I’ve only read about him and have never seen Exum play.  So I’m curious if anyone has an informed opinion – which is a better fit for the Kings?  Obviously the stock on Exum is higher but as I said I’ve never seen him play.

Smart is probably a better personality fit for the Kings. They are full of guys who play for themselves and haven’t won since college. Smart’s competitive nature and toughness are infectious and would probably bring out the best in the Kings players. Exum would be better for a team with a more stable foundation because his upside is considerably higher.

Not so sure a guy who got into it with a fan would be the best guy to put with Cousins who is already unstable. That team could turn into 2004 Pistons all over again.

The Kings wouldn’t mind being the 04 Pistons, since they won the championship that year

They won in 2003-2004 season. The brawl took place in November of 2004 in the 2004-2005 season.

Thanks for both comments.  Those are my two fears – that Smart challenges Cousins for the league lead in techs and that Exum is a bad fit because he needs a more stable franchise.  But we don’t have top tier free agents ready to walk through that door so we have to take boom or bust risks.  That’s why we drafted Cousins to begin with.

A small pool of people have seen Exum play. And besides his brief performance in the Nike Hoop Summit last year, he’s been playing against high schoolers in Austrailia so there is simply no way to project is "skill set" to the NBA. To answer the question, you gotta go with Smart if you want the safe pick. No doubt there is the chance that any GM who passes on Exum will look like an idiot if he indeed blows up the way people are making him out to be. But hey, don’t you technically run that risk with any prospect?

I think that Smart’s power will translate a little more readily to the NBA and his drives will open up the lane for McLemore.

However, Exum has the greater potential.

I would go with Smart. His skills, defensive ability, and intagibles are just too good to pass up on. Dante Exum has the higher upside, but also is more likely to bust IMO.

Lol people like you crack me up.  Just because you and I havn’t seen much of Exum does not mean professional franchises havn’t.  That is why they hire scouts.

I think Smart would be a great fit for the Kings.

I don’t see the Kings taking Exum. If they move up to 1-3 they’ll take one of Wiggins, Parker, Embiid. If they stay at 7
I see one of the teams drafting 5 or 6 taking Exum.

I say teams should take a risk based on upside and go with Exum. But only if they can work him out privately of course.

Teams know what they’re getting from Smart. Something like Tyreke Evans or Lance Stephenson (both very good players). He will probably be a fringe all-star, locker room leader and set the standard for intensity. I like Smart.

But Exam is rated so highly because he has so much potential and was very impressive in the few times he has taken the court. GM’s should gamble on him because what if he turns out to be a great player? He could turn a franchise’s fortunes around. Smart probably won’t do that on his own.

I just don’t think a GM will look that bad if he takes Exum ahead of Smart and it turns out to be the wrong choice. It isn’t a Darko before Carmello type situation.

frogman when is the last time a scout seen him play? hes been inactive for a while now it would be against the rules if they are  watching him right now. ppl like me? scouts don’t make the pick they search an evaluate  and if we are going by" scouts" they don’t have the best track record with international players. lol

he hasn’t played 1 full season against any top competition.

your right I haven’t seen much and SCOUTS HAVENT EITHER  compared to what they have seen from smart hes the safer pick

This is a foolish statement to lump yourself in the same sentence as an NBA scout.  Majority have seen him play live, in Austrailia and have surely seen every second of game footage that is available on him.  No they haven’t seen him play as much as Smart but to think they are rating him so high based off what sites have him rated at or because of his size is ridiculous.  Sites have him rated high because NBA scouts have him rated highly.

For the Kings I’d say Smart. He’s a natural leader, and defensively he’d help that team a lot. He’s also interchangable playing with either IT2 or McLemore.

I’d say neither. The Kings need a pass-first PG distributing the ball to McLemore, Gay and Cousins. Smart looks like locker room trouble next to Cousins.

McCallum could be a long term solution if he just improves on defense (something Thomas is limited at because of his size). The Kings are probably better off picking someone with the potential to excel defensively… someone like Vonleh comes to mind.

Considering their draft odds, the Kings have to be little lucky to get either. Smart is a winner and more of a distributor than Exum, so he’d probably be a better fit. I do think he’ll have a little trouble driving in the NBA. Exum is a better pick for a team like the Lakers because they’re at square one and need someone to drive and open things up.

I see Exum transitioning to SG when he gets to the NBA. He has the size for it. Smart is a more pure PG. So that should lead to who the Kings should draft. IMO, I don’t think Exum will fall to them. He’s likely a top 5 pick.
