets we would be willing to give up for him. Simple, easy, no mess.

Portland already has a young player in Noah vonleh who projects as a similar player to Jones. Plus he would still be contending with plumlee, Leonard and Davis for mins as well. Not sure if Portland would be the best fit for Jones.

The wizards make a lot of sense. He would fit in really well with them. His contract is up, so they could try to sign a top free agent then sign him and beal. A core of wall, beal, porter, jones and a free agent along with gortat. Kevin durant, probably not but even a middle tier free agent or throwing a max at someone like barnes or really anyone else. That would be a solid core of six players with a solid window to do contend and hope something happens or porter or jones make the jump to borderline all star or all star.

I think he’s high reward with a lower asking price.  The kind of guy you need to roll the dice on. Washington would be a good spot. He would also look great next to karl anthony towns too.
