GlenTaylorSucksParticipant$2.5 million dollar fine, and a lifetime ban. I like the latter; I think the former is basically like being given a parking ticket.
I can’t wait to see what Sterling’s legal defense is gonna be like…this is gonna get UGLY. That all said, Sterling is a straight-up scumbag and doesn’t deserve to own a basketball team.

delfamParticipantI don’t get how he can get punished, it’s not illegal to be a racist and isn’t he allowed to have his own personal views?
I don’t agree with what he said but it was in a personal conversation that he shouldn’t get punished for. I never liked the guy but would this have been any different if he said this about Jewish people or females?

BothTeamsPlayedHardParticipantBeing a racist also is not a protected class or status where no harm can ever befall him for expressing himself. This also is not a case where the government is rounding up all the racists. This is a private league saying that this guy does not and cannot represent them. Silver, at very least the majority of owners, players, coaches, employees, and various business partners do not want those views associated with them.

Junior Greek BallerParticipantGreece is much too high a reward value for him. Something very low in value like Detroit Michigan where 82.7% of the total population are African American.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_U.S._cities_with_large_African-American_populations
Its also no coincidence that this area is also one of the highest rates of unemployment in USA!!!
Leave Sterling alone, everyone is allowed an opinion. Stern has been racist towards Greeks for years now and gotten away with it. I wish some had a hidden recorder on Stern when Antetokounmpo was trying to declare for the draft.

LitteringAnd…ParticipantThe NBA is not the USA it is a private association, so your point is moot. Anyway, the first ammendment doesn’t protect you from the consquences of your free speech. Here’s a perfect explanation of it – http://www.xkcd.com/1537/.
I’m always baffled by the way a lot (not saying the majority) of Americans cite the first ammendment as some sort of get out of jail free card.

RUDEBOY_ParticipantSilver had been Salivating to make his mark by doing something he’s been talking about re -doing the draft and the age limit for players..I doubt he never he had to make a decision this monumental….
Giving Sterling a Lifetime Ban eases the pain for alot of people..But what about the other wealthy people that own businesses that havent been caught, but feel the same way he does? This should be a teachable moment for those people to look deep within themselves and make a change….

Anton123ParticipantIs there a law that says that owners of basketball teams have to have high moral values? They’re all rich people, I’ve always thought many rich people are quite unpleasant.
I really don’t understand the situation, from a legal stand point he’s the one who should be suing people for listening to his conversations.
I agree that being a bigot is wrong, but if the league does this, does this mean that it can just ban whoever it wants from buying teams and fining anyone too?
I mean, by that logic you can ban JR Smith becuse there’s a photo of him with a blunt somewhere.

tongue23outParticipantAs said above, you cannot create a hostile work environment for your employees, which is exactly what Sterling did. Legally, anyone can be terminated for creating a hostile work environment and even moreso for discrimination. Read what BTPH said, he hit the nail on the head as well. JR Smith isn’t creating a league-wide hostile work environment by taking a picture with a blunt.

Sam_HinkieParticipantThe Clippers are a franchise of the NBA.
If an owner of a franchise does or says something that harms the league as a whole, then the comissioner/owners have the right to ban/remove that owner.
Think of it like this…If I buy a McDonalds franchise, I have to follow the rules that the company sets forth. If I decide to change the menu, buying cheaper ingredients (if that’s possible), or come about publicly as discriminating any group of people, then McDonalds would have the right to make you sell the franchise.
The interesting part is that even though sterling is banned for life, he still owns the team. He still will get all of the money made by the team (about 1 mil per playoff game I think). According to the NBA laws, I think 3/4 of the owners have to vote against Sterling for him to be forced to sell the team. Pretty crazy that you can be banned for life and still own the team.

Moon RiverParticipantDid an excellent job of getting the rest of the owners on board in a relatively short period of time. Mark Cuban was bringing up the Constitution and free speech argument a couple of days ago. Today he tweeted that he supports this decision 100%.
This had to be done for the league to survive.
Put a lid on it Larry Johnson. Your suggestion only drags this issue further into areas we don’t need to go to.

GlenTaylorSucksParticipantIs that if he’s forced to sell the team, he’ll pocket the profits for the sale. He bought the team for $12 million, and the team was recently estimated to be in the $800 million value range. Totally unfair that he’ll be making this kind of money based off the outrageous stuff he’s pulled over the years.

HitsterParticipantAdam Silver has gone up hugely in my opinion, being new to the job and taking on a long serving owner, he has made a strong stance and shown he will not tolerate offensive behaviour. Adam has no doubt got the players onside now which is an excellent thing to do early in his role. The owners will almost certainly be pressurised to back him and force Sterling out of the NBA.
My only query would be, if it had been a powerhouse franchise would Adam have been able to try and push the sale mandate through. But he has acted quickly and effectively which is surely what the players, media and fans wanted.
Don’t forget Adam is only 3 months in the job, it wasn’t like the vastly experienced David Stern being able to throw the book at Sterling and then stepping down shortly after. Adam is probably going to be in the job for a decade or more and it looks like he means business which is good for the NBA.

Until he cries poverty and locks the players out.
If it made more financial sense to give Sterling a slap on the wrist, Silver would be talking about freedom of speech and saying his hands were tied.
