Wow I dont know what to say about this. I can think of a few people just working for TNT that are more qualified and more knowledgable for a GM spot than Shaq. I love Shaq's personality on camera but this would be disastrous him running a franchise. Thoughts?
I just saw this too. I'm still letting it sink in.. I'm not sure how I feel about it. Like you said though, there are more qualified people for this. Shaq might be able to make Dwight stay though...
Hmm, well he has proven to be a buisness man, but I believe his personality is too flamboyant toe be an Exec, but who knows, maybe he has an eye for talent like Larry Legend.
But now this puts so much pressure on Dwight with one of the 5 greatest centers of all time basically calling you a &$#%#&@! in public and now having his job hinge on having you stay. But this would be very, very entertaining.
I think, if I were to hire an unproven GM, he would have to have some scouting experience. Also Shaq has an ego and I don't know how that fits with the position. The most successful GMs seem to stay behind the scenes. In regards to Howard, Shaq seems to show a little disdain for him, so I don't see Shaq being able to keep Howard in Orlando as someone above suggested.
I would assume Shaq doesn't get hired as GM, but I wouldn't bet against him taking a position within the (or another) organization.
When you say he has proven to be a business man what do you mean by that?
Shaq has a home in Orlando, he played for the Magic, this will be a very intriguing storyline to follow. I don't think it's too far-fetched to have Shaq be the GM of the Magic. He is very well-educated, having just received his doctorate and he's always been a "business" man. I do not think Shaq is too fond of Howard. Ever since Dwight had the whole Superman thing going on, Shaq didn't like that too much.
@Richie Rebel, Shaq is an entrepenuer, probably not a great one and he probably has tons of smart advisors, but I believe he invests money and is active money wise. I can't think of an example right now but I'm sure there are some, I actually think he'd make a decent GM as far as putting together a roster, but other than that I'm not sure, but I do like his comentary on TNT, although I may be the only one, lol
I wouldn't trust Shaq because of the team he drafted on all star weekend
Maybe he can fill the Orlando arena with Shaqtuses (Shaqtii?)
In all seriousness though...wow. I never thought of Shaq as someone with a good basketball mind. He was great player because he was an unstoppable physical force; nobody was big or strong enough to hope to slow him down. Honestly, it just reeks of desperation to me that they're even considering Shaq as a GM . Like SportNinja said, it's a good point that Shaq outwardly dislikes (at the least) Howard; Shaq would control Howard's basketball fate. Let that sink in. That just sounds like a PR disaster in the making. Call me a cynic, that's just how I see it.
I would move to Orlando and go to Magic games if Shaq were GM. But, only for these reasons:
1) The potential for "Shaq-Fu" giveaway night
2) Shaq bringing back Kazaam for the jumbotron, and making it rain candy in the arena, which is then eaten entirely by Daniel Orton and Shaq
You do know GM and the Marketing Director are 2 entirely seperate entities correct?
Yes, Shaq is going to make Dwight Howard not leave Orlando... -_-
That's like prostitute giving a seminar for women to keep their virginity.
Plus anyone who forces an arena of fans to watch Kazaam on the jumbotron deserves to be fired and stoned.
Yeah, I know there's a difference between the two. Just trying to imagine the self-promoting Shaq would do if he were in a position of power in Orlando, cause let's face it- he loves himself...a lot.
I actually wouldn't mind seeing this, if anything it'd give Dwight incentive to stay. Having Ewing and Shaq in the fold to mentor your star C? Can't really think of a better situation in terms of getting the most out of Dwight, but at the same time it has the potential to blow up in his face.
I think Shaq has a good eye for talent and understands the game very well, he's just more of a big picture kinda guy, which is what you want from a GM.
he has a pgd right he must be good :) hahaha kidding he may be a good gm but its to early to say
This is a terrible move for Shaq, but, whatever, this organization turns gold to crap more often than damn near any other. I'm all for it since it gets Shaq off my damn TV and, hopefully, Webber back on.
I would love to see it , but it wouldn't be smart for the magic
They should bring Shaq in to teach Dwight some post moves instead of run the team. But in all seriousness I don't think Shaq would be that bad in a front office possition. He may come off as slow and goofy, but keep in mind that he's an entertainer and probably does a lot of that to help promote himself and his brand.
Shaq has played under some of the best coaches of this decade (Doc Rivers, Phil Jackson, Stan Van Gundy, Pat Riley, D'Antoni), some of the best players (Kobe, Pierce, KG, Allen, LeBron, Nash, Penny, Wade, Allen, Rondo, Amare, Payton, and Malone), and has been on some of the best teams (Lakers, Celtics, Cavs, Magic). This guy has seen great basketball, and knows what it takes to be a great player, and how to win. There is no way someone could spend a lifetime around all those guys mentioned above and not know a thing or two about the game of basketball. I wouldn't give Shaq the keys to the city just yet, but I would be very interested to see what he could do in the front office
Yeah, Shaq has been around great basketball teams/minds/coaches/players. But so has Michael Jordan. Look how awesome of an exec/talent evaluator he's been.
Whatever gets him off Inside the NBA and gets Chris Webber back on
