San Antonio Spurs coach Gregg Popovich added Becky Hammon to his staff on Tuesday, making the longtime WNBA player the first woman assistant coach in the NBA.

No contract details were available. Hammon is finishing her 16th WNBA season overall and her eighth with the San Antonio Stars. She announced last month that she is retiring as a player at the end of the 2014 season.
“I very much look forward to the addition of Becky Hammon to our staff,” Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said in a statement. “Having observed her working with our team this past season, I’m confident her basketball IQ, work ethic and interpersonal skills will be a great benefit to the Spurs.”

Hammon, a six-time WNBA All-Star who missed the previous season because of a knee injury, ranks seventh in WNBA history in points (5,809), fourth in assists (1,687) and sixth in games (445). She holds Stars franchise records for assists (1,112) and three-point field goals made (493) and is second in points (3,442) and games (218).
Earlier this summer, the Spurs hired highly regarded international coach Ettore Messina as an assistant.

This is quite a step forward since this has always been a guys league. I am very interested to see how the players react to having a female coach on the sidelines and behind closed doors. Don’t get me wrong because I like the move and have complete faith in anything the Spurs and Pop do, but we have all been in a locker room before and we know what guys talk about. If any team can treat a woman coach with the respect she deserves it will probably be the Spurs.

Maybe Parker wouldn’t agree to sign his extension unless they signed Hammon?  This is a joke, but I actually wouldn’t totally doubt it either.

I believe she’s the 2nd female assistant. The Cavaliers had Lisa Boyer in the early 2000’s as an assistant

Technically you are right, Boyer was an assistant coach, but she was a volunteer assistant coach. Hammons is the first paid assistant coach.

Coach in waiting when Pop eventually steps down? I have been drinking anything the Spurs have been serving for awhile. If they think it is a good move, then it is hard to question them. This is the 2nd really interesting thing they have done with their coaching staff this offseason after of course hiring Messina. Not sure if there is a better job for a young assistant. You get to learn under two great coaches, with a really good group of high IQ players.

Messina is the coach in waiting at the Spurs, not Hammons.

How old is Messina? Personally I think he is with the Spurs so Pop can learn from him and he can better learn the NBA game for Pop. I don’t see him waiting around until Pop retires unless it is maybe 2 years at max. The guy is a head coach at heart, but going to the Spurs organization and learning under Pop as an assistant is a better job than some of the other head coaching jobs in my opinion. That is the only reason why I don’t think it will be him, but who knows, you can coach for awhile as long as you are in decent enough health to travel from city to city.

We have female NBA referees now, why not a female assistant coach?  If there is anyplace that this would work would be San Antonio, one of the best run teams in all of pro sports.  Good for them and Becky Hammon.  I don’t think it’s too far-fetched to have a female head coach in the NBA sometime soon.

No surprise, the Spurs are yet again ahead of the curve.

Class organization, class move, Pop always gets it right.

That’s awesome, I grew up watching her and she is one of my all time favourite players. I wish her luck and it will be interesting to see how she does in the NBA.
