Someone define GOAT in the abstract

Everyone always talks about who they think is the greatest basketball player of all time but I don't know if there is a consensus on what the term means in the abstract. It obviously can't mean the best player on a team that won the most rings since obviously there would be no discussion and Russell would be crowned GOAT and no one else would be worthy of even being considered.

Most people believe some adjustment should be made for players getting better over time and more athletic. There are certain periods in which the nba gets worse due to expansion but in general the average nba player has gotten better over time.

So is GOAT....
Is it a players value to a typical team during their best 3 years? In my view Shaq.
Is it a players value to a typical team during their best 5-6 years? In my view Shaq once again
Is it a players value to a typical team during their best 10 years? Shaq, Magic, Jordan, Hakeem are some of the players worthy of consideration here.
Is it a players value to a typical team over the course of their entire nba career? If longevity is rewarded, it would favor a guy like Kareem and possibly KG if he played a few more years. KG started helping his team right out of high school. But under this criteria, Lebron will be extremely tough to beat if he doesn't suffer a significant injury before the age of 34-36 since he would have had a ridiculous number of years of being a top 1-5 player in the game. Ever since his second year in the league, Lebron has been a top 5 player.

San Antonio doesn’t want and

San Antonio doesn’t want and won’t ever get many of the headlines, but this is a team every West contender will have its eyes on throughout this season – they’re simply that dangerous.

"I don't know why (the media)

"I don't know why (the media) is paying any more attention to it now as opposed to two years ago when I said it," Bryant said quizzically. "It's the same old, same old. I don't know what caused it to get their attention right now.

When Dwight Howard and Kobe

When Dwight Howard and Kobe Bryant finally emerged from the Los Angeles Lakers' locker room late in the first quarter, they got a standing ovation just for walking to their seats.u45y54

The Lakers' fans shouldn't

The Lakers' fans shouldn't worry. Their big stars expect to be out of street clothes and back in uniform very soon - and for much bigger games than an exhibition in the Inland Empire.97yoi78

Detroit hasn’t finished above

Detroit hasn’t finished above .500 since the 2007-08 season and a youth movement finally appears to be taking over, but the Pistons follow their own ideals when it comes to player development. The Pistons’ four rookies and other developing players hoping for playing time will have to earn it.

Smith played the majority of

Smith played the majority of last season with a trade demand looming in the air, but according to several teammates, the forward is comfortable with the direction the Hawks are heading after the hiring of president of basketball operations and general manager Danny Ferry. Shortly after being hired, Ferry traded six-time All-Star guard Joe Johnson to Brooklyn and longtime starting small forward Marvin Williams to Utah in deals which netted the team close to $30 million in salary cap room next summer.hert343

Former two-time scoring

Former two-time scoring champion Tracy McGrady’s star power may have flickered in the NBA after an assortment of injuries robbed his explosiveness, but the forward still has global appeal evident by his one-year deal to play with the Qingdao DoubleStar Eagles of the Chinese Basketball Association.

McGrady’s former teammate with the Atlanta Hawks point guard Jeff Teague spent time in China this past summer and noted how big the NBA game is there and how the fans have very strong love for McGrady.

“It’s huge,” Teague said of

“It’s huge,” Teague said of the NBA’s impact in China. “They love basketball over there. I didn’t think they were going to know me. I got off the plane and people were screaming my name. I didn’t think they would have a clue who I was.”

“They love basketball,” Teague continued. “They asked me about Tracy McGrady. They love Tracy McGrady over there. It was a lot of fun.”34t3443

And it’s that versatility

And it’s that versatility that is going to pay the biggest dividends for Green in 2011-12.

Green isn’t known as a great defender, but he did hold small forwards to a 7.8 Player Efficiency Rating while he was with the Celtics in 2011 (the league average is 15).
