Stiemsma, Wolves agree to deal

Restricted free agent center Greg Stiemsma has reached an agreement with the Minnesota Timberwolves, according to his agent.

Terms were not disclosed, but the Boston Celtics own only the biannual exception ($1.975 million) to match.

The Timberwolves' offer was expected to trump that, meaning Stiemsma is almost certainly bound for Minnesota.

Stiemsma received consistent interest from the Timberwolves this summer, meeting with them near the start of free agency and waiting patiently as they sorted out their own cap issues while pursuing front-line players.

The Celtics would have three days to match an offer sheet, or they could simply rescind their $1.1 million qualifying offer to allow Stiemsma to sign as an unrestricted free agent.

Stiemsma, a Wisconsin native, heads closer to home with a chance to play again for the team that gave him his first NBA opportunity.

Stiemsma signed with the Timberwolves at the end of the 2009-10 season, but was waived before appearing in a game.

After stints in South Korea, Turkey and the NBA Development League, he landed in Boston after the lockout and earned a roster spot. By the end of an injury-decimated 2011-12 season, he was Boston's first big off the bench.

Stiemsma averaged 2.9 points, 3.2 rebounds and 1.5 blocks over 55 games with the Celtics.

It's for the best

Eh, that's ok, there wouldn't be as many minutes for him anyway.

He be sandwiched somewhere between KG, Bass, Wilcox, Sully, and Melo, fighting for PT. At least he goes somewhere he can show off his talents, great complement to Pekovic and Love.

Great for Minny

They need more shot blocking and they got a shot blocker on the cheap.

Need more

The wolves need more than Stiemsma after losing out on Batum, Lee and Hill. They landed Roy but have to be cautious with his minutes and that means Wes Johnson is going to be relied on again which makes me nervous. I would like to see them go after Rush but I assume that GW would match his offer too.

someone can explain me? how

someone can explain me? how that occur? i'm talking about Stiemsma being Invisible and nonexisting in college, almost not playing and not producing at all as a college player(in senior year only 11mpg) and now become legitimate NBA player!!

2 things

extremely late bloomer and in NBA size is more imortant then skill. College is all about skill and size is secondary.

NBA if your 7-0 someone will find time for you if you can do one thing at a decent rate.

T Wolves

T Wolves are by far the whitest team in the league. K Love, Rubio, Pekovic, Luke Ridnour, Jose Barea, and now they add Hummel, Budinger and Steimsma. lol

I love this pickup for the wolves. With only Pekovic, Love, Tolliver (plays hard, but not a fan) and Williams their only legit frontcourt players and Williams looking like he's trying to switch to SF they were looking awful thin...

great pickup

great pickup for the wolves, they need a nice backup power forward (maybe resign Tolliver?) and they could be set for the season. I think they should start a line up of Rubio Budinger (Roy if he's legitimately back to full health, or even close), Williams, and of course Love and Pekovic. They have a ton of depth with Roy, Barrea, Ridnour, Johnson, and Stiemsma off the bench, plus maybe Shved can bring something to the table.

As for the Celtics, I'm wondering if they're gonna start KG at the 4 and Wilcox at the 5, or Bass at the 4 and KG at the 5? Eitherway KG is gonna get some minutes at the 5. I think the better Sullinger is, the more minutes for KG at the 5, so maybe they transition over the course of the year as Sullinger improves. I'm not banking on Fab Melo playing much this year.

I like it too, he's a great

I like it too, he's a great volume shot blocker and surprisingly he can knock down a jump shot. The key is that they didn't over pay him. So often big guys are thrown way too much cash making a good team pickup a bad value pickup.

So instead of paying $5.3

So instead of paying $5.3 million to Darko to be their backup center, they are paying Darko $5.3 million to go away and then another $3 million to Greg Stiemsma to be Darko minus the reputation or flashes of potential but plus a nasty bout of plantar fasciitis.

Bad NBA GMs and their wonderful ideas.
