I saw this article: Dwight Howard told Bright House Sports Network’s David Baumann that prior to the season, Howard indicated that he preferred the Magic would have hired Indiana Pacers associate head coach Brian Shaw or Golden State Warriors assistant coach Michael Malone to replace current Magic head coach Stan Van Gundy.

    Since been removed.

I know Mike Malone was in the running the be the head coach of the Warriors, but went with Marc Jackson instead and brought Malone in as the top assistant. I’m sure he would rather be a head coach.

So I ask, would it be valuable for the Warriors to be able to trade Mike Malone? I dont know what the Warriors would ask in return, but if say the Magic want him to be the next head coach, should the Warriors ask for some kind of compensation of assests  like draft picks or money in return.

    Thoughts?

Hmm, never heard of this before, but hey, if we could get a late first round pick out of this and a prospect I’m all for it.

Sounds like a good idea, I feel compensation should be involved when assistant coaches are still under contract with their current team but looking to take a head coaching gig.

I say a 2nd round pick seems fair for assistants switching and a 1st round pick for current head coaches under contract and switching teams

I would suspect if that were to happen then coaches’ salaries would have to be added to the salary cap and that might cause some problems…a union for coaches, more bargaining agreements, more lockouts..who knows? I think coaches should have the freedom to go wherever they’d like because it seems they can just as easily be fired by their team.

Lolz, no. Whats next trading waterboys? There would be too many egos. Also its redundant, if a team wants an assistant coach to be there head coach I’m sure he’d leave willingly.

I think it has already been done. SVG was traded by the heat to the magic against a 2nd round draft pick.

I have to check but I’m pretty sure.

the Heat allowed Van Gundy to coach the Magic in exchange for a second-round draft pick in 2007 and the right to swap first-round picks in 2008 or another 2008 second-round draft pick and cash.
