According to nba sources the Wizards have traded Rashard Lewis’ expiring contract and the 46th pick to New Orleans for Emeka Okafor and Trevor Ariza.

Interesting trade for both teams. I like it for WAS.

Hmmm….That will free up a lot of cap at the end of next season….Good trade for both teams in my opinion….Ariza seems kinda redundant with Vesely/Singleton….but that probably rules out MKG to the Wiz maybe? They’ll probably get Beal now

So will Washington take another defensive wing player in MKG or will they take Thomas Robinson at 3 if he’s available? Maybe Brad Beal if they’re looking for shooting? Hmm…

I love this move for the Hornets for cap relief…

But for the Wizards… Why take on the last two years of both Okafor and Ariza’s contracts? That doesn’t make sense to me.

Is Washington going to play Okafor at the 4? Will they trade him, or Blatche? Ariza as well, plays the same spot as both of their 1st rounders from last year. I like the pieces but not the fit.

My lord this was a horrible deal for the Wizards. Rather just buying out Shard they have Okafor on the books for 2yrs/$28M and Ariza for 2yrs/$15M. Of even greater concern is now Seraphin (who showed a ton of promise at the end of last year), Vesely and Singleton won’t get nearly the playing time they need. What the heck is wrong with them? Better hope Beal doesn’t go #2 is all I can say for Washington.

This was highway robbery for NO. They can buy out Lewis and just got rid of two bad contracts. They’ll have $15M on the books next year and they still have their amnesty!

This might sound ridiculous, but with so much money and Gordon and Anthony Davis in place, they would have enough money to sign Deron Williams AND another top free agent…

Amnesty okafor…or not, draft beal and move crawford to the bench where he is best suited as instant offense, singleton instant defense too.

Ariza without the ball in his hands will not make so much bad decisions and poor shooting, a running mate to wall, beal for the shooting and all around game.

That team will improve defensively and offensively, nene had an impact late in the year in limited minutes and coming off the bench, seraphin was great, team finishing on a high note 8-2 in the last 10.

HMMMM i don’t think MKG goes to WAs no with Ariza their. Most likely Beal since that seems to be the spot they need most now

    Wall

    Beal

    Ariza

    Emeka

    Nene

Then you have Singlton,Vessey (both can play some four, and Serphin coming off the bench as well as Crawford and Booker.

Thats not a bad line up. You have defense, double figure post offense from both bigs, rebounding, outside shooting and a slaher at pg. Very good trade for the Wizards

David Stern must still be running the Hornets because the Wizards just got punked…

I don’t see how this is a good deal… You give up cap relief and a draft pick for two overrated/overpaid players? This doesn’t really make sense…

From a basketball perspective Ariza makes sense; he’s an above average perimeter defender, he has championship experience and spreads the floor with his outside shooting.

Singleton is okay, but Ariza is a seasoned vet, and Vesely is a PF. I do think it narrows down their lottery selections to Beal or Drummond though. Drummond would be brought along slowly behind Nene, Okafor and Seraphin. Beal is the obvious choice here, he’d allow Crawford to move to a 6th man role with Ariza now in place to start at the SF, and his outside shooting would fit perfectly with Wall’s passing and ability to force defenses to collapse on him, allowing a kickout to the open shooter.

Leonsis and the Wizards have obviously decided to go for win-now mode, in an effort to reassure Wall, and if Wittman can keep the locker room they definitely have a shot of making playoffs. They have a good mix of veterans and young talent, and another high draft pick to boot.

I daresay Blatche gets amnestied next, they’ve added value on court and gotten rid of Lewis’ toxic presence, leaving Blatche as the only knucklehead to clear out.

Another deal coming up for the Wizards perhaps? Or maybe they just wanted to bring some pros in to mold the youth. Probably a bit of both. I wonder if the Wizards will amnesty Blatche now.

As I said in the other thread the Wizards should have asked for the 10th pick
btw, does this mean end any chance of Wizards taking Andre Drummond?

looks like im the only one who actually likes the deal for the wizzards. i dont see whats wrong with a team getting more defensive veterans on a team full of young talent. do the wizzards loose any of that young talent? no. do they get players better than who they are currently fielding, yes. have they been going to the lottery enough these past few years? yes. should they try and contend for a play-off birth already, yes. do they know have one of the toughest defensive front courts in the east? yes.

i for the record, i like Chris Singleton, Kevin Seraphin and Trevor Booker and what they bring on the table. But do i feel that they are still going through growing pains? yes i do. and much rather see them develop at a proper pace then forcing them into situations that would help them but continue to post up the losses and result another return to the lottery. they’ve acquired and kept young talent that show that they belong to stay in the league. now they get to mix that talent with some solid vets who play on both ends of the court and develop their talent at a much proper pace. no need to be forced to play youngsters extended minutes when they dont deserve it. no need to have a lack of options on the floor. if they outplay their veteran counter parts, then let them have the minutes. but dont let them get it by default. make the prove and show that they deserve the time on the floor that they get.

i really liked the deadline trade of the wizzards getting Nene. now i believe its another positive step in going on the right direction as far as the culture of the organization goes.

The Wizards obviously improved their defense but it was at a severe price financially. My only guess is they view the free agent group of 2014 to be more talented and attainable than the 2013 free agents. It is obviously more talented since players like LeBron, Carmelo, Rudy Gay, Danny Granger could be free agents but I still am questioning the move since it is unlikely they bring in any big name player. Carmelo is the only player I could possibly see them getting since he is familiar with the DC area.

and what would change in a year? If they aren’t going to sign a big FA from 2014, why would they get one from 2013? Obviously you already answered the question and that means the money meant nothing to them since they wont have to re-sign any key pieces next year.

Also, chances NO signs a big FA with their new found cap space? Answer rhymes with ‘Deniro.’ The only way this helps the Hornets is to get Shabazz Muhammad next year.

In the end, I’m not sure I like it for either squad. The Hornets will end up blowing the $$ saved on Eric Gordon and some mid-level talent like Gerald Wallace. For the Wizards, Ernie Grunfeld has, for about the 5th time in his GM’ing career, put together a squad with an ultimate ceiling of 2nd round playoff loss.

They will have cleared off $21 million dollars next year. They still have Rashard Lewis under contract for this season now. I don’t know if he’ll be willing to do a buy out, but either way it will cost them some money.

NO only had $17 committed next year to Jarrett Jack (15.6 ppg 6.3 apg), Jason Smith (9.9 apg 4.9 rpg), Al-Farouq Aminu (6 and 4.7, still just 22), Xavier Henry, Gustavo Ayon (5.9 and 4.9) and Grevis Vasquez (8.9 and 5.4)…that’s a fair amount of production for $17M. Let’s assume they sign Eric Gordon to a max deal next year, starting at $16M.

Now let’s get crazy. Let’s say that with a decent young PG in Grevis Vasquez to serve as a backup, they amnesty Jarrett Jack and offer Deron Williams a max deal, the immediate pitch being a first-rate scoring off guard (the likes of which Deron has never had) in Eric Gordon, and one of the best prospects in years in Anthony Davis to anchor them down low. Deron’s max deal would start at $18M. Subtracting Jack’s $5.5M and factoring in Deron and Gordon’s contracts, they’re still only at $36.5M.

In Free Agency they offer Kevin Garnett a 2yr/$30M deal. That’s overpaying, and we’re still only at $51.5M, a good $6M under the cap. Garnett is the perfect mentor for Davis and both can play either big man position.

They still have the #10 pick and opt for Austin Rivers for extra scoring off the bench and sign  If we assume that Aminu, the #8 pick two years ago, who at the very least can be a good defender/rebounder and score when you need him to while proving excellent athleticism and energy, is ready to start…

PG- Deron Williams / Grevis Vasquez

SG – Eric Gordon / Austin Rivers

    SF – Al-Farouq Aminu / FA/MLE signing

PF – Anthony Davis / Jason Smith

    C – Kevin Garnett / Gustavo Ayon

OBVIOUSLY this is not going to happen. This is just an indication of what potential this franchise now has. That was fun.

what an irony it will be if now NO gonna use their money and sign in free agency both Deron Williams and Gerald Wallace out of Brooklyn Nets!

also i think after this trade i needs to change my mock, cause it very well might tell us the NO going center with the 10th pick.

this how they could look according to this:

    Deron Williams/Jarrett Jack/Greivis Vasquez
    Eric Gordon/Xavier Henry
    Gerald Wallace/Al-Farouq Aminu
    Anthony Davis/Gustavo Ayon
    (Tyler Zeller/Meyers Leonard)/Jason Smith

Maybe the Wiz are actually trying to win in that case this is a good trade.

    Wall

    Beal

    Ariza

    Nene

    Okafor

Add a good backup G,F, and Big man and you have a team that could end up in the playoffs next year

When healthy Okafor can block shots and rebound. He can also run the floor. Ariza will be an upgrade at the 3. I believe like many of you that this locks Beal in. I think he is the perfect mate for Wall. Of course he has to make to pick 3. When they traded McGee for Nene they started thinking win now so this move doesn’t surprise me. Those young guys can still develope but in a winning atmosphere instead of a losing one. Lewis hasn’t and wasn’t gonna to anything for them. I don’t think alot of people would wanna sign in Wahington via free agency. I really like the addition.

As for New Orleans, it gives them flexibility to keep Gordon but open’s the door a little more up front. I think they should keep Kaman or do a sign and trade possibly with him. They like Aminu but they may have someone else at the SF spot in mind at pick 10. I think they need to upgrade the 1 and 3 position’s, this move gives them the flexibility to do so. I think it’s a win win trade for both sides.

The Wizards have added nice depth but have taken on a lot of cap and I would have hoped they could have somehow moved Blatche as part of the deal. Adding Okafor and Ariza gives them a lot more experience coupled with Nene it now gives John Wall an excellent supporting cast. I’d assume that they now don’t draft a big man as they already have younger prospects in Booker and Seraphin playing behind Okafor and now Nene. Plus Vesley will need to see some PF minutes with Ariza and Singleton at SF.

Maybe they look to trade down for Beal or Lamb unless they think they can use Barnes or MKG as mainly a SG or slot Ariza in there or even maybe take Lillard and use him as a bench option at both PG or SG behind Wall and Crawford.

With a possible trade down they could maybe shift Blatche but to get the required SG they would need to do a deal with someone in the 6 to 8 range. Portland have no contracts that really match Blatche, GSW could send Biedrins in return but he is still owed $18 million over the next two years so Washington only save $ 5million. Toronto might do a deal and send Calderon the other way, this would save Washington around $13 million in salary but if they are chasing say Beal, hecould be off the board by 8 at worse still both Beal and Lamb are gone by 8.

One deal to move Blatche and get an established backcourter in alongside Wall could be to do a deal with Detroit whereby they take Blatche and 3rd for 9th pick and Stuckley or Gordon. Ideally it would be Stuckley as this gives Washington a salary saving and they get a younger guy than Gordon with his bigger contract.

Detroit take on Blatche and try to make something of him or pay him off but they get 3rd pick so can target T-Rob or Drummond to slot in alongside Monroe.

As regards NOH with the Wizards deal, they save a load of cap space and may well just pay off Lewis the $13.9 million aprox his buyout is. They decide to build around Davis, hope that Gordon resigns and maybe now make an effort to keep Kaman as they will have minutes which need filling.
