Two and a half years ago, I was watching college basketball on a Saturday evening in January.  Since I don’t have cable, my options were limited, so I was watching a solid Marquette team take on an ok Seton Hall team.  Since I usually root for the underdog when I have no other rooting interests in a game, I was rooting for the Pirates.  They were keeping it close, but, with 50 seconds left, they were down by 10 points.  But, thanks to one of the greatest clutch shooting performances I have ever seen by star guard Jeremy Hazell, the Pirates sent the game into overtime.  They ended up losing anyways, but I became a big-time Seton Hall fan that day.  Hazell, along with rebounding monster Herb Pope, had the Pirates on the bubble for the tournament in the closing weeks.  But that’s where the problems began…

First of all, the Pirates did not make the tournament, despite a great SOS.

Then, they went to NIT, where they lost in the first round after Pope punched an opponent on Texas A&M in the balls.

At the same time, player Robert Mitchell gets arrested after a robbery.

Then, coach Bobby Gonzalez is fired and proceeds to steal a man purse from a Ralph Lauren store in June

Then Pope has a major heart problem in the 2010 offseason, threatening his life and severely limiting him the following season.

Then, they take an inexplicable turn for the worst and begin the 2010-2011 season poorly.

Then Jeremy Hazell randomly gets shot in a botched robbery in December of his senior year.

Then two rotation players, Keon Lawrence and Jamel Jackson, get kicked off the team in February of 2011.

They end up having a losing record in the team’s last year with Hazell and Pope together.

Then they have a decent season last year and are a solid bubble team, but they are denied again.

Then they make a fairly early NIT exit.

And now, after the Hazell-Pope era is over, star recruit Aquille Carr, the only decent recruit in the 2012, 2013, or 2014 classes, is arrested.

All this occurred after I became a fan, and I feel I am responsible.  For this, I am sorry.

But I will continue to root for the Pirates nonetheless

Quite a poor turn of events, a shame really.. I always liked Hazell, he was such a shooter, isn’t afraid to shoot it from anywhere in the gym…
