Can someone explain to me how a team can reach an agreement to sign a player when at present they do not have the necessary cap space to do so? The Hayward signing became official before the Celts were able to free up cap space.

What if however, after they had "signed" Hayward, no team is willing to take on the salaries of guys like Crowder to make the signing happen? This is only hypothetical of course because a lot of teams would love to take on the salaries of Bradley, Crowder or Smart. But only for the sake of the post, assuming that absolutely no team would agree with a trade with the Celtics that will enable them to free up cap space (even sign and trades), what would happen to their signing of Hayward? Is it vetoed or something along those lines?

Excuse me if this question may seem dumb to some but I just got really confused about this officially signing a player even if you don’t have the cap space to do so stuff.

Because its only a verbal agreement, and nothing is set in stone until they sign the papers.

Look what happened with Deandre Jordan and the Mavs. That’s pretty much the same thing, except Hayward actually went through with it.

Same thing happened with the Miami Heat. LeBron made the "decision" before the Heat even had the cap space to go through with it. Players took pay cuts, and then the exact scenerio to painted happened. They needed to trade Beasley’s contract, and the Timberwolves were more than happy to oblidge.

The NBA is full of tunnel vision GMs and things get really political. Why burn a bridge with a GM that you might have to make a deal with later? Or an Agent, or a player? That’s jsut terrible politics and business.

Plus, these type of scenerios are good for other teams. Like mentioned above, the Wolves got a #2 pick for pennies on the dollar. The Pistons got a top 10 SG and 2nd round pick for pennies on the dollar.

July 1st teams can negotiate deals with players.

July 6th players can sign those deals.

Celtics and Hayward already agreed on the knowing Celtics needed to move somebody.

That’s where the sign and trade talks came from.

Difference was under a Million according to what I heard.

Either Hayward would’ve be okay with a little less money or Celtics had to cut somebody.

simillar situation happened last year as well with a move everyone outside warrior fans hated. kevin durant agreed to sign with the warriors but golden state needed the help of the mavs to absorb andrew bogut’s deal in order for them to get the cap space to do it.

The player/agent would never take the meeting if the team didn’t already have a mapped out way to clear the desired salary. GM’s (at least the good ones) gauge the value of their guys and potential suitors all the time so when they have to actually strike on a trade like this, it usually doesn’t take long.

they tryed to move crowder ended up having to move a better player

crowder is cheap though so who knows, maybe they don’t think Bradley would stay after next year anyway so they cut him loose
