Intersting guy in this draft. I think floor is Alonzo Gee and celing is Ron Artest. Likely to end up in between maybe Jae Crowder? I am probably a bit pessimestic but I don’t see the Kawhi comparison this site has.

Thoughts on him? Overrated or underrated?

Ron Artest is a solid comp, I see a little Kawai in him but considering that Kawai is probably a top 10 player before his second contract, I doubt he’s that caliber of a player. I think overall at best he’ll be like the 3rd best player on a title contender, but I think he’s going to be a solid, steady pro.

I actually see a lot of Xavier Henry in Devin Booker. Both were one and dones who played for stacked college teams and posted similar stats. Both could shoot and were decent athletes. But lacked in other parts of the game. I’m not the biggest Booker fan but should have a long career because of his elite shooting.

I think it’s going to come down to his situation – I think he could be a Jimmy Butler, Kawhi Leonard type of player in a few years, but he could also stall out as a solid guy who isn’t great at anything. Maybe the level Harrison Barnes is at right now – although I think Barnes is going to get a lot better.

If he’s given minutes and plays in a system where he isn’t forced to create his own shot – like Leonard and Barnes have been given I think he could develop into a nice player.

Artest isn’t a bad comparison, but it’s not a complete one. Stanley is not as physical (who is?) as Artest. He plays very hard and works very hard, but Artest is next-level intense. On the other side of the coin, I think Stanley could be a much better creator. His handles range from a little sloppy to outstanding, depending on the play. He is already a better ball-handler than Artest was. On the flip side again: Artest was a better shooter. I’m worried about the flat, straight from the forehead shot (despite the nice percentage).

Before the season I thought he could get picked 2nd. No way now. His season was disappointing on the offensive side. I’m worried about his being satisfied blending in. He never took control for Arizona. When  he tried to things got awkward, rushed, and forced. I thought another year could’ve been monumental for his development, but still get him drafted in about the same spot. I assume he goes 5-8. No way he goes after 8 and the only way he goes 4th (doubt it) is if someone drafts for position.

I can’t picture any world where he would be picked 4th. Even with franchises selecting by position he would be after Winslow and Hezonja. And 3 of the worst records have a star player at wing with Wiggins, Melo and Kobe…

8 seem like the right spot for him but I can see him in the late lottery if teams decide to draft bigs like WCS or Kaminsky early.

You seem to be underestimating Hezonja and hyped european prospects. Besides great size and shooting form, Hezonja has a lot of hype in Europe and history has shown that hyped european are always successfull.

I’d compare his Arizona mate RHJ to Alonzo Gee. Stanley Johnson already has better handles than Gee. I think he has the potential to be one of those wing players who’ll improve very fast. He’s got the intangibles,he’s not overly bad at anything,so his upside is there.

I’m going to dig a little deeper, and compare him to Nick Anderson. He has experience being the best player on really good teams, so to me personally that pre-qualifies his potential as being more than that of a role player.

For those unfamiliar, don’t scoff at Nick Anderson. He was a third best player on a championship caliber team in the early to mid 90s for the Magic. A dogged defender, with good range and consummate professional. His first seven years in the league, he averaged 16 points, five rebounds, three assists, and 1.5 steals per game.

Nick Anderson had more gaurd skills and was about 40-pounds lighter.

i actually like the nick anderson comparison a lot. Anderson was a really poor ball handler and passer for a gaurd and he played a very tough physical game for a wing, attacked the basket alot and drew a lot of fouls. He was also a good(not great) shooter. I would argue johnson actually has potential for better ball handling skills then anderson but they are very similar in other ways.

First off whoever drafts him I hope the make him More of a 2 guard than 3. You think 6`7 245 Pds which is More like a Tweener than a 2 guard. I see a lot of Joe Johnson/Tyreke Evans. He really improved his jump shot, Handle and Slashing ability has always been there.

He could definitely go lower than 8th. He’s not a freak athlete, doesn’t play center, and doesn’t have amazing upside. So how is he locked in to top 8? It’s only because he was ranked so high preseason.

I think Stanley is easily one of the best prospects in this draft, and is the type of player who I think would be a solid pick wherever they are drafted. He projects as a good defender, has a smooth shot, and leaves it all on the table. Those guys seldom fail in the NBA, and tend to turn into solid NBA pros. He might not be a star player, but people comparing him to Xavier Henry and Jae Crowder is just insulting. I see him more of the Kawhii/Butler mold, and see him as a Corey Meggette type of player; a player capable of putting up 18/6/3 on 45% shooting. Both guys are in great shape, had good size for thier position, and both needed to work on their outside shot coming out of school. Johnson isn’t as physical as Meggette was, but he can have a similar career.

I’m coming around to the argument that Johnson could be best at shooting guard rather than SF.

I think he’s just quick enough to pull it off, and he’ll be able to really bully guard defenders near the rim and on the way to the rim.

Kind of like a 2014 Lance Stephenson.

The Gee floor is pretty insulting.

Did i missed something or Gee was a journeyman puting "numbers" one season in an horrendous cavs team, like players did with lakers, knicks or sixers teams this season…

A 3rd string SF at best nowadays who started in the nba at nearly 23YO.

Same with the Henry floor, this guy only played in an hideous lakers team, he’s a scrub.

Johnson is 19YO…today, and his floor is nba scrubs, 3rd stringers, D-leaguers, TFTI.

I think he’s going to surprise people by being a knockdown shooter from 3. Last year was his first time playing off the ball on the perimeter, with a lot of catch and shoot situations. It just took him a minute to adapt and learn catch and shoot footwork.

Aran had Stanley Johnson in and around the top 5 for alot of the season so naturally in true nbadraft.net style the sheep are going to flock together and overrate him. You can see that by the + points for the Leonard/Butler comment and Greener for saying he is easily one of the best prospects in the draft.

Stanley Johnson is not going to be as good as Leonard or Jimmy Butler, nor he is one of the best prospects in the draft.

Stanley Johnson is overrated by users on here, I do not think he will be that good as a pro….

as mentioned above his shot/release worries me. I think a lot of guys are down on him since the measurements. I thought his season went ok, obviously a learning experience and on a team where the scoring is often quite balanced(Ashley, RHJ) with a few guys scoring in the mid teens at most.

I think he plays ‘bigger’ than the 6-5 height and if used properly can have a good future. To me he is a two way player with all star potential. I cant see him ever having a great break down handle but enough moves to get space for his shot and draw fouls on his drives. I feel hes way more ready to contribute than Winslow personally
