Whatever happened to the former McDonald’s All-American Scotty Hopson being a one & done prospect? Scotty is a guy who was ranked 1st in his position & 7th overall on scout.com coming into college. For him to be highly touted as a top prospect he has fell of the radar in many eyes. Can anyone tell me where has his star quality potential gone. Does anyone think he will be a NBA prospect this year or, a player that was a former HS standout to tremendously fall off?

He has proven to be somewhat of a layup lines prospect to me. He is about 6’6, jumps pretty well, and moves pretty well. But he isn’t a huge factor in the games, and is capable of totally dissapearing. He still has alot of talent but as of last year, he couldn’t do much other than shoot 3’s or dunk. His effort level, ball handling, defense, and probably work ethic must improve for him to suceed in the NBA.

He has elite 2 guard measurables, so somebody will take a chance on him and its not like he has been bad. He is one of those guys with potential and that high ranking sticks with you, so nobody has forgotten about him. He just hasn’t put it all together yet. At worst, he has the goods to be a wing defender and spot up shooter journeyman type.

You know ..Its funny..That if the NBA Rule allowing high schoolers to go pro were still applied..
Hopson might’ve been a 1st round pick when he came out of high school.. based on the skills he displayed there..
If Felipe Lopez had came out after he finished high school..He might’ve been a top 3 pick..LMAO!!!

I dont think Hopson will get drafted..But NBA Personel will be quick to offer him a spot on their summer league team..His athleticism is off the charts..Plus he has great size…He just havent been able to put it all together at Tennessee…

Hopson has underachieved to me. He is a very nice athlete and a nice shooter, but he’s a poor ball-handler and defender. His IQ is low, but his handle severely limits what he can do offensively and it makes him prone to disappear from games. He will get drafted because he has instant offense upside, but I think he’s a 2012 prospect. He has a chance to be an All-SEC player next year, if not when he’s a Sr. I think his potential is a Von-Wafer type of instant offense guy.

Yes, those guys playing 30 minutes a game on Elite Eight teams are such underachievers.

he is my biggest rising sleeper of this year….I think he will be a lottery pick….he has the good pgs playing along side him still as well as Tobias Harris…..I think he can be a lottery pick….he played well at the end of last season once Tyler Smith bounced…..

So Scotty Hopson has lived up to his HS ranking? Maybe if you purely go by stats he’s done a very good job for Tennessee, but if you watch how he plays on a consistent basis then he’s underachieved.

I think how he’s played with an increased role is a complement to his development as a player…..he could have went to Rutgers and put up monster numbers….but he has waited his turn at UT and has made the most of it…..that team was sorry….then what was supposed to be their star player goes down, Hopson stepped UP, and they began to win…..plus he is putting up decent numbers…..plus he has the size and athleticism NBA scouts drool over….he is doing what most people say that raw, talented HS kids should do by staying in school extra years to develop like they need to and he is getting ripped for it…..I don’t really understand the hate (McDunkin can I get a gif???)

It is your fault for thinking that high school rating guarantees some sort of immediate domination in college. He went to a team with older players who were good, and he was still able to step in and contribute. Big time recruits go to Duke and sat on the bench last year and that wasn’t underachieving. Ed Davis not playing big minutes on the champ the year before did not mean he was underachieving. Situations matter.

Saying he can be productive at Rutgers isn’t saying much, except he can score on a team with little to no guys who have talent.

He has looked shaky. He average a bit more TO’s than assists, is a bad defender and ball-handler and has been less productive than he could be because he hasn’t improved in either area since he’s been at Tennessee. He’s a prospect because he has nice shooting skills and athleticism, but nothing else about him is good, especially since his athleticism is often null and void due to his bad handle. Nobody is hating on him, I actually like Hopson’s upside, but this is a critical year for him. If he doesn’t improve his handle and D, alot of questions need to be raised about his NBA potential. Nobody is hating on him, everything I’ve said about him is true.

He is contributing, but that doesn’t mean that he hasn’t underachieved. High school rankings have merit man, I don’t care what you say. There is a reason they are out there, and they 99.9% are used as a barometer for things such as this.

If a big-time recruit goes to Duke (or any school) and sits the bench, they have underachieved. All the guys you named in my thread about underachievers (Trevor Releford, John Riek etc etc) all sit the bench, and you named them as guys that have underachieved. So are you being hypocritical right now? I think so…

Ed Davis played behind IMO the best college basketball player in the history of college basketball. Hopson started as a Fr., and last year as a Soph. So what that example makes no sense. Hopson has underachived because he hasn’t played up to his HS rankings and hype, Davis just got limited PT because he was behind a guy who earned his stripes and then some

I always thought his talent is a bit overrated, and that his upside is not as high as everyone thinks it is. Iman Shumpert, Elliot Williams, Malcolm Lee, William Buford are all more talented than Scotty Hopson, yet those guys were ranked behind him in his High School class. I would take all those guys that I mentioned ahead of Hopson back in 2008 and right now.
