Ok I am assuming the Ny Knicks are maxed out with salaries with their stars. Let’s just say Jeremy Lin keeps play well. How would they be able to resign him. I am also assuming right now he on some type of minumum contract

Because Lin was claimed off waivers, the Knicks still own his Bird rights & he’ll be a restricted FA this offseason meaning they can match any offer he gets. I also read that because he’s on a min contract the maximum amount he can earn next season is $5 mil so they can sign him right into the mid-level exception. Their problem is gonna be the SG position and re-signing JR Smith and/or Landry Fields.

Wouldn’t the Knicks be able to sign Landry as well if they match a contract because he’s a RFA?

When you resign a player, you can go over the cap.

Knicks have the full MLE but 3 key guys to re-sign(they cant go over the cap to sign Landry and Lin because they only have 2 years of experience, whereas they need 3, JR has a player option)

    they have 3 options

    Option 1

    Lin MLE

    JR picks up option

Landry takes Qualifying Offer and signs long term next year

    Option 2

    Landry MLE

    JR picks up option

Lin takes Qualifying Offer and signs long term next year

    Option 3

    JR opts out signs MLE

Lin and Landry take Qualifying Offer and get long term deals next year

But wait, I believe they can sign JR to the MLE, and then use the Gilbert Arenas rule to sign Jeremy Lin, and Landry Fields would have his early bird rights.

They dont have full bird rights they just have the right to match meaning a team can only offer as much as the Knicks can afford(5mil MLE) because they only have 2 years not 3
