Despite playing only 31 games and less than 1000 career mins in 3 seasons Joel embiid is already eligible for a contract extension. The max salary embiid could potentially receive coming off a rookie deal is 4 yrs and about 100 mil. Under normal circumstances it would seem ridiculous to offer that kind of salary to a player with embiids injury history. However, players of embiids potential just don’t come along very often and you have to do whatever you need to hold on to them.

This is a tough call for Philly. Of course, if you extend embiid and he cant remain healthy, his contract will become dead salary that will significantly impact your ability to not only sign free agents but also to keep your young core talent together long-term.

On the flip side, if you don’t extend him you run the risk of alienating your potential franchise player. While he will only be a restricted fa next summer and the sixers will have the right to match any offer, the price tag to keep him will likely get significantly higher. It could potentially set a bad precedent that management isn’t willing to spend, which could lead to dissension within the team.

This is definitely one of the more interesting negotiations in recent years, especially with the news that embiid still hasn’t been cleared for 5 on 5 with this season fast approaching. What should Philly do?

Yes. Yes. Yes.  His contract would max at 4/100.  How many clowns in the league are making that now.

They should and they will. I’m sure they’ll put incentive clauses or something dealing with health and his money. I read earlier he’s not cleared to do 5 on 5 drills. Not like players are knocking down the door to suit up for the Sixers.

JJ Reddick turned down more money with Houston to play with the amazing Chris Paul again, and James Harden.

I’d say that was a major win for Philly.  This whole "the sixers nobody wants to play there" is extremely short-sighted.

Anyways, its so cliched.  Lebron raises his game everytime he comes to Philly.  Iverson kisses the logo, why?  Because they’re gamers and they know a passionate crowd.

Anyway, could care less what you think of the Sixers, I just know that actual athletes woudln’t have a problem coming to a winning squad that shares the ball.

If you think Philly isn’t headed in the right direction, I’m sorry.  Hope your vision clears up soon homie.

Talent wise. No doubt he is worth every penny of a 4 yr 100mil dollar deal. But in reality I would be very Cautious. If your not on the Court you can’t be Effective. Point blank period. I wouldn’t let him walk but at the same time i would be looking for a Deal similar to what Curry signed with GS b/c of his injury history.

He will already be 50% through that contract before Ben Simmons is eligible for his extension. Philly will have plenty of cap space during that time to justify the risk of signing Embiid. They’ve already exercised unprecedented patience with him too……

I’m just a huge believer in his talent. If the Sixers opt to not sign him I would bet my mortgage that another team would to that number

Am I the only one that finds it ironic that this whole 76ers rebuild was triggered by another unstoppable Center that was injury prone in Andrew Bynum. The difference between the two would be Embiid still has alot to prove at this point of his career and a great work ethic to try to remain healthy, while Bynum had already lost his mind after being in the bright lights of LA too long and his work ethic went to trash. I just find it funny that they currently have an injury prone dominant C (Embiid), a complete all around SF that struggles creating his own shot and knocking it down (Simmons), a good but not great PG (Fultz) and a decent hybrid forward (Saric) so far. The same pieces they had before they blew it up. Embiid/Bynum, Simmons/Igoudala, Fultz/Holiday, Saric/Young. Even with adding Redick they had Jodie Meeks who is comparable role wise.

Now obviously the current 76ers team has more potential its just wierd how it ended up that way.

In 3 years, Embiid has yet to eclipse 30 minutes in a single game!  A SINGLE GAME!  Let that marinate a minute.

He averaged 20 and 8, hit threes and made massive impacts to team numbers defensively… never playing 30 minutes in a game.  Let that marinate.

In no way they’re extending him before the season. You just can’t give a crippling contract to him if he can’t stay healthy and even next summer if he does stay healty I’d give him a the Kevin Love Minnesota three-year deal and bet that he’ll want to stay with the Simmons-Fultz core when the contract runs out.

I remember when people said Steph Curry couldnt stay healthy… just putting that out there.

Anyways, Embiid will and should get based off his potential. Im tired of hearing about hes played 31 games, Sixers need to get some production from him now hes not on a cheap contract.

Embidd is the gronk of the NBA the guys talent is amazing but he’s so injury prone. It sucks they can’t base a contract off incentives like the NFL. If gronk plays and produces he’s the hugest te but if he doesn’t he’s middle of pack. That being said it’s not the NFL so you have to pay him because someone else will. You also don’t want to low ball him and have him be insulted. He’s a fan fav on philly even if he doesn’t play so they have to max him.

Philly is in a weird predicament when it comes to their moves over the next few years. Let’s say they max Embiid. Simmons and Saric will need new contracts at the same time  and you have to assume both will be offered max deals by someone. Fultz is taking up 13 mil in cap space by then and needs a max the following year. Do they let Saric showcase his talent and then flip him for a couple picks? You can’t commit 100 million to 4 guys so one of them will have to go and Saric seems like the odd man out.

He’s more comparable to Greg Oden, Gronk has been hurt, he’s also actually played in a lot of games and a lot of meaningful games as well. He’s been a part of championships.

Embiid is super talented. He hasn’t played in a meaningful game or produced when it matters yet.

if they do it now i think he needs to take at least a little discount. it gives him security and the sixers save a little money for taking the risk. if not then let him hit the restricted market and try to get an offer done before he can sign a offer sheet somewhere with terms that can hurt the team, that is if you feel he is worth it after seeing him play more

The last thing philly wants is him to sign a max with a 4th year player option. Realistically he’s getting a max deal somewhere gotta pay the man.

He might be a generational talent. You have to take that risk. Max offer. You can’t do amazing things if you aren’t bold. No brainer.

Embiid biomechanically is flawed. Bigs have a hard enough time with lower body injuries but those traditional concerns are amplified by how awkward Embiid lands after a jump. This is on jumpshots, rebounds and any time he leaves the floor. This alone guarantees that he will never be able to play a full season and as he ages his ability will deteriorate due to this fact.

With that being said, I would offer an extension that includes an injury clause that would go into effect if he misses a certain amount of games. I really hope I’m wrong and you sixer fans are deep here but the truth hurts sometimes.

He is either pigeon toed or knock kneed. Either way he needs to stop attcking the rim off the dribble from the arc.. . Get in the post, mid post and work the baseline.

They should extend him for the max of course. A no brainer, since the downside is basically none, yes they have to pay him the money, but they can waive him from the salary cap since he is surely going to retire after a while if he cannot play.

Offer him a deal but make it incentive based as regards how many matches he plays each season. Also I think his people would encourage him to accept any sort of reasonable offer given his injury issues.

I would not go max but something very near it if he met game number criteria.
