Hey guys, I was just reading this link on Thon Maker and was hoping someone could clear this up for me. It said he got a tech foul before the game even started for dunking in the warm up?? O.o . I have never heard of this rule, pretty sure we dont have it over here so Im just wondering if this is an american thing or what this rule is exactly? Cheers.

    High school basketball

I remember when I was a high school sophomore, a senior on the varsity team dunked during layup drills and got a tech.  The opposing team got a free-throw before the tip-off.

I don’t know if it’s a nationwide rule or if only certain states have it.  I know California has it though.

I’m pretty sure college basketball has the same rule.

Not sure about other states, but I know that is a rule in Indiana. Usually officials will give you a break if you forget once during warm-ups. Occasionally though, you’ll get that one ref who is strictly by the book, tries to do everything possible to make himself look good, and will call it immediately (especially if it’s the visiting team).

Just like said above, always that ref that tries to make themselves look good and calls everything exactly by the book. Happens here in Canada too.

One game I was playing in the semi finals, and after our game the grade 9 and 10 team was playing as well. After we won our game, one of our seniors dunked, so the ref instantly gave him a tech. Shouldn’t matter because our game was won but he gave a tech to the team playing AFTER us from our school. The team they were playing got two free throws to start the game and made them both. Our school ended up losing by 2.

Our school was not impressed lol.

I’ve heard of the rule it applies here in New York as well. Only time the rule does not apply is during showcase events when out of town teams come in to NYC and play.  I honestly don’t like the rule one bit.

I remember back when I played in high school, I hated this rule so much.  I was one of those kids that just barely couldn’t dunk normally.  However, before games in the layup line I would have so much adrenaline going, I would be able to jump a little bit higher.  I remember dropping balls down into the hoop.  I’ve always thought that this rule prevented me from throwing down my first few dunks lol

I’m pretty sure the rule is in every state, I play in the DFW in a district full of guys that can dunk. So the refs are pretty cool about it and give us like 6 minutes of warm ups to dunk then come into the gym and blow there whistles to let us know they are there.
