I want to give a shout out to Shaka Smart for his great win against Carolina at home last night.  Being a VCU alum, I was hurt, as was everyone in Richmond when Shaka left Richmond for Austin.  I felt VCU was taylor made for Shaka and HAVOC and since VCU has no football team, he didn’t have to compete for respect like he will in Austin since Texas is an obvious football town, even with their struggles recently.  Shaka is a young guy with great energy, enthusiasm, and by all accounts a great guy.  The Erwin Center was rocking last night and it was a great atmosphere.  Texas isn’t great, but they are a good basketball with some players.  Javan Felix was unconscious from three and of course hit the game winner.  Camerona Ridley and Isaiah Taylor are good also.  Hurts as a Carolina fan to watch my Heels drop their second road game of the season in such heart-breaking fashion.  Texas got a great resume-building win.  I think Roy is like 1-6 versus Texas since coming to Carolina.  They just have his number and always play Carolina tough.  I’ll always be sour about Shaka leaving my Rams but Texas got a good coach and a great guy and I will always have mad respect for the guy.

After watching that game you can tell Texas is trending up.  Shaka looks so fun to play for. I hope he starts killing it in recruiting.

I think it’s only a matter of time before he starts landing big-time recruits from Texas and starts to get the program back to its elite status. In a similar fashion to how I believe Brad Stevens could own the Hoosier state if he was IU’s head coach, I think Smart could own Texas when it comes to college basketball.

Love Shaka. Think he’s doing a great job so far at Texas. I’m a St. John’s fan, alum and booster, and we are battling him for a very good JUCO player Bashir Ahmed. So while I have great respect for him as a coach, and wish him the best, I hope we can win that battle (we need it lol).

Anyway, I agree with the above poster about Shaka owning Texas in a few years, and what Stevens could have been. I would have loved to see Stevens stay in college. While he is doing a good job with the Celtics, I think he would have been better off staying in college where, in my opinion, the head coach is a lot more important than in the NBA. He single handedly elevated Butler from a Horizon Conference school into the Big East, which is no small feat. I really would love at some point if he could come back to college to coach a big time school like IU.

The best part about Shaka and Stevens though, is while they never had the most talented teams, their players always play hard for them, and they get the most out of all them. That’s a true pleasure to see in the college game nowadays.
