BallinAIstyleParticipantJust out of curiousity why is the general consenus that Sam Hinkie and the Sixers are going to build mainly through the draft? I suppose the two picks last year and two in the top 10 potentially this year naturally will force that perception. And for the record I am a fan of the team and also believe best guess is that building through the draft is our plan
But I got to thinking last night while watching the Rockets/Trailblazers game and noticed in reality much of Houston’s roster that Hinkie assisted in assembling was not via the draft. James Harden, J. Lin, Dwight Howard, O. Asik, F. Garcia, even Beverely was aquired from LAL after draft… The only players that were drafted and still play meaningful minutes for Houston is Parsons and Jones
My question is any chance you think Hinkie believes he can build a winner sooner than later via trades and FA? Look at what the Celtics did for example.. Just a thought with all of our picks and the amount of MONEY we have… Why can’t a great sports town like Philly make it happen sooner than later? Wouldn’t adding vetern players to MCW and Nerlens possibly speed up the learning curve? Look at how much Rondo gained from playing with Allen, Pierce and KG..no way you can tell me you thought he would be that good that fast

Lotto StudParticipantThis year’s class became a huge fog cloud. Any other year it would be a different saga to build with vets.

KHAM83ParticipantI think if the right vet comes along theyll pursue him, but they’re definitely not going to sign vets just because they have cap room. I too think that if they add two more rookies in the lottery, the best learning for them will be playing alongside some vets. Shouldn’t look forward to adding another lottery pick. Imo, which ever rookie that isn’t nba ready, pursue a vet at his position that man the minutes until said rookie is ready to play meaningful minutes.

HitsterParticipantPhilly have not signed a top level FA for several years and once the Bynum/D12/Iggy trade had blown up for them they went into rebuild. By trading Jrue Holliday for draft picks and not looking to retain Evan Turner or Spencer Hawes who they both traded showed that Hinkie was gutting the roster and starting with a clean slate.
Top established FA’s like to have proven players alongside them, Philly have cap space and can put in offers for players this summer but I don’t think Hinkie would put in stupid offers to get a "name" in. If Philly retain a top 3 draft pick after the lottery get a top prospect in, get Noel playing next season, MCW improves again in year 2, come summer 2015 they are a much more attractive option to major FA’s.

BallinAIstyleParticipantDo you think our 10th pick and maybe two early second rounders gets Klove? Sign Stephenson..still draft Parker or Wiggins…were then looking at MCW, Lance Stephenson, Parker/Wiggins, Klove, and Nerlens..we have money and picks to do it and max out Klove and give stephenson more than other teams…your telling me that team..which is young..doesnt become top 4 team in east? why wouldnt we

Magic JordanParticipantNot even close man. But your potential 2nd pick, 10th pick, Thad Young contract is probably a starting point.
Let’s be real though K Love will leave Philly the first chance he gets (next off season). I’m not trying to be a dick or anything but I don’t imagine any top 10 or top 20 for that matter level free agent voluntarily going to Philly.
Your best bet is to be patient and build through the draft where you can lock players up for at least 4 years and hopefully build a culture which they enjoy playing together. Like OKC.

ibe12ParticipantI think it all depends on the veteran. I don’t see Himkie bringing in vets that are past their prime like Billy King use to do for the Sixers. I think the Brand, Webber, Glenn Robinson days are over. The owner isn’t putting any pressure on Hinkie to win now and I think Hinkie will continue to stay the course until the right middle aged veterans who can actually still play become available.

burgessfourParticipantThey are accumulating “assets” through the draft. When Hinkie took over he said it was going to be a long process and they were building the team “to last”. Based on that I think the assumption was they were building through the draft, though I don’t think he ever came out and said as much. Lately they’ve talked about accumulating “assets” (I hate when
management calls employees assets). No doubt they will add some vets this summer, they’ll need to do so just to get to the salary cap floor. They’ll probably all be on 1 year/short deals. They won’t get any big fish because even if they “hit” with both picks this year they’re not going to be good in 2015. No one will come here unless the Sixers gave them far & away the best offer. Hinkie won’t overpay this summer, but maybe next summer he won’t have to, things could be looking up by then.Next year this time they COULD have a core of MCW, Noel, Wiggins, Hood, Thad, Wroten………maybe they get lucky with a second round pick this year…….plus next year’s pick which almost is a lock to be a lottery pick. That could be a much more attractive roster to a really good FA.

Ebown5ParticipantNo signs point to Monroe. He would be a good signing if we were two more years into the rebuild, but he is up for big bucks this summer and he isn’t a star. We can’t sign any expensive players until we get a star player.
Until we draft or trade for a star player there is no reason to give up our flexibility and take a shortcut to mediocrity. I like Monroe as a player and think that he would be a good compliment to Noel, but we aren’t ready yet.

HitsterParticipantGreg Monroe for the right price would be a nice fit but it all depends on what Detroit decide to do with him as he is an RFA and they habve to sort out the PF position between him and Josh Smith. If we consider that Derrick Favours in the same draft as Monroe got $49 million over 4 years, I’d say that is a starting point for Monroe’s services.
Personally I’d see Monroe perhaps going to a more established team if he does move on and Detroit choose not to match. Hinkie could put an offer to him but I doubt he’d make a huge offer to get Monroe to sign an offer sheet. Philly can easily add a solid NBA players for around MLE type money on one or two year deals to get up to cap floor level and these players can fill the void and play around the youngsters as thy develop. With solid role players on short deals they will clear off the cap in due course or be useful trade assets as expiring deals or to fill out contending rosters near play off time so Hinkie would be able to move them on once the younger guys start to come through.
