Junior Greek BallerParticipantAmericans often laugh at Darko and Bargnani saying what a bust each of them are. But shouldn’t the real blame be put on the American scouts who actually drafted them ? Shouldn’t the jokes be made about the scouts and not the players ?
After all it is not the player’s fault where he gets picked in the draft.

trelos6ParticipantDarko was put in a position to fail.
He had the potential to be a good player, but the Pistons who were a championship didn’t develop him and he lost his skill.

chall23ParticipantI think Darko lost confidence and motivation rather than skill, you can have all the skill in the world but if you are not confident in your ability you aren’t going to play well.

McDunkinLarry Brown as great of a coach as he might be…killed Darkos confidence.

MattP31ParticipantLB is especially difficult for young players. I’m a little nervous for Mudiay this year, especially after last year’s McDonald’s All American(Keith Frazier) didn’t get utilized to reach his full potential as a freshman and posted pretty disappointing numbers in a league that was extremely weak in the whole bottom half

frogmanParticipantWhy does everyone think Bargnani was such a bust? If you don’t include Brandon Roy who was ruined with injuries the only player taken in the top 20 that is better than Bargnani is Lamarcus Aldridge. You might not like him but he was one of the most talented players in the draft and has been a 21PPG scorer.

MattP31ParticipantI’d also put Rudy Gay over Bargnani. I get what you are saying about him compared to the rest of that year’s draft but at the same time his play for a #1 overall pick are extremely disappointing. He got some hype for being the top pick and certainly hasn’t played at that level. So to say he’s a bust does need to be put into context

Jester87ParticipantScouts play a small role, they make reports, then the GMs make the decision, but sometimes they do that basing on what coaches and owners ask them. It depends, but it’s never easy to say who is responsible for a pick. Now we read basically everywhere that Chris Grant wanted to draft Nerlens Noel, but Dan Gilbert wanted to make the playoffs and didn’t want to use the first overall pick on a player who would’ve not play for the entire rookie season.
Also, what scouts do is to evaluate players’ strengths and weaknesses, how good they are and how good they will be. Potential plays a big role. But scouts can’t really evaluate work ethic and other things that play a big role in a player’s development. Also, teams, coaches are really important.
Milicic had potential, maybe he was overrated, but he was still a very good prospect. Larry Brown didn’t like him (I remember by that time, a journalist here in Italy reported that he had talked with Larry Brown’s brother and assistant Herb, asking him if Larry Brown was going to make Milicic’s pick look bad. The answer was "Larry doesn’t give a 4letterword), some times he totally humiliated Darko. And Brown, while he’s a great coach, can become a nightmare for players he doesn’t like (ask Jalen Rose, or Melo). Obviously Milicic didn’t do anything to help himself, he wasn’t mature enough, he was just 18 years old, he developed a bad attitude and was uncomfortable in a completely different culture. He probably never worked enough to improve his game and to get his way out of Brown’s doghouse.
But you can’t predict those things so you can’t put all the blame on scouts for every busts. It’s on the scouts when they underrate or overrate a player, but often the prospects actually have talent, they just don’t develop the way they should for many reasons.
