Smith coming to NY

According to Frank Isola of the Daily News, a deal that would make J.R. Smith a Knick is close to being finalized.

"Jeremy Lin will soon have to learn to play with Carmelo Anthony, as well as one of Anthony's former Denver Nuggets teammate.

The Knicks are closing in on a deal to sign free agent shooting guard J.R. Smith, the Daily News has learned. Smith began the season in China, but has been eyeing a return to the NBA once the lockout ended.

Smith's agent, Leon Rose, met with Garden Chairman James Dolan following Wednesday's Knicks' win over Sacramento to finalize a contract. It is believed that Smith, who has also attracted the interest of the Clippers, will receive the Knicks' $2.5 million exception. Rose also represents Anthony, who has lobbied the club to add Smith, an explosive scorer who can also be erratic at times. He has averaged 12.5 points per game over seven NBA seasons.

Smith, 25, was involved in the brawl between the Knicks and Nuggets in 2006, which began when former Knick Mardy Collins fouled Smith hard from behind. Moments earlier, then Knicks coach Isiah Thomas had warned Anthony not to go to the basket because the Knicks, who were being blown out, would hit him.

In order to create a roster spot for Smith, the Knicks would have to release a player. If Lin never got a chance two weeks ago he would have been the most likely candidate. Instead, someone from the group of Mike Bibby, Renaldo Balkman or Toney Douglas is in danger of being released."

With the additon of Smith and his ex-Nugget teamate Carmelo Anthony to the Knicks' lineup, the question of their impact on the teams chemistry will obviously arise. However, Smith adds a scoring threat to the Knicks' bench that strengthens their rotation and Carmelo Anthony, although overlooked by the emergence of Lin, has been more willing to defer to teammates in the games leading up to his injury. Having said that, what do you expect the Knicks to look like this time next week?

Bibby

Bibby is the obvious option there. Tony Douglas still has plenty of value and J.R. is a guard so there would be no point in getting rid of Balkman.

Good move for the Knicks but I was hoping that the Lakers would make deals with both he and Arenas to improve their second unit.

LOL I miss the selfish duo of Anthony and Smith.....add Shumpert to that mix and you have a selfish trifecta on the wings to put with Lin.

Pretty good pickup I guess. I would imagine they cut Bibby. I really think he would have fit in better with the clippers however.

chemistry

i think bringing jr to the knicks is a bad move. i think it is going to stunt the progress of landry fields, toney douglas and bill walker. who knows how the chemistry is going to work with lin, melo and amare and now throw in jr. being a nuggs fan, i know all about jr's game. if he makes a couple 3s, he turns into a black hole on offense. if he misses a couple 3s, he turns into a black hole on offense.

Melo coming back is enough of

Melo coming back is enough of a distraction, bringing in JR was worth the risk when the Knicks were a sinking ship and they needed a spark but guess what..they got that spark.. I think he'd fit in better with the Clippers where they have more veteran leadership on the team with CP Kenyon and Chauncy on the bench now. It'll be interesting to see how he effects Landrys minutes and production.

He would without a doubt fit

He would without a doubt fit in better with the clips, but it wouldn't be a bad pickup for the knicks. He'd be their best bench scorer by far, and him plus Shumpert (who people hate on, but is really one of the better bench players/rookies) make up a dynamic backcourt off the bench.

I'm shocked I think J.R.

I'm shocked I think J.R. Smith is a totall idiot for this move, or Smith just confirmed he's a total idiot for his move.

Like what could he be possibly thinking? What does he think he brings to New York that they don't already have? The Knicks got Fields, Shumpert, and Walker at the 2guard where does Smith fit in? I guess he just takes Shumperts and Fields minutes right? Well how do you think that makes Fields and Shumpert feel?

And Shumpert and Smith are not a dynamic back court at all that's going to be a trainwreck both of them dudes are hot dogs.

The Clippers meanwhile are good enough to contend without even a real SG on their team. He would of fit seamlessly into that team considering he gives them something they don't even have. Plus Lin is not Chris Paul sorry Knick fans.

Maybe he really wants to leave a legacy in China by going to play with Lin and having his Chinese fan base follow him because nothing else makes sense. And the Knicks don't make sense how many scorers do they need their is only one ball.

I can't wait for this to blow up in their face because it's going to. If Smith don't get minutes he's gonna start trouble, and he's a terrible fit so when he get's minutes it's gonna be bad basketball. This is also going to directly affect the play of Fields and Shumpert who have both been playing really well of late but now the management just basically told them they have no faith in them.

Don't need him as much now,

Don't need him as much now, esp. with Fields, Shumpert playing better.

How many SG's do they need and how much playing time can they all get.

I figured he'd play out West maybe the Lakers or Clippers.

I dont know how D'Antoni will

I dont know how D'Antoni will keep up the chemistry in this team. Carmelo is coming back and its obvious he will get 36-39mpg. And then you have to put also in the rotation 2 guys ( Davis, Smith)who used to play major minutes in this league. Lin deserves to play. Shumpert deserves to play because of his defense which is impresive. I was anxious if Baron gets his minutes and now when Smith will be here it's going to be tough for D'Antoni to make them all happy. You dont make trades when you win 7 in a row but maybe they are preparing for some major trade? Chandler, Stoudemire, Fields and maybe Shumpert for Howard. Not saying it will happen but I'm trying to explain myself why they signed J.R.

Went to see where JR is

Went to see where JR is from...Freehold, NJ. As I suspected, part of his reasoning for wanting to play for the Knicks may have been living close to home/family/friends. Freehold, NJ might as well be NY. He very well may have been a Knicks fan growing up.

If anyone saw last game, you

If anyone saw last game, you would know they need more scoring off the bench. JR Smith is smart because he has a chance to be part of a really good team and a big story. He is not dumb enough to cause trouble with all eyes on New York Knicks and linsanity. All he has to do is come off the bench and he may have the green light to shoot it. I would rather him shoot then Toney Douglas. I doubt JR Smith will start, he is probably going to get about 20 to 25 minutes and take time away from Bibby who should be cut and Billy Walker.

Carmelo will take Walker and

Carmelo will take Walker and Novak minutes. J.R will have to take them for Fields, Shumpert and Bibby. I can see that working for now because you can start with Lin and Fields where Lin is the main p&r player and then you go to Shumpert and Smith. If you've Smith playing in Denver you know that he can create of the p&r not only for himself. Smith will get 20-25 and Fields probably 25 to 30 because he can be also an backup 3 behind Carmelo. But what when Davis will be ready? That's the bigest question for me. And as I said I wouldnt be surprised if they are planing to go for Howard. They have some pieces, I read that Orlando want to win so they might be interested in an offer from the Knicks.

i see what your saying

i see what your saying hubbub. there's never too much (agree 100%), is also a quick way to get rid of bibby's playing time. but im not a big fan of jr smith, melo and shumpert on the same team... it will destroy team chemistry inevitably.

Yeah Smith went to St.

Yeah Smith went to St. Patricks which is in Elizabeth, Jersey I'm pretty sure which is right across from NY. But for all that he could of signed with the Nets and averaged 20ppg for the rest of the season and that would be enough for him to get some huge contrac offers in the offseason.

But this still don't make sense from a basketball standpoint and the Knicks didn't have Melo back last night that's why it looked like they needed some more bench scoring. But Sheltwon I really don't know what game you were watching if you think the Knicks look like they needed bench scoring last night they blew the Kings out and scored 100....?...Why did it look like they needed bench scoring?

Plus not only do you have Melo coming back but you got Amare tryna find his groove. He's only averaging 18ppg and you can bet he's gonna be shooting to get that average back up over 20.

The Knicks still don't have any depth behind Amare and Chandler and even tho Iman is a knucklehead on offense that dude is one mean defender. He's one of them players I like to watch just to see him play defense and if they could get him to stop taking bad shots, or shots all together, he could play 34 mpg and be a lockdown 2guard which is exactly the type of player the Knicks need.

I'm just upset cause I'm a

I'm just upset cause I'm a big JR Smith fan I've always been, I actually wanted the Sixers to take him in the draft over Iggy and they were gonna but ultimately got Iggy because he fit better with A.I. But if Iggy wasn't on the board JR Smith would of been the pick.

But I do agree that this smells like the set up to a big trade I just don't think it's Howard. I don't think Orlando wants Amare considering he's not the same player he was even last year and Chandler has no use if their isn't offensive firepower on the team that's why the Bobcats gave him away.

But considering Lin has already proven he can win with Amare and Chandler you guys don't think Melo being traded isn't a bigger possibility then ever before?

And you guys really think Shumpert and Smith make a good backcourt? They're both ball dominant and take bad shots only Smith actually makes them.

And I don't think you have to worry about Baron Davis fitting in from what I've heard his back is shot. Even if he came back he couldn't log major minutes.

Shumpert can adjust. He's

Shumpert can adjust. He's playing much better with Lin playing the point. He's one of the best rookie defenders I have ever seen. The Knicks can afford to loose him while having Amare and Melo. Also they will never make of Lin a lockdown defender so I would never trade Shumpert with this core of the team. His jumpshot looks nice so I think he will develop his offensive game. Cant wait to see how it all works.

The Knicks

Are the Knicks going to petition the league to allow them to use 2 basketballs at a time?

heh... then you throw baron

heh... then you throw baron davis and you got yourself a group of chemistry-killers. iman shumpert is great by the way we all knew he would be the steal of the draft together with marshon brooks. i likes what he brings off the bench and fields is already a great team guy. i just don't lke j.r for ny right now.

With Baron Davis coming on

With Baron Davis coming on and JR Smith, I wonder if the Knicks can find any more low accuracy, high volumne shooters to add to the mix? Well at least the guy is a bonafide athlete and he knows how to play with Melo.

-Wrong, you could move Fields to the 3 and run Davis/Smith/Fields off the bench. Shumpert could/should start. You could deal Douglas and Bill Walker.

Knicks first line: Lin/Shump/Melo/Amare/Chandler

Second line: Davis/Smith/Fields/Jeffries/ Jorts/Novak

I actually think this is a

I actually think this is a good move. Fields and SHumpert are versatile enough to just come in off the bench as the backup 2/3/1. Could potentially just start Shump beside of Melo and co now that they have Lin to keep the ball out of his hands more often and allow JR to bring his instant scoring from the bench. Or they could even allow Shumpert to play the backup point allowing Melo to handle the ball as he has done throughout the season while Lin is out.I see it 2 ways.

Tyson/Jeffries/Jordan

Amare/Harrellson/Balkman

Melo/Fields/Walker

Shumpert/JR/Fields

Lin/Shumpert/T.D.

or

Tyson/Jeffries/Jordan

Amare/Harrellson/Balkman

Melo/Fields/Walker

JR/Shumpert/Fields

Lin/Shumpert/T.D.

i like it

yesterday knicks had nothing offensivly when lin was on the bench. now we have another threat on the outside who melo trust and should earn the trust of the team. fields will still get his minutes and so will shump.tony has been gone since the inception of Linsanity. novak will still get run as the stretch 4. realling want to see lin smith walker novak amare on the floor. 3 knock down shooters and pick n roll with lin and amare with great spacing will be fun to watch. mike bibby is out. he came here to hit threes and hasnt been able to execute.

starters will still be Lin/fields/melo/amare/tyson

and our bench with shump/jr/walker/novak/jeffries

i dont think davis will come back which leaves me a litle worried about the backup pg because shumpert isnt really a good decision maker. but bennch is nice brings toughness with shump and jeffries. and provides great floor spacing with jr novak and walker.

know how the team meshes with melo and J.R is going to be on the coach. cant wait to see if they can or cant play together. if they mesh the L better watch out. Lets go KNICKS!
