So, ever since I was an incoming freshman and watched my high school’s varsity get demolished by Kevin Garnett and Ronnie Fields I have been drawn to the scouting component of NBA and College Basketball.  I just CANNOT seem to project growth when watching 8th graders and Freshman in High School.  Tim Floyd (always a guy who draws my attention when he’s in the news based on his time with the Bulls) was infamous for signing a few 8th graders when he was at USC.  I could never figure out how he just KNEW these guys were going to be good enough to warrant one of his limited scholarships.  That being said…

I am just blown away by the film I watch of Seventh Woods.  He seems to be the first guy I can honestly project as a Top 5 pick in the NBA Draft and I have only seen film of him as a 13, 14, and 15 (?) year old.  Even if he doesn’t grow anymore, which is of course not likely, he’s already got the size, athleticism, and skills to play the NBA PG position.  Am I over evaluating this kid?  Barring a major injury, of course, he looks to me like a future HOFer.  Am I falling victim to the "mixtape hype" that sometimes is all too common for some of us on this site?  I don’t think that he is listed as the #1 prospect in his graduating class but I would commit a 1st Rounder to him TODAY if I was drafting in the late 1st Round in a stocked draft.  Even if it meant I wouldn’t even get him on the roster for 5 years.  Of course, I sometimes enjoy the NBA Draft more than the NBA season (especially this year, as I am a Bulls fan and I am actively cheering for them to LOSE as many games as possible).

Has anyone seen him in person?  Got any info that might make me lower my thoughts on this kid?

I wouldn’t ever project a 15 year old as a future hall of famer or anything like that but Seventh woods is starting to tap into his unreal potential. He is not shooting the ball a whole lot better. Has a game against stiff competition a couple weeks ago where he went for 42 and hit seven three pointers in one quarter. His jumper is really coming along as well as his left hand. I would say it is safe to say he will probably remain around a top 15 prospect for his class the remainder of his high school career if he keeps on the same track. He will probably be a one and done also but I still can’t say for sure. 2017 draft is a long way to go. His handle is getting tighter and lower to the ground and he is attacking the basket with more control. A real prospect to look out for is Dennis Smith Jr who is also an elite athlete in the 2016 class with more skill than seventh woods and more height and length. He can just flat out do it all and looks like he will be a top 10 player in the 2016 class. 2016 class is a loaded one.

because if I had to make a comparison for Woods, it would be Ronnie Fields, at this point in time.

Demitrius Walker was the next Lebron according to Sports Illustrated. Woods seems like a sure thing, but two months ago Wiggins also looked like the sure first #1 pick. Point being let’s not get ahead of ourselves. I really just hopes he keeps the right people around him.

Joshua Jackson will be standing the tallest in that 2016 class when it’s all said and done.

We all love basketball if we’re on here obviously, but can we PLEASE stop with the posts saying that kids that are freshman or sophomores in high school are future top 5 draft picks and ESPECIALLY calling them future hall of famers.  It is absurd and absolutely ridiculous to be saying that kind of stuff.  We are all enamored with Seventh Woods and his ridiculous athleticism including his mistape of his nasty dunk in transition.  There are so many things that can happen between now and when he goes to college.  The list of "shoulda," "woulda," "couldas," is too long to list.  Wasn’t Lenny Cooke supposed to be the next Jordan?  Some guy on here took it even further posting some crap about the top 5th graders in the country.  5TH GRADERS!!!!  It has really gotten out of hand here.

…I have always said the same stuff you are saying.  I used to think people were idiots.  Then, I started seeing this kid’s name pop up on BleacherReport’s NBA Draft notifications on my cell phone and I thought, "Looks like he’s playing against terrible competition".  Well, he was because they were friggin’ 8th graders.  Some of the video footage was from 8th and 9th grade, I think.  I was blown away.  But, I guess that is one of the only times I felt like I "saw it" with someone that young.  I always was blown away at major programs like USC getting commitments from 8th graders because I could never really determine growth from someone so young.  Speaking of Lenny Cooke, I was just reading an article about him that brought up that Joakim Noah was only 5’11” at 13.  How the Hell do you determine a 1 foot growth spurt?  You don’t.  That’s what I am trying to say.  This kid doesn’t really need to grow to be able to play his natural position.  The only other time I said this about a Sophomore in High School was Jabari, but that’s because I caught a couple of his games.  Plus, Rose was tearing it up at the time and he "didn’t start on varsity as a frosh but Jabari did" blah, blah, blah.

On a related note, I caught a video of him doing ball handling drills.  Do you think that these kids are doing too much to their knees and crap at too young of an age?  Bledsoe is having knee surgery now.  I think it’s a meniscus.  How many young guards are tearing their knees up while they are young?  I got one guy insisting it’s the lack of PED’s but I don’t think these guys are really using them (or were using them).  I think they are putting too much strain on their bodies at a VERY early age with AAU and crap.
