Though he was later known for babies and ridiculous weight gain, Shawn Kemp was right up there with Dr J as an all-time in game dunker. Set aside 10 minutes, because you are going to want to watch this three or four times. This ought to be cool even to the "new shcool" NBA fans.  He was a running and jumping poster machine.

I was 13 when the Cavs dealt Terrell Brandon and Tyrone Hill for a then-28-year-old Shawn Kemp. I was ecstatic. The Cavs got three solid years out of him and even snuck into the playoffs the first year they had him.

When I first watched Blake Griffin at Oklahoma, I thought, “This dude is Shawn Kemp, but with Karl Malone’s work ethic.”

Spawn Kemp (thank you Pete Vecsey) still make me laugh.

    No doubt an incredible talent.

dr. j was a great dunker anywhere, anytime. kemp was a great in game dunker. now we got both blake griffin and deandre jordan. i say tom chambers could even join the conversation there. but imo the best in game dunker of all time was dominique.

So crafty! Those dunks are not only "in your face" type, he also avoided the block by moving his body in the air. You don’t see that nowadays.

If you say he was "one of" (which I agree with), how does mentioning someone else mean you haven’t done your homework?

I loved Shawn Kemp. I sported his Reebok Kamikaze’s in 8th grade, lol. Really explosive, very good and underrated footwork around the hoop.

His weight gain was baffling, it’d be like if Blake Griffin gained 40 lbs of fat right before he turned 30.

Don’t forget this was the guy with Gary Peyton who led the Sonics to a 64 win season in 1995-96 Western Conference Title and took the MJ Bulls to 6 games in the NBA Finals. He was pretty damn durable during his peak years in 9 of his first 11 seasons he played at least 79 regular season games.

I like the story of him showing up at 315lbs for the shortened 1998-99 season but still averaged a career best 20,5ppg that season. If he could have stayed in shape he could have easily played another 5 years at least I reckon.

What do people think his HOF chances are, he’s been overlooked so far and with so many stars going to be eligible over the next 3 to 10 years, it might get harder. But as a 6 time All Star and 3 time 2nd All NBA Team he must deserve some consideration.

HOF?  Probably not happening.  All Timer on highlight videos, I think that is already proven.  Great Soncs memories.  As you mention, his tandem with Gary Payton was both tough and entertaining.

FWIW – Saw this guy play in the Indiana HS Final Four absolutely devastating.  All he did was dunk on everyone on the court, but nothing else was really necessary.

My memory of Kemp is/was a bit different. I remember my Celtic team coming off a year without Larry Bird and we had the 13th pick. Parish was getting Old and Boston didn’t have any good young Bigs. I was hoping for a good Big player. Boston ended up taking Michael Smith (BYU) because he was a 6’9 white boy shooter who Boston had hoped would be another Bird type player. Well he sucked and the rest is history. I’d imagine Bird throwing perfect alley oops passes to Kemp whose young legs could have added to what Boston really needed.

Funny thing though the Bulls had 3 first rd picks that year and could have had Shawn Kemp, Vlade Divac and BJ Armstrong. Damn.. imagine the Bulls/Jordan with Kemp and Divac???

At least my Celtics weren’t the only team to F*ck that draft up.
