The spurs have to be considered one of the best built teams in the last decade. They never loaded up on superstars or made mega trades they drafted and signed players to excel at a role and play to there advantages while playing excellent defense. They have one superstar and some other really good players but if you watch San Antonio they get great play out of players who don’t succed anywhere else and manage to win championships. For instance Rasho Nesterovic was there starting center and he was big for them as well as nazr mohammed and roger mason and list goes on. Then other teams see these players excelling they try to get these players and overpay them just to find out it was San Antonio that made them look good not the individual player. Popovich has to be considered one of best coaches in the nba.

    George Hill, Blair, and Neal!!!

Neal seems like he can be great 8th or 9th man for them.

Definitely… i think the spurs are very similar to the new england patriots in terms of creating a ‘formula’ and just adding new guys to the formula to fill into the spot and they consistently are among the best teams in the league. in new england they were able to get rid of richard seymour and randy moss among others (willie mcginest) and now they have no big names on their defense yet they have the best team record-wise in the league. coaching in san antonio is spectacular as is in new england. stick with the star (tom brady/tim duncan) and you set yourself up to be successful each and every year

The Spurs have always been great at getting the best out of players who can compliment Tim Duncan and Coach Poppovich and Ric Burford have always had a knack of selecting good players from lower down the draft over the years. So you have an excellent front office, one of the most successful coaches ever who have built a team around Tim Duncan since David Robinson retired to the title on several occasions.

The Spurs are good, but what puts them ahead of so many other good teams is ref manipulation.  They play a physical game, Duncan is famous for complaining, Ginobili iniates contact often and flops all the time and Poppovich works the refs all game long every game.  Don’t get me wrong the Spurs would be good without all this nonsense, but they have been doing it for so long Spurs fans have come to expect games to be called questionablly in their favor in the 4th quarter.  They don’t cheat.  They just complain and flop and commit small offensive fouls late in the game expecting to be bailed out with whistles against the opponent instead of non-calls.  It’s working.  It’s been working for a long time and it’s not going to stop.  The are good, but this is what makes people think they are elite.

you can’t seriously think the spurs are only elite because refs favor them…. you obvioulsy don’t know spurs history

the derick fisher buzzer shot with .4 seconds on the clock, the spurs file an offical report to the NBA saying the clock was started after fisher had already touched it…. the nba said youre right, but what can we do….

same thing when spurs lakers, after they beat the hornets in 7 games, spurs down 3 seconds left, brent barry pump fake, fisher falls onto his back barry flings the shot up…. no call, again, front office officials apologized for the no call the next day….

does giniobili flop? of course, but being the competitor he is, he does whatever it takes to win, its the refs fault for calling it, not his…

if you think players like ginobili and duncan get more favorable calls than kobe, lebron, wade, durant you out of your mind… and not only do you think that, you think thats why they win championships?

ginobili weighs a little over 200 pounds, he is not strong, he does flop, but he get flung around more…

the spurs defense funnels penetration toward duncan because hes so good at protecting the rim, naturally, hes a magnet for calls, and pop does his best make sure the refs don’t call ticky tack fouls on him…

the spurs have a notoriously bad relationship with refs if antyhing? the ref that got suspended for a year because he ejected duncan for laughing on the bench…. exact same ref, who in his first game reffing the spurs since the suspension, made the brent barry no call

I think they were elite because they picked up Robinson and Duncan (luck) and have better management (FO skill and coaching) than a lot of other teams.  I also won’t argue that they’ve been screwed by refs in some big games.  I also won’t argue that they get better calls than Kobe, Lebron, Wade or Durant.  I will argue they do get plenty of star calls though and they do constantly complain to the refs about fouls called on them or no calls.  I do believe this gives them an advantage in many games.  Does it win them championships?  No, but it make it hard to watch them while they bitch and moan about every little call in games where they should just flat out be beating inferior teams.  I do believe it helps them during the regular season pull out close games that they should never have let be close in the first place.  I will say though that I can’t stand it when people defend Giniobili’s flopping or Jeter’s pretending to get hit with a pitch or Duncan’s reaction to any foul called on him ever.  Yes they are competitive, but willfully trying to manipulate the refs to make a bad call is horrible.  It’s on the refs to make the call, but I stopped following the Spurs every game because the lack of sportsmanship is awful.  Worse with this team it’s institutional and has been long enough the fans defend it.
